Posted - 04/23/2004 : 17:28:20 Sadly I agree, Red's is a stinker of a venue. But there sadly is no 1000-2000 type venue in Edmonton for small gigs. Places like New City and the newly renovated Rev (now the Starlite Room) are still too small. Until anything better comes up I guess we have to keep relying on Red's. |

Posted - 04/22/2004 : 11:29:14 Ok,
The Edmonton show was brilliant! Three things,
1. This band 'the pixies' has a singer that looks just like Frank Black (songs aren't as good though) 2. Red's is a festering shithole with bad sound, and a seemingly endless supply of assholes coming to each and every show. We must boycott Red's, I have had to go see Frank and the Pixies there, I can't say how much this room dampens every show. Everyone I talked to had to qualify the pixies excitement with 'too bad it's at Reds'. Frank, or friends of Frank, DON'T FUCKING PLAY AT RED'S ANYMORE!!!!!! This leads me to my third point. 3. If anyone can identify the jerkoff fratboy who jumped on stage, post his name here and I will have him assaulted on behalf of everyone at the Edmonton show.
Thanks God for Frank! The pixies are having fun, life is good!

Posted - 04/20/2004 : 21:48:07 hey all, I wished that you would've taken a peek at the 'Edmonton-Gigantic' thread because in it I mentioned the cheap beer loop hole at reds. You can go to the bar across the arcade (still in Reds) and purchase beer for $3.50 and take it back to the concert area. I did it for the Hot Water Music show and I did it for the Pixies as well....oh well, you all will know for next time.... |

Gotta love the opportunistic spirit but one does have to wonder at the addition of the $0.25 to the already exorbitant $5. Maybe it assisted the accumulation of tips from what would have been the typical $0.75 change-back. |

Posted - 04/20/2004 : 08:42:59 You know the more I think about it, I'm more choked at security than anything. There will always be the dolt that jumps on stage but this is probably the only one who got to sit there for half a minute before the lame-ass security even realized that he was there. I bet he was even surprised.
Either way though, it was amazing. |

Ok well yes Red's was charging much to much for a bottle of beer, but "the few good shows they'll ever get" comment is kind of going to far...
Edmonton is lacking a good venue for a show between 500 and 1000 people. That way Red's ends up getting some pretty good shows (Considering the bands that come this far north). Frank Black came last year to Red's and I've seen a ton of other shows there over the years.
What you really need to understand is they have a very captive audience at Red's last night. A whole lot of 30 year olds swimming in money, and wanting to re-live their college years is a good way to make money. And still there were a ton of drunk fools there.
Red's charges $5.25 a beer for 2 reasons: 1. They can get away with it 2. It limits excessive drunkeness
Although I admit number 2 wasn't followed last night. |

Posted - 04/19/2004 : 16:21:09 Further to the prior comments re Edmonton show...
Just bloody brilliant. After two shows in two days, we are a bit numb, really. Wife and I are glad to be off of work today. I expect the fact that they are our favouritest rock-and-roll heroes and there was high anticipation had a part to play in it, too. Today is like the falling action after the double climax to the story. I haven't the energy to do it again tonight, how sad is that?
While the shows were exhausting to attend, I can't imagine what it is like for them to play it. Joey and Frank were mopping their domes furiously by the end of it all. These guys bring their lunch buckets (and sometimes flannel shirts) and go to work. One woman I spoke to said something about how nice it was to go to a show where you know and love every tune...that was part of the fatigue induction, just being bombarded with one haymaker after another. I can't decide what I like better, the butt-shaking surfer twang sound or the motor-running shake-your-head-rhythmically sound. Whatever, it takes it out of you when it is the full frontal guitar attack is that relentless. The trippy solo in Vamos and the mantric repetitive end of Into the White were great places to get lost in.
While smaller than Saskatoon, the crowd was indeed into the show, evidenced by the fact that lots of people knew the words...I love the haunting sound of an entire hall singing oooooooooo over and over at the beginning of Where is my Mind. Now that'll raise the hair on the back of yer neck.
Kim's singing is as good as it ever was - just the right amount of sweetness without being cloying. Henceforth, no one dare speak negatively about her.
I heard that unlike the Sask show (where the surfers came out in the moat in front of the stage, then went around back and surfed to the front again), that Red's was just booting them out entirely.
We bought the disclive CD, and would recommend it. The sound quality is very good. I have magneplanar speakers which are pretty unforgiving for bad recordings, but all seems well. It must be recorded straight off the sound board...and what a massive sound board it was for such a small venue. I have seen FB&C on consecutive nights, too, but the sound was a tad shrill and my ears rang for a couple of days afterwards. Not so this tour...those Marshall amps are nice and warm sounding, especially paired with that Les Paul of Joey's.
Also with regards to the disclive thing - what a great service. This is one very cool way to make money in music in the 21st century so take notes, Lars Ulrich & co...innovate, don't litigate.
My one and only regret - they didn't play Planet of Sound, probably my fave. Should have been in Regina, I guess.
If you can't get tickets before the show in your town, do go to the venue regardless. We ourselves had bailers and thus one extra ticket before each show we attended...we had no problem selling them, and we did so at face value. You could get lucky and meet someone with some scruples who had planned co-attendees bail on them, too. You find out who the REAL Pixies fans are.
There was schwag for sale, and they don't hose you too badly on the prices. The packet of 2 stickers and 2 little buttons for C$5 was a nice deal in particular.
Red's hosed everyone brutally on the price of alcohol, though. $5.25 for a bottle of beer? Flaming bags of poo to them for gouging us on one of the few good shows they'll ever get.
It is a shame about the presence of the little poseur douchebags at the show, but what can you do? They're everywhere you go. As for that goofus who blew the second encore - truly not too swift, dude. |

Posted - 04/19/2004 : 12:11:32 I was there, I had a blast. This girl I know called last week to say she had a ticket. Highlights for me were I Bleed, Into the White, Something Against You, and Debaser - those ones all sounded incredible. I've gotta get dressed and down to the Greyhound station so I can go see them again tonight.
I can't speak for the other shows, but I know last night the way Kim screwed up Gigantic was by forgetting the words at the beginning, I think she even said that. She also seemed pretty out of it during Into the White, forgetting where she was all the time and stuff. I don't care though, it was great fun.
I'm going down to Cowtown...

I can't agree enough with Logan. If you have a chance to see more shows then do it!! I saw Winnipeg and Minneapolis only as well and every night after 8:00 a night long depression sets in with me and my girlfriend because we can't see the other shows. I am serioulsy thinking about buying tickets off scalpers for the Vancouver/victoria shows and flying in. Don't even think about not going if you have the opportunity!

Posted - 04/19/2004 : 10:45:15 Man until the dillhole jumped on stage we were definitely getting a second encore. I know this because in the DiscLive line, the guy infront of me got the setlist and there was a question mark after the first encore. All of the Pixies definitely were having a good time, lots of laughs and smiles. It looked like Frank asked Kim to sing Gouge Away again, which would have been pretty cool. And for your enjoyment, here is a little of the stage banter.
Kim: You ever been to Edmonton Joe? Frank: I'm blocking your way I know. Kim: Huh? Frank: Am I blocking your way? Am I breaking down the communication between you and Joe? Kim: (laughs) Frank: Why is my microphone pushed forward more than yours? Kim: Cause I keep moving back. Frank: Did you move back? Kim: (laughing) Yeah. Frank: I'm not trying to push forward here. Kim: I'm here in the spread. Frank: Do I look even Joe? Kim: (still laughing) Frank: (laughing - to Joe) No they want you to go as far forward as you possibly can I believe Joe. (chuckles) Don't be shy, Joe. Kim: (laughs) Frank: (counts in Here Comes Your Man)
They are definitely having a good time up there. And if anyone on here knows who jumped on stage, give them a kick in the balls from all of us who missed our second encore. Here's to hoping we get No. 13 Baby in Calgary.

He most certainly did NOT do the antlers thing... sorry to break your heart, but he didn't
Hello all. I was at both the Saskatoon and Edmonton shows, and although the antler antics were more prolonged in Saskatoon, he did do it again in Edmonton (although very quickly). Both shows were fantastic! They seemed very jovial last night, especially early on. The extended version of Vamos and Is she Weird were highlights. For a crowd that was 1/5 of the size of Saskatoon, it was lound! The biggest disapointment was when the first encore ended and EVERYBODY was expecting them to come back out. The roadie came out and tuned Joey's guitar, everything looked good and then...a Reds' employee pulls the plug. Perhaps it was backlash from the idiot who climbed on stage or the fact that the entire bar floor was covered in beer bottles. Anyway, fantastic show-very different from Saskatoon, but because of the smaller venue equal in my opinion. |

Posted - 04/19/2004 : 00:00:27 Show was great again tonight...I saw them in Saskatoon, too, and I think they are getting tighter as they go on...if you're hearing faults, get over it, you're listening way too discerningly...I envy the folks who get to hear them in later shows as they get even more confident...Joey was getting more adventurous on some of the guitar solo stuff...got pretty trippy for a bit there, sounded great...after two shows, and my ears aren't ringing a bit, so the sound quality seems fine to me...I'm wrestling with my own psyche as to whether to do the three-peat and see them in Calgary tomorrow...like the Simpsons episode said that one time, if you miss this tour, you better either be dead or in jail... |

Posted - 04/18/2004 : 23:46:59 The show at Prairieland was definitely better - not to downplay the band at all..but the sound was a bit drowned out, and the crowd wasn't as "into the white" as in Saskatoon. The thing I liked about Saskatoon, is that the fans were actually singing along with the tunes, and they made the whole place feel so ALIVE!@!! I met some nice girls from Montana, some very cool guys from Edmonton, and a group of fans from Winnipeg - all in all an AWESOME time.. except for the Patricial Hotel..shit. I could barely sleep with the pounding sounds that seemed like someone was doing plumbing at the beginning of every hour...later I found out it was a fire escape that was being repaired. SHIT. i barely slept.. but hey saskatoon was fun..i found the bus terminal, an internet cafe, a record shop, a pita pit, a YMCA, all within like ONE block.. Edmonton is SOOO spread out.. I mean, it cost me $25. just for a cab back to my hotel..what's up with this city..why is everything so distant.... anyways, i had fun at the show tonight, and i can't wait to see them in Calgary.
