Anybody experienced in border crossing? I've done it a few times, but it has been during the middle of the day, and no one in my cargroup has had anything to drink. We're going to be going back across the border after the Winnipeg concert, and just wondering if we should not have anything to drink that entire night, or if it's okay to have a little to drink, or is it okay for everyone to drink all they want if there's at least a sober driver? Anyone have anything to share regarding this?
Also, will a drivers license be enough ID? Do we need any other ID? I've never needed more than a drivers license before, but I just want to make sure I'm getting across the border to see the Pixies, and I want everything covered.
Finally, does anyone know if the Hwy.75/Interstate 29 border crossing in North Dakota is a 24 hour crossing? My Hwy. 59 crossing we'll be using on the way there closes at midnight.
Thanks!

I'm a fsh with no i's.

I've passed through the border a handful of times, and my mom does it regularly. Usually, they only look at your drivers licence, ask what your trip is for, etc, but they may ask for better ID. You should have either your birth certificate or a passport on hand, just in case (I have known people who were refused without one, and you just have to go back home and get it).

They're not kidding about the 'no jokes', either. Even if it's a little kid making a stupid remark, trying to be funny, if it relates to anything the least bit suspicious, they will search your car.

As long as you have a perfectly sober driver and the passengers can contain themselves enough not to make stupid comments, you shouldn't have to worry about having a few drinks. You are coming back from a concert, afterall. Most of the border guards I've met, both ways, have been pretty nice.

I've crossed the border hundreds of times and borderguards are borderguards are borderguards! Both countries have their good and their bad . Try to stay out of the lane with the "small, short guy with the complex" or the "militant lesbian". Also, try to avoid the "middle-aged, mustached guy" - he couldn't be a cop so he takes it out on younger people 'cause he's mad at the world and looking for ANY excuse to perform that cavity search !

And don't make jokes, borderguards don't seem to like that very much! Especially if the joker is one of your drunk buddies in the back seat! AVOID THE TERM "RENT-A-COP"!

behave on the trip there, whatever on the trip back. 'cause it does not matter you just saw the PIXIES.

and when they ask about the 200 cartons of smokes tell them they are for me.

My friend and I went up to Winnipeg for breakfast once and the chick at the patrol station was hot. This was pre-9/11, though. She's probably gone. Replaced with people who don't need to look hot.

And when they ask if you're planning on selling those 200 cartons of smokes, say "NO."

All,
To cross the border with more ease and speed, you should bring a birth certificate. Also, find the happy medium between hiding your contraband too well and too poorly.

in my experience, going into the US is a lot easier than going into canada, which isn't what you would expect, i bring a passport just in case

my experience is that theyre a-hole going into the states, and nice going into canada.

Hey, I crossed at that border crossing just about a year ago to see the FB&TC's show in Winnipeg. I only had my driver's license with me and the Canadians gave me a big hassle. Stuff like "how do we know you're not from China, your driver's license proves nothing." Watch out for the blonde chick in her mid 40's without a wedding ring, she's a real bitch. While talking with the guys after the show, I found out that this same lady gave their bus driver a hard time cuz he only had his drivers license on him, not a passport or birth certificate. So, to avoid any hassles, play it safe and take a passport or birth certificate with you. Coming back to the US, on the other hand, was a breeze. All they did was open the trunk and send me on my way. Good luck.
