I thought I'd do the honors this time and be the curious one. I'm lovin' the reviews(especially the setlists) on the shows each day so please keep them coming..

Dave lovering is super fucking awesome guy!
I met him outside the big easy in spokane! I talked to him for a bit.
He asked my name and he introuced himself and shook my hand and said nice to meet u.. he seemed soooo genuinely nice. I saw him inside during the warmup and he said hi again. he seemed very happy..
That was sooo cool. I am honored. Im glad you got to meet him too.
I heard about other shows that people met him and had the same response!

Marbleslinger- you are welcome.

Wolfbaby- I was at the sidebar w/Lovering. I did not see him do a card trick, but he did leave a couple minutes after I left him, so it could have been me you saw. He was great and really open to talking with me and others.

Highlights he told me: (1) he was having a lot of fun on the tour and was relaxed and feeling good; (2) he never gets nervous anymore except before the Mpls. show; (3) they have no plans to record/play any new material. After I told him how much I appreciated them deciding to tour, he thanked me for chatting and asked my name (seemingly genuine but who knows). It was a lively little chat.

That's the scoop. I did not get a chance to talk with Santiago at all. He was in a rush out both nights. May sound weird, but as a massive fan it's just cool to make eye contact with them up close. It was like my own little Behind The Music at The Commodore experience.

And btw, I love the recordings of both night's shows at this venue. They are so worth it.

This show sounds really good on the Disclive, especially like the bantering, they really need to do this more!!

Hey Kottke I think I saw you talking to Dave. Were you at the sidebar and did he do a card trick just before he left? I was standing right there waiting to talk to him but he took off.

What did he say about new material? Enquiring minds want to know

BTW, sorry to hear about the 4/23 DiscLive -- I was really looking forward to it. Of course I'm still downloading it anyway...

Awright, I'm stuck at the airport in Denver so I'll throw in my take. Best show of the tour!! (for me, anyway). Seriously, this came so close to the experience of 1992 at the Col Ballroom in Davenport, Iowa. Great setlist -- can't ask for much more than a combined 5 Bossanova/Trompe songs on this tour -- and the band really seems like they've reached the point where they no longer have to worry about playing the songs right and they just let it out (the Spokane show last night kind of contradicted that, but in Vancouver that was what it felt like). I was way up front in the middle of the mess -- and the crowd was REALLY into it, another thing which took me back to my 1992 experience -- I was getting tossed around and crushed against bodies and loved every minute of it.

Highlights: The Joey "no hands" guitar solo during Vamos mentioned above. Specifically where he put his fist up to his eye to accentuate the "sobbing guitar" effect. And his playing the Jeopardy theme on his guitar while Frank was changing guitars. Incidentally, the following night in Spokane he did the Jeopardy theme in lieu of the "Where Is My Mind" guitar licks toward the end of the "Vamos" guitar solo. Cool to see two different shows and having them reference one another.

And of course the high fives -- loved that too.

Spokane was a letdown after this, but just about anything would have been and I was pretty worn out by then.

really kromkamp you thought victoria was *blistering* and winnipeg was the worst of the shows you saw?!

Victoria was hands down my least favorite show of the canadian leg, venue sucked by turning on the lights and such, felt like a short show, something about the whole vibe didnt do it for me....

the first three shows i went to(winnipeg, regina, saskatoon) were awesome cuz i knew less of what to expect all around, by the time they got to alberta i knew the rotation well, and the shows were fun but lacked the same innocent excitement as the first few, i felt like the commodore shows were fat because Vancouver is just an awesome city and the Commodore a sweet venue, to me the two nights at the Commodore felt more like real shows as opposed to "warm up" shows, though they did abort "la la love you" the first night, and that was kinda warm up style lol....

ill have to listen more to those vancouver shows and see what i think of the recordings, the energy in the club that nite was very powerful, def hard to capture on disc,

see ya in tha fall!!!

I saw both nights in Van. Both excellent. I met Joey after Thursday's show (he signed my CD) then I chatted with David before Friday's show at the bar for about 5 minutes. I asked him if they had plans to record any new material, how he felt about the shows so far, etc. It was a good talk and he was very gracious with his time. (It was probably only about 20 minutes before they went on.) Then I saw him after the show and he signed my CD, which was nice.

Music was great. They were funny and sonically tight. Frank and Kim went straight to the alley exit after both shows, not into the main ballroom like Joey and David, so I missed both of them. I regret not stalking the alley exit so I could complete my to-be-framed CD's with their autographs. And just to meet the songwriters, you know? Anyway, next time I'm smarter. Great, great concerts.

This probably belongs in another topic but since you mention it.

I agree about the CD sounding a bit lifeless vs. the actual show. I was talking to the guy from Disclive and he was telling me they only take a two line feed from the board which doesn't give a whole lot of flexibility for mixing, panning and EQ. Still it beats the hell of those bootlegs where someone had a handheld cassette recorder or something.
kromkamp Posted - 04/25/2004 : 09:23:11
Great setlist and an awesome show, but when i listen to the disclive it sounds a little lifeless. I dont know if its the mixing or the speed of the songs (Planet of Sound was played really slow and i think it set the tempo for the rest of the show).

In contrast, Victoria was just *blistering*, but the setlist wasnt as good.

My 4 Pixie show experience is now over. Id say Winnepeg was the worst of the 4, but theres no way to rank the other three (including Minneapolis ), they were all amazing in different ways.
proctor Posted - 04/25/2004 : 07:45:11
Yeah, they rocked hard! Both nights here were incredible. I'll give a slight edge to the Friday show, their onstage antics were priceless. They really are having fun together.
wolfbaby Posted - 04/25/2004 : 05:12:22
OK let me set the record straight.

I have never seen the Pixies live yet I have been a fan of theirs for 14 years. I saw them live on Friday and it was undoubtedly The Best Concert I Eave Ever Seen (and I have seen some good ones including Pearl Jam, RHCP, Radiohead at their prime, etc). It was a total high energy set and you could tell they were giving it their all. I bought the Disclive and it's OK but you can't tell that the audience was singing along to every word.

Now let me say this: think about it...they played their last gig here 12 years ago almost to the day. See? They're starting from where they left off. Every gig from here on in is new. God love 'em I wish them well,

Awesome show and I think they felt it tonight from the fans. Really glad to see the band so happy and playful on stage.

By any chance are you Puck from the subbacultcha mailing list from years ago?

What a great show! I've been waiting to see the Pixies live for about 10 years and they finally did this tour. I didn't want the discllive cd at the beginning of the show but it sounded so great I decided to get it. I'm glad I did, I don't usually like live versions but this one is fantastic. I think it takes great talent to play this great at a live show. I got disclive copy 29 of 1000 :-)
In case the band reads this thread, THANKS FOR THE GREAT SHOW!!!
shineoftheever Posted - 04/24/2004 : 14:15:15
Shit, I was considering going down just to see if I could pick up a copy of the DiscLive. I wish I had.

did they really do "In Heaven" -> "Wave of Mutilation" (regular version)? They've only been going into the UK Surf version from that one so far this tour.. With the regular version being stand-alone.

Tonights show was soooo cool.I met David, Frank, and Kim!How cool is that.! I also got Kim's pick.Cool huh!I was glad to see that the setlist had changed from last night. That was cool.It was also cool 'cause they talked alot more tonight.I was standing right in front of Kim tonight.( last night I stood right by Joey). It was so easy to get up close. They crowd was pretty cool too. They weren't getting all out of control. Is that a good thing or a bad thing.Ummm....yeah.I'm sad I won't be able to see their next show.

Back in Seattle. Oh man, y'all... this show was by far the best one for me so far. They seriously brought the rock. Frank was screaming it out like a madman, but also interacting with the crowd and the bandmates. I loved the whole "we should move around more and stuff" thing. It was pretty funny.

Did you guys catch when Kim goes "How many of you were here last night?" and then David asked "What about 12 years ago?" Heh.

I had a super primo spot tonight. The last two nights I'd been right up front, and the sound up there isn't good. Tonight, I grabbed the table right in front of the light guy. During the Pixies' set, we stood up on our little bench and could see over everyone from about 20 feet away from the stage. Every time someone in front of us would stand on a chair, security would make them get down, but for some odd reason, we were allowed to stay up on our bench. I had this perfect unobstructed view the whole time, with great sound. Awesome.

At the end, I asked the light guy for his set list, and he gave me LAST NIGHT'S. Weird, but cool.

yeah, and frank ended the show with: "We'll try not to wait so long next time," referring to the almost-12-years-to-the-day since they were here last.

how cool is that?
proctor Posted - 04/24/2004 : 02:08:28
Correction to the setlist. It was Holiday Song not Nimrod's Son.

FB: "You know I was talking to a fan... In the alley the other day. They were saying we should like move around more or something and talk and stuff."

I'm now officially having major regret I didn't stay in Vancouver for this show. WHAT WAS I THINKING?!
fletch Posted - 04/24/2004 : 01:33:41
Nice. I just updated my setlist grid thing: http://flet.ch/pixies/.

Looks like the only songs that have been played on the tour, but not in Vancouver, are Head On and The Holiday Song.
banonna Posted - 04/24/2004 : 01:24:28
The high-5ing and thumbs-upping KILLED me! That and watching Frank "sing along" with Joey's guitar:

"MMMMWOWWWWWWWWWWW-MMMMMWOWWWWW-MMMWOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW..."

... as though nobody could see him... so NEAT, right?

This was my first Pixies show; I'm wondering, is that "Look Ma, no hands!" guitar solo in Vamos typical schtick for Joey? I thought THAT was pretty wonderful...

Also, who were the guys with the video cameras? Will the tapes be available at all? They sure did get in the way at times - I actually watched a bit of the show through one of the cameras!
