Yes.. haha. Poor me. I said I hated waiting after the opening acts, and then you turned around and flipped (ish). My hair isn't braided, its really straight with bangs. I'm fifteen... but you'd think I was like 12 if you remembered me at all. I wore the sweetest shirt - Jesus is my Homeboy!

I didn't think he looked uncomfortable at all in Calgary; if he did it certainly wasn't reflected in how he played. I haven't heard the recording yet, but I thought he sounded fantastic, and from where I stood the man appeared to have an ear-to-ear grin for much of the night.

Even if he was uncomfortable, I can understand that completely. Maybe he never has been and never will be at ease in front of a crowd. Even if he is, think about how many shows he's played since the Pixies' first run. To go from whatever that may have been (probably the odd show where people would go, "Oh yeah, the Pixies? You're THAT guy? When are you getting back together?") to having 1000 people a night screaming what a god you are would probably be unnerving for most humans.

Nothing is ever something.

anyone else notice how absilutely whacko/paranoid mr.Santiago looked?

My god. He seemed as if there were someone in the crowd with a gun on him,..the most uncomfortable person I've EVER seen!

that was the lamest beer gardens I have ever Seen. I was the first one in there. I asked them what the hell is going on here it used to be indside the hall.
they said The Liqour board complained. You could not see the stage @ all from in there. it was a fucking joke. That brought my anger towards the poor little children attending the show.
Anyone that was watching the hockey game while the pixies were on stage should have been kicked out!!!

Here's another person who was in the big warehouse at U of C last night. I arrived without a ticket, and managed to get one for only $50! I just stood near the south door quietly with a sign saying "Need 1 Ticket!" and not 5 minutes later I was set up. Mega karma for that young woman, wherever she is. I actually didn't enjoy much of the show, until near the end when the music won me over. Their performance seemed perfunctory, they just stood in place, playing the songs exactly as they sound on the records. That, and the lack of interaction with the crowd made it seem like I was listening to the music on a CD player set to random. By the end I just accepted it though and started to enjoy it more. More songs from Bossanova would have been nice though. I was aching to hear Alison, that would have blown the roof off the place. That was the song that turned me on to the Pixies in 1990. That and Dig for Fire. I've got tickets for Toronto too, so I guess I'll be seeing them again. I know what to expect now at least.

Haha, hey, flap and I were right behind you! Me and the short girl were trying to convince you to let us go ahead of you, to no avail :( Just kidding. You must remember me, you told me off because you had been waiting for 12 years for the reunion!!

Cool to have met someone off the forums. Not that I realised it, or that I really met you but whatever.

I think 500. They make Dog in the Sand easy but then you have to really work for Teenager of the Year. Lord knows I did.

That's my first double-post of the day. An accident. How many posts do I need to get to the next level, anyway?

Passion,

Are all these double-posts your attempt at reaching Teenager of the Year?

The opener was Chad Van Gaalen - he played some shows at a store here in Edmonton in recent weeks and now everyone seems to be buying his disc. Good job last night.

I didn't have nearly as much energy as I did in Edmonton, but I think the band played much better. It was great to stand there and just watch them, trying to predict how their faces would twist with each oncoming bang or hiss. Frank and Joey in particular seemed to be absolutely on fire to my ears. I Bleed was again a personal highlight, and I was thrilled to hear No. 13 Baby, which was also very well done. I've never been the world's biggest Velouria fan, but last night I started crying during the first verse as it dawned on me what a great song it really is - not sobbing or anything, but it was weird - a few tin teardrops just managed to worm their way out of the corners of my eyes. I was a bit surprised to hear Ed Is Dead, in a good way.

Also, the best laugh of the show was during La La Love You, when Joey walked up to contribute a shrill, bizarre "I love you" to the chorus. I didn't see any other comments about it, but that was a real chuckle for me.

Big thanks to the Pixies for the Alberta shows.

Nothing is ever something.

Hola.

Umm, it was a great show. Some terrible layout though with the "beer garden" being a roped off chunk of cement with a TV on one of those stands they had in elementary school.

Other than that -- no banter. They didn't chatter with the crowd at all. You can see the setlist above so I won't bore you with that. Gigantic was the first song of the first encore and I almost missed that due to alcoholism and that would have been a real tragedy.

That Frank guy can really belt it out and the feller with the guitar is a hell of a music making person. I wanted the gal to sing more since I'm a big fan of hers but she didn't chime in too much.

Don't know if this is a pattern or not but FB strutted out by himself and then the other three followed after a pause. Seemed kind of odd but maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe they were in the bathroom or something?

The Flames game was on in the "beer garden" and there was only a sorry few watching that whilst music played (I think, cuz I wasn't one of them).

All in all it was one hell of a concert. I've never seen them before but holy smokes the time flies when you are having fun. I'm not a concert reviewer and I wish I could elaborate but I can't. It was just good. No distractions, no fancy clothes, they just played all those awesome songs. I had a goofy smile on my face the whole time. Never had that before at a concert. I couldn't believe it.

And then, quite a while after the show was over, the Flames won. I almost got run over on 4th Street in front of Original Joe's trying to see the OT replay in the window. If that was you in the white car, slow down you jackass, you almost kilt me on literally one of my best nights yet.

To be honest, I think the Edmonton show has a better sound quality for the recording. I think there might have been issues with DiscLive in Calgary. If no one else does, I'll post the setlist later today

Vidman Posted - 04/20/2004 : 07:49:36
The opener's name is Chad Vangaalen (not exactly shure of the spelling of the last name) He was pretty talented...

So the Pixies skipped 'Where is my mind?" Pretty disappointed that I missed that one. That was the first Pixies song I ever heard... And NOT when I watched Fight Club!! Although that was a fantastic scene- made that movie for me!

Pretty sweet show. The band sure sounded great- like they never missed a day.

After hearing so much good about the disclive cd's I have to say I am a bit disappointed in the sound quality. Not bad, just not as good as I was expecting.

i can't think of the opener's full name off-hand, his first name is chad.
although i wasn't really into what he was doing, i appreciate his efforts for being a one-man band opening for the greatest band of all time!
i'm from calgary and i've heard this guys stuff before, and it's really good. i'm always interested in new bands, but tonight radiohead could have opened and i still would have been anxious for the pixies. let's go easy on the opening bands! their jobs in these couple of weeks are really bittersweet.

heh, let me guess, during Vamos?

he did the exact same thing in Winnipeg and Minneapolis, except only just the drumstick in Mpls, but used the bottle in Winnipeg.

the show was amazingly great...loved gigantic in the encore. Just wondering if anyone remebers the name of the warm up one man band, heh, ethan mc something i believe...he was pretty talented, very coordinated with the drum pedals and guitar as well as he was pretty stoked to get to see the pixies for free. Just wanted to know his naem id like to hear more from him.

the show was amazing! la la love you was a little messed up, but everyone was laughing, so it was great!
a great set, although still nothing new from bossanova or trompe, i wanted to hear allison so bad...
david lovering saying 'go flames go' before la la love you was a great moment.
joey broke a guitar string during the first song, bone machine. switched guitars half way thru.
what a great crowd! Thanks a lot. Everyone sang along to every song and seemed very appreciative.

There was no Weird At My School. Having been at both Alberta shows, I think the Calgary one was better. The band seemed more intense with the bigger audience. La La Love You was totally messed up, but they were laughing while playing it which was cool. Joey was awesome, just tearing up the solos. He got stuck with the wrong guitar during Nimrod's Son but still managed to pull it off. The DiscLive CD though doesn't sound as good as the Edmonton show did (only listened to it once through so far). But still an amazing show. Between the two Alberta shows, I heard all the songs I wanted to hear except for Levitate Me, but there's always next tour....right?

WHOOOOT
Well I heard Tickets were going for $500 or more @ the door.
Very mixed crowd. Kick ass night I enjoyed last night more but it was still phenomanal. And the flames won too! The band seems to be enjoying playing more and more. The crowd seemed more intense @ reds.
The beer gardens was basicaly outside of the hall what a bunch of shit! We didnt have any jackass on stage either so we got the 2 encores. My voice is toast I can barely speak. Well thanks to my sponser VISA my pixies experiences wouldnt be possible!
not as much singalong either alot of pukey little kids and fight club fans. I was skeptical @ first till this guy said oh ya I heard that song on fight club. or the 15 year old kids that didnt know any words. anyways thats it from me. time to work on some flames tickets
WHOOOOOOT GO FLAMES GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
