The old coliseum was a regular stage, but its gone now, and good riddance (the acoustics were horrible).

the method...of stop tap spin, no talkin'...

Did they used to have the Key or Seattle Center Coliseum as a regular Bumbershoot stage? I know when I first moved to Seattle 6 years ago Bumbershoot, at that time, wasn't using the Key as a regular stage venue. Then a few years ago, when the remodeling/rebuilding of part of Seattle Center started, they began using it because the construction took away some stages. Last year they didn't have a venue there, which coincided with the remodeling being done. So I think they've stopped, for the time being, having the Key as an actual Bumbershoot stage with bands playing throughout the day.

I hope the Pixies do play somewhere else too for everyone missing out on the warm up tour, but I can't think of anywhere here that could accommodate them once they start playing bigger shows that is the kind of place I personally would like to see them play at. I think the Paramount would be too formal--I greatly prefer general admission shows for a band like the Pixies--and I don't think I've ever been to the Moore. Not too many shows there anymore I think, or maybe there's just shows I don't want to see there so I don't pay attention to it. I know the Pixies used to play there. Is it seating or general admission? I suppose the Showbox would be asking too much after the warm up tour.

That's all the more reason I'm making sure I see them on the warm up tour! For the most part, the venues are more the kinds of places I want to see them in. Like The Commodore Ballroom!!! But now with Bumbershoot, I'll also get the full festival experience of seeing them without having to travel for it.

I think we'll see them booking other late summer US festivals now that Bumbershoot is confirmed.

They have been having shows at Key Arena (and before that, "Seattle Center Coliseum") ever since I can remember. I remember seeing B.B. King there at Bumbershoot in 1985. It used to be where all the biggest bands played. It wouldn't be bad if they dont have any shows there now, because like you said the line was insane.

For my friends in Seattle however, I hope they play another show at a place like the Moore or the Paramount too.

The Seattle PI says they will be on the main stage Labor Day. The main stage is the soccer stadium, right? Yeah, it sounds crappy, except one of the times Sonic Youth played. I was actually leaving to see another band when I got about half way back on the field it sounded awesome--a wall of sonic (no pun intended, really) noise. I had to stop and listen for a while more. It was great! Seeing bands there is wonderful despite the acoustics, and patchouli. Cruster is right, "Something about seeing a great band outside as the sun sets on what always feels like the last day of summer...sublime."

I love Bumbershoot. It harkens back to my old SXSW days, when I lived in Texas and SXSW wasn't too big that you couldn't get into shows. My husband and I buy four day passes to Bumbershoot every year and plan out the bands we want to see the next day the night before. Then we spend all day running, literally, from one venue to another. We've never had to wait too long, even to that Elvis Costello show in 1997. And we still got pretty close up front for that. You just have to prioritize your shows. If you really love a band and want to see all the show you will have to get there early and wait a bit longer. Otherwise, we've almost never had problems seeing at least some of a show. Even at the huge Beck fiasco we got in to see the encore. Didn't try to go to Ween that time, saw the line and knew we wouldn't get in.

I don't think they are having shows at The Key Arena anymore. They were just doing that while some of Seattle Center was being remodeled for a few years. Thank goodness. I did hate that long walk they made you do to get into The Key, all the rules about that place (the searches, no food or drinks or even balloons), and no beer garden in there.

WOW, WOW, WOW!! Now I understand the extra excitement other people have expressed that the Pixies are playing in MY TOWN! Practically in my backyard! Well, in the same neighborhood at any rate.

It's gonna be great to see the Pixies at Bumbershoot!! We, my husband and I, were thinking a couple of weeks ago that we hoped the Bumbershoot people were trying to get the Pixies and had even meant to contact them about it. But they came through anyway!! Can't wait!

I grew up in Seattle, and attended Bumbershoot maybe 10 times. As DeBased said, this festival is all about WAITING. We saw Elvis Costello and the Attractions there in 1997, and had to wait in line for about 4 hours to get a seat. It's first-come, first-served! I also saw George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars which was quite the unbelievable show. It all depends on where they play. Outdoors? Inside Key Arena? Could be any venue, but plan to wait and wait and wait.

Also, like many said, the acoustics are often crap. I wouldn't make this my only Pixies show, if at all possible. That having been said, I think Bumbershoot is awesome for many other reasons, and it is worth going anyway. Also hopefully Mr. Limbo will be there. He usually is!

Just saw the news in the Seattle PI this morning. This is going to rule. Vancouver next month and then BUMBERSHOOT in September. I feel like I'm back in high school again. It's shaping up to be the best summer ever...
For those who haven't been, Bumbershoot is crazy big. Because it's so cheap pretty much the whole region attends, which means you go to a lot of shows and are surrounded by people who have no idea what they are about to see. I remember going to the Magnetic Fields a few years ago and getting a crappy seat in the balcony, and being surrounded by people saying, "Now, who are these people again?" After two songs 1/3 of the people in the place left. Frustrating. But, it's also a good way to see bands you might not otherwise see. The trick for the bracelet events is to show up first thing in the morning. Since you can come and go for the day, you can go play in Seattle for a few hours and come back. The Pixies will most likely be outside in the stadium. The acoustics are pretty bad if you're not down on the floor, but if you are...there are worse things in the world. Something about seeing a great band outside as the sun sets on what always feels like the last day of summer...sublime.

Awesome News! Thanks! Yes, the trick to Bumbershoot is be there early for the show you want to see and WAIT.

you go early and you are too cool for school
i can't believe i'm thinking 6 mos ahead
what a dork
marbleslinger Posted - 03/15/2004 : 20:39:12
ive been to bumbershoot many times, ive seen the black crowes, david lee roth, mos def, to name few, its an interesting festival, its cheap, but certain shows are impossible to get into, like the big name acts that they put into a smaller venue within the festy, like ween, the line was so huge to get in to see them that there was still probably a line to get in after they were done playing hahaha,
seattle is a great city!!
