Pretty great setlist for me - got to hear Motorway(!) and Snakes, and didn't have to hear either version of Wave of Mutilation :)
Paz already sounds really tight, and you could tell she's having a great time - particularly on Bone Machine and Tony's Theme (where she did indeed do the intro) |

Posted - 01/16/2014 : 13:20:16 That is a great set. Motorway, Tony, Brick is Red and that run from Gouge to the end looks fantastic. Vamos is always good, glad they played it. I like when they start a show off nice and mellow. I enjoy reading people's reviews, thanks for sharing. |

I liked the pacing of the show with alternating mellow and manic blocks, similar to how Husker Du used to set up up their shows with "triplet blocks." Two things likely affected the show for most posters:
- Massey Hall - always hit & miss with security - Nick Cave last year there was none, packed energetic crowd up front; last night - exceptionally tight, grabbing people looking to move a few feet for a photo or shake a band member's hand at the end/encore
- new songs - yeah I've been a fan since Surfer Rosa too and the new ones don't resonate like a song that's grabbed you for 20-25 years but after touring 8-9 years sans new songs they were pretty close to the chitlin' circuit for me and skipped it last time through town. I liked that it was alot different from other reunion shows - new songs, some less obvious album tracks.
Some people dig shows a la Nick Cave / Tom Waits / Neil Young - never know what you're going to get, every handful's a whole new ball game vs the Ramones - the same 32-33 songs in the same order night after night. I dig 'em both.
Cool insight, thanks for sharing. Snakes sounds interesting, really driving. |

Posted - 01/16/2014 : 07:02:29 i agree that snakes sounded a little weak live. normally songs (from any artist) tend to take on new life when played live but snakes seemed very deflated as compared to the recorded version. can't put my finger on why, though. |

Posted - 01/16/2014 : 05:58:17 "Snakes" has GOT to be tricky to play live, what with the intertwining melody guitar lines and quirky timing.
All things considered, I think this version sounds REALLY good for being at the start of its live show career...

great show, but the pacing was odd, with the first half being really slow and the second half being a lot more upbeat. frank didn't switch to an electric guitar until about 10 songs in! i heard the local morning show here (on indie88) talking about how great the show was. they claimed that as soon as the pixies took the stage the entire place was on their feet and didn't sit down for the whole show, which couldn't be further from the truth. it's a seated venue and the vast majority of the place chose to remain in their seats for the entire show. many stood for the big songs (HCYM and WIMM) but was pretty chilled for the most part.
Most people were sitting until Here Come Your Man, most people were standing after that. Combine a typical Toronto crowd with Massey Hall as the venue and its not exactly a recipe for uncontrolled chaos :-) |

Posted - 01/16/2014 : 02:47:25 charles seemed a bit more subdued than he has been in the last while. not sure why that is when the tour has just begun. paz, as mentioned by kromkamp sounded awesome and really seems to be fitting in well! |

Posted - 01/16/2014 : 02:45:09 btw, here is the set list that charles tweeted out 20 minutes prior to the show they didn't end up doing caribou (which would have been awesome), but they did stick in vamos which wasn't on the set list but was awesome!

Gotta say this is sounding pretty weak live.... maybe it'll tighten up, but the studio verison sounds much much better.
I think it sounds great. I mean, the sound quality of the video is bad, but I'd love to hear it live
