Is it just me or has the last 5-6 years of crappy music finally come to an end? I swear I've been to like 5 good concerts in the last 5 years. Now I can't get tickets to The Pixies in my home town (Vancouver) and I just tried to grab a couple tickets for tonight's Franz Ferdinand show and it is sold out too! I guess this is a good sign, but now I am going to have to pay better attention to when tickets go on sale and stuff.....

The stuff that's past-off as a 'good' alternative to mainstream pop crap is pretty hoary. I think there has to be a major cultural shift in the music world for creative, inventive and original music to truly make a mark in the charts again.

I've seen them a couple of times before. They're from South Dakota, so I've gotta support my state. Yeah, they're pretty damn good. I've hung out with them after a show before too. Very down to earth. And yes, they'll blow you away. Go see 'em, y'all.

Okay, that was the quote I was expecting. Thanks.

Diablo - stop using the word "seminal" , unless you are a published writer that wants to lose his readers. I see you have quite the following on FB.net. I love TLM also, but I'll bet dollars to Doolittles that 50 cent, Avril and half the others you listed don't give a fuck about The Pixies, not to mention their best album. I think in fifty years only you will be rocking out to "classic" kid rock and from what I understand Def Leppard? arrggh!

armageddon outta here!

ShaunitaCalRealJosh,
Why do you keep following me around? Stay on threads that mean something to you, not the ones that mean something to me.

Music has totally sucked for more than 5 years now. I've had to go back in time to discover cool music, and I've found a lot of it. I've also had to get into different genres, such as jazz and blues. I've really enjoyed the blues concerts I've been to in the last few years...unbelievable musicians. I couldn't help but notice that Indigenous is playing at the Fine Line earlier in the month of April. Anyone that lives in the cities, and can make it to that show, I suggest going. They will blow you away.

the Alt Rock station here in San Francisco, Live105, is corporate owned and I recently heard the pixies six times (Gigantic, Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Velouria, where is my mind and monkey gone to heaven) and Los angelos TWICE all on the same day and most within an eight hour period. Hell, Here Comes Your Man is even played in one of the station promos that you hear a million times a day. I deffinatley think corparate radio is picking up on the Pixies.

i think if she really was quoted as saying she didn't know who nirvana was, she was probably being sarcastic.

At least you have some decent college radio to listen to. Our college radio station, which used to play an ecclectic mix of music you couldn't hear anywhere else in the region, was taken over by some guy who is obsessed with competing in the market, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT COLLEGE RADIO IS NOT FOR!!! Linkin Park. Godsmack. The occasional decent tune from the Foo Fighters, but that's about it. It's all pop rock. No underground. No local artists. Since then hardly any bands have come to our college town and every CD shop has closed its doors. The only place to buy music here is WalMart, which I don't count. And the funny thing is, the more mainstream radio station in town, which doesn't pretend to be alternative, can be heard playing Where Is My Mind and Gigantic.

Somehow I knew you would post here.

Although I expected a comment like, "I think Avril Lavigne is the finest musician in the history of all Canadian music. That is, except Rush. When I am not playing raquetball with my many friends down at the Atheletic Club, I like listening to her teen angst music..." etc.. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Oh well!

I didn't say that all popular music is crap, I just pointed out that corporate radio spoonfeeds it's audience with songs that are "focus-group tested and pre-approved for mass audience acceptance" or some shit.

It's popular because most people don't know they are being spoonfed, or don't care. They are content to just sit and wait for MTV to tell them what is "totally popular" so they can go and buy it. Or download it for free.

Avril Lavigne and her "band" is the most perfect example of this I can think of. Her band was manufactured by a record label, her songs "mostly" written by other people, and her "teen angst punk" image is a joke. She said in an interview that she bought her first CD 3 years ago, and until just recently, didn't even know who Nirvana was. Yet she sold how many millions of records?

Porkbomber,
Just because something is popular doesn't mean that it's bad.
porkbone1 Posted - 03/24/2004 : 19:26:50
Hmm. I would like to think that things are getting better...but as long as Avril Lavigne is considered a musician I'm not holding my breath. You know, I think the problem here is with radio conglomerates. Ever wonder why the Pixies are so much bigger in the U.K.? Even with this big reunion tour and concerts selling out in 3 minutes, you won't hear the Pixies on corporate radio. If you do, it's "Here Comes Your Man" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven." Even the radio station that pimped out the April 13th show here in Minneapolis doesn't play the Pixies. I'm starting to listen to college radio stations on the internet just so I can hear a decent variety of music.

So I guess you're right -- the underground scene is improving quite nicely. But at least the way I see it, 95% of everyone else will still be screaming for Britney and Xtina, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit, and my personal favorite, Avril Lavigne.
