Posted - 02/28/2004 : 17:38:33 I suppose there's much more to it than the official or unofficial OK from Frank or Pixies or their management, to record a show or two, in a less conspicuous way, but I would love to see something like that granted.
I want to be able to enter the Big Easy in Boise with my Sharp Minidisc in my pocket and the stereo mics in as conspicuous place as is allowed. I have a terrible poker face and don't know how to pretend I'm not taping while taping.
As it appears that Mr. Noisy is in some way in contact with someone official from time-to-time, maybe he can look into the possibility of having one forum member, per venue, allowed to tape. Eh, Dave?
My fear is that there's really no way to accomplish this, in the "official sanctioning" sense, and in the practical sense. But it's worth a shot, right?
Otherwise, anyone here have pointers or fool-proof means (what's the plural of means--meanses?) for making it into small venues, and accomplishing mic exposure sufficient for a proper recording, all without having your equipment confiscated? Switchy? taper?

I can almost guarantee you that WFNX Boston will broadcast their show/s when (if...?) they play Massachusetts. A wildly popular hometown band is enough to get them to drop a bit of commercial time. They've broadcast full, live, uncut shows in the past.

I think that may be your best bet. Cheap and easy to make. They're supposed to sound good.

Posted - 02/29/2004 : 13:25:59 I'm going to Paris to see them, I have a sony minisic recorder, but no mic. Whats the cheapest one which would give a decent result? would a £10 Maplin Mini Tie-clip microphone work, or would it just be crap. I can't really afford to spend more than 20... |

Posted - 02/28/2004 : 23:24:28 like switchy said earlier, franks attitude is you can tape if you dont get caught..bottom line is if you get caught by the venue or whatever, and you try to bust the "frank says it ok" line he is not going to back that up. Meaning if they actually do give you the time of day, go backstage and ask Ken or Frank there going to say "it is not permitted at any time". So dont get caught. Ken was not much at all into tapers back in the day of the Pixies. Soundboard recording from the warm up, forget about it, there not going to let you patch in. So forget about reading your soundboard primer. You need to stealth it, and tape the mics up on top of a hat or a conventional tapers method. And hide it down with your junk when going in. There most likely will be FM shows from the euro festivals, but again in america nobody broadcast fm shows because it cuts into there precious commercial time. Thank god for euros when it comes to FM shows.
And remember, there is nothing more agrivating in the world than the kid that goes to a show, wont tape it, then busts back on the forum with the "who taped it" comment a day later...CAUSE MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE then |

WOW. That is incredible. The only thing that might stop me is the possibility that I would contribute to their being discontinued by venues. I'd hate to be the cause of a semi-deaf guy's inability to enjoy his next Frank Black show or something.

sweet, thanks! yeah, i know it's tempting to sing along, and clap and hoot wildly, and yell to your friends how happy you are that they're playing your favorite song.. but for the sake of the recording, it's best to shut up. But yeah, i always say don't sacrifice fully enjoying a great show just because you're uptight about the bootleg. But then again, you could probably enjoy the recording more later if you shut up. It's a balancing act. |

Posted - 02/28/2004 : 21:37:54 Hmm...here's a "Soundboard Taping: Primer". http://www.digitalexperience.com/sbdprimer.html
I recommends getting to know the soundman at the venue. Since the warm-up tour consists of fairly small gigs it should be a lot easier to get permission. I'm not sure if you're traveling to see the show or are near it..but if you are near it you should attend several shows from now until the Pixies concert. Record bands even though they suck just to get the practice and friendship with the soundman. You can practice different techniques for recording, too, and come up with the best one for the big show. That's all I could think of, really, but I hope it works!

Hahahahahaha, that'll be the day. I really hope someone can get a nice soundboard recording of atleast one show. That would rock. I'm going to look up ways to sneak in minidisk-recorders and/or mics. Buahaha. I'll post here if I have any luck finding tips.

Posted - 02/28/2004 : 21:17:26 Thanks everybody.
mnsteelers: I don't quite follow how/why you or FB would distinguish between film/digital cameras from the other side of the lens. Am I missing something in that? Incidentally, at my last FB show I had my digital camera out almost the entire time, snapping photos; however, since I never got the chance to ask, I refrained from using my flash, which left me with a a few dozen crappy shots. OH WELL.
ramona: Yeah, I know. I commented heavily in that thread. He actually condoned the recording on conditions that basically amounted to "make sure no one knows you're doing it." So I'm not concerned terribly with the moral aspect to it or anything. It seems like it would be quite difficult to both keep it all tucked away AND get much of a quality recording out of it. I am also thinking that, given the Pixies' relative notoriety, and FB's probable relative lack of ownership of the rights, they may be more nitpicky at these shows than at FB shows, and even past Pixies shows.
crouton: I will give it my darndest, which probably means I will sheepishly stand behind the sound guy until he says "hey, does that conspicuous bulge in your pants happen to be due to a minidisc player, for which you have brought a male-to-male stereo cable that you'd like to use to patch into the board here? Perhaps this is a place for people to chime in on their plans to record, so we can get an idea of which bases are covered.

Posted - 02/28/2004 : 20:32:27 Yeah, Frank said taping is fine, just don't be a prick to other fans and act like you deserve special treatment just because you're a bootlegger. Well, maybe I'm putting words in Frank's mouth, but I think that's pretty much what he meant. Most shows I go to are 21+, and they don't bother to pat you down, but if I'm going some place that might, I stick my recorder in my pants in the belt buckle / above the junkyard region. It's always worked for me.. though the last time was a nailbitter, as the lady got a bit intimate with me.. but she didn't say anything. i guess she must've thought i was just happy to see her. I'll usually wear a black shirt with a button-up colar.. and run the mic under my shirt and peeking out through the colar. It's black on black, so rarely gets noticed by anyone. But I'm no expert on mic placement.. my recordings are rarely all that great. I hear that dangling the mic(s) off the balcony is good way to cut down on crowd noise, if you can do it. Or try to position yourself near the soundguy.. since they say that's often were the mix sounds the best. And obviously, try to stay away from talkative/loud people. I haven't tried soundboard recording yet, but I'd like to give it a shot one of these days. Posted - 02/28/2004 : 18:05:04 It usually doesn't matter what the bands say, it usually comes down to each individual club. I've never done it myself, but it seems to me the best way to do it is to crotch it...or have a female companion get it in. If they pat you down, obviously they can't pat you there, and they never pat women down.
