Wow, aerodynamics. Thanks for the weather report! That will help me pack. I'm naming you Official Spokane Ambassador!
aerodynamics Posted - 04/23/2004 : 10:19:08
The B-Side is 21+ only.

I hope everyone travelling from out of town has a safe and enjoyable journey. Weather forecast here in Spokane for the weekend looks like high-50s/low-60s with little or no chance for rain.

Any last minute need for directions or anything, post them here or hit me with an e-mail.

um, why don't you ask mwamsley for one of his tickets?
dee brown Posted - 04/20/2004 : 18:06:11
so I guess tickets are hard to come by for sat. in spokane. what about sunday in boise? I'm in san diego and just started researching stuff. the cheapest airfare I found was $204 rounder to boise. should've started the process earlier, but I still want to see the pixies somewhere other than cochella.
roomloo Posted - 04/20/2004 : 14:04:54
Ha, Big Easy sounds a lot like First Avenue here in Minneapolis in terms of getting the show people out early for dance night. Kind of annoying. Anyway, see you guys in Spokane.
mwamsley Posted - 04/20/2004 : 12:51:49
I have two extra tickets for Saturday's show. I live in Seattle. Let me know if interested!

Plant World...okay, thanks for the clarification. I must have missed out on that whole bit. Ah well. If you haven't been to Spokane in a while, it's still the same crappy town, but the downtown area has really been cleaned up/revitalized. Local music scene seems to be fairly thriving as well, although I don't get out much these days.

Recommended time going to dinner? Let's see...doors open at 6:00, show at 7:00. I believe we're going to try to get to the restaurant at approximately 4:00 PM. Two hours is a long stretch, but you can take your time with dinner, drinks, etc., and there will be no pressure from the waitstaff that you're just sitting around waiting because that's what everyone else will be doing too.

By the way...duh...(sound of hand slapping head)... in my attempt to list after show hot spots I completely forgot about the most obvious -- Bourbon Street (that's the name of the restaurant/lounge attached to the Big Easy). If you haven't already had your fill of the place by then that is. It's got a pretty relaxing atmosphere and would probably be the best bet to happen upon a band member or two if they decide to wander and/or mingle after the show (my wife reports spotting the drummer from the Psychadelic Furs in the bar after their show recently).

Less than a week to go. If any one has any more questions or needs directions, etc., just post them here or e-mail me and I'll see if I can provide the necessary information.

Anyone still need tickets? A couple of peeps backed out on the show, so I've got two extra. 2 for $60(+liquor libations :) Drop me a line!

floop Posted - 04/18/2004 : 20:25:00
hey aerodynamics,

considerg how early the shows start at this venue, what time would you recommend going to dinner there, if you're trying to do the whole dinner/preferential entry thing?
sqrrlbait Posted - 04/17/2004 : 09:01:42
Hey Sqrrlbait -- I'm a Spokane native and I have to confess that your "Plant World" reference went right past me. Explain please.

Plant World was a place near the falls downtown where there was a plant shop below and a small venue above. It had a bar and a wooden floor gig space and one of those spiral staircases to the roof. It was mostly afterhours for Big Dipper or Ichabod's. Bands like Fumes, Fatty lumpkin, Bellywipe, Motherload (local or touring punk bands)would play after playing in a bar earlier.

But yeah the Creeps are playing Sat late night and Zeke was to play that show but they backed out. I am coming from PDX on Friday and probably staying in Cheney with friends. I second the Moral Crux show-they are great, old timers but still have it...
aerodynamics Posted - 04/16/2004 : 14:33:30
Ah, that opens up a new catagory. Night spots that are hoppin', but no live band (the three non-music bars I mentioned in my previous post are all very quiet retreats).

My vote here would have to go to a place called The Blue Spark (15 S Howard St -- http://www.thebluespark.com). About three blocks from the Big Easy. Pretty popular hangout for the college age crowd on the weekends. Very good jukebox. Plus there is usually a hot dog stand stationed just outside on the street if you get hungry.

There are a handful of good choices really, but I'm not necessarily the best authority to judge since I don't get out as much as I used to (turning 40 this year). Here's a link to a small downtown Spokane Night Life directory including a small map for reference...

floop Posted - 04/16/2004 : 11:24:10
i don't think i'd want to see another band (that i don't know) right after seeing the best band in the world. i vote for post-Pixies bar action.

the really important question is: among all those bars, which is most likely to have the cutest girls?
aerodynamics Posted - 04/16/2004 : 11:20:59
Yes, it's fucked up, I agree. Before this place opened I had never been to a club show that began and ended so early. On Saturday nights they have what they advertise as "Club Fusion". The place is very popular due to its newness and excellent facilities. The 20 somethings will line up for an hour before hand just to get in on the weekends.

So, have no doubt that the show will begin promptly at the advertised time of 7:00 PM. I have been to three weekend shows there and the staff is extremely efficient. At the last show I attended, Death Cab for Cutie were somewhat curtailed in that they had to cut their encore to only one song and then were quickly rushed off as the preparations were made for the DJ guy and all of his equipment to take to the stage.

An excellent venue otherwise, so I guess that is the price to be paid. Don't be late! And make plans to do something after unless you want to hit the sack early. They advertise Club Fusion to begin at 10:00 PM, but that start time is subject to change on concert nights. I wish they would just can the club BS when a good band rolls into town, but I suppose the money grubbers want to cash in on as many greenbacks as they can get their hands on. Bastards!

Like you, I truly hope the Pixies aren't restricted timewise in any way, or else the owners may have a riot on their hands.

Here's the official website for the Big Easy, by the way...

floop Posted - 04/16/2004 : 10:44:47
thanks a lot for the information. but first off, what the fuck???

the show is going to get out by 10? i've never heard of a headlining act going on that early, on a weekend. so theoretically they'll go on before 9? no way.

if that happens i bet a lot of people will miss the show (i often just go to shows in time to see the headliner)

i guess the plus side is that will leave time for post-Pixies drunkenness. maybe we can all attempt to meet at one particular bar or somethin'..

that still sounds weird to me though. . i hope they don't have to make their set shorter because of some stupid after hours, dance club.
aerodynamics Posted - 04/16/2004 : 10:21:56
The Saturday Pixies show at the Big Easy is liable to get out fairly early since the venue has an after hours club scheduled for the weekends. Advertised club start time is 10:00, but my experience is that they rarely meet that after a show. More likely that the Pixies show will go until 10:00 PM or so, but that will still leave plenty of time afterwards for festivities.

If you want to see a good band, the best best would be to head over to the Detour (http://detour.hasslemedia.com/) where Lookout recording artists Moral Crux (http://www.lookoutrecords.com/bands/band.php3?bnd_id=207) are headlining (http://www.label.hasslemedia.com/flyers/apr24.jpg). They're a great, old time punk rock band from Moses Lake who are guaranteed to tear it up. Other clubs worth considering are the B-Side (http://www.thebsideonline.com/) and Mootsy's (http://www.mootsys.com/). Not sure who's at the latter, but it appears local act The Creeps will be at the B-Side on the 24th. All three of these clubs are within walking distance of the Big Easy in downtown Spokane.

Other after show bets in case you feel like something quieter -- Far West Billiards (1001 W. First Ave.) is right across the street and is a good place to get a drink and play pool. Many tables. There is also an excellent, state of the art sports bar (tons of TVs and table side controls + internet access) nearby called Heroes and Legends(http://www.spokanelegends.com/). If you just want a quiet atmosphere to sip a martini, I would recommend Cavallino Lounge at the Hotel Lusso (North One Post St) or the Peacock Room at the Davenport Hotel (right across the street from the Big Easy) or the Catacombs Pub (http://www.catacombspub.com/) underground right next door to Far West Billiards.

Breakfast...hmmm...the Knight's Diner is great, but a bit far away from downtown. My favorite breakfast spot downtown is Frank's Diner. That's a bit of a hike from city center though (a mile or two) and is very busy on the weekends. The best bet, I would say, is the Satellite Diner at 425 W. Sprague. Only a couple of blocks away and very good food (in a Diner sort of way, if you know what I mean -- if you're looking for something more upscale, let me know). The Satellite is open late and also a good place for an after hours bite to eat after the show as well.

Hey Sqrrlbait -- I'm a Spokane native and I have to confess that your "Plant World" reference went right past me. Explain please.

off topic: can anyone recommend any good breakfast places in the area? i'm stayhing like a block away from the venue. and i'm obsessed with breakfast, so i'm planning ahead two weeks in advance.

also, what do we have for coffee places? just Starbuck? if i don't get a proper coffee fix i become violent
sqrrlbait Posted - 04/15/2004 : 08:00:25
My mistake- ZEKE cancelled. BUT there is a local show the night before which features ex-FUMES singer. If anybody in town for Friday night- stop by and support them. It would be a great start to an awesome weekend.

By no means am I a fan of Alien Crime Syndicate but I know somebody who works with the drummer, Nabil Ayers, and he said the Pixies is Nabil's favorite band of all time. So I give them kudos for getting the opening spot since they are such big fans, but personally I will be showing up late or hanging out in the bar for their set.

(On an historical note, the singer of Alien Crime Syndicate, Joe Reineke, used to be in a great band called the Meices. If only it was them opening...)

I see that an opening act has now been named for the Spokane show -- Alien Crime Syndicate. Very cool...more info and downloads, etc. at the band's website...
