Posted - 11/26/2013 : 09:17:13 I went to the 2nd night at the Hammersmith Apollo , not my first time seeing pixies but definitely the best pixies gig I've attended to date! Apart from the omissions of levitate, velouria, Allison and hexe it was the perfect setlist for me. rock music and tame tore the roof off the place and unlike most gigs I've attended in London , the audience were up for a good night and didn't talk over the tunes. The band seemed to be really enjoying themselves and I got the impression that everybody in the room wanted to give a bit extra as it was the last night of this leg of the tour. Not only the best pixies gig I've attended but one of the best gigs full stop ! A non stop relentless onslaught of perfectly played classics. For anybody who doubts the validity of the pixies without Kim Deal , go and see them on this tour , they really are on the best form of their lives. |

Posted - 11/25/2013 : 11:26:11 Well 24 hours later and my ears are still ringing. Always hard to be objective but both me and the Mrs reckoned that was the best Pixies show we can remember. The band were so tight and the musicianship so good it sounded like a record. Songs that seemed a bit thin when I saw them in September (Havalina, Brick is Red) really sounded fuller and richer. Kim's vocals also seemed to have gotten a lot better. I suppose that could be the mixing but either way they are really on top of things now. Of the new songs Magdalena, Boom, Bagboy, Hexe also sounded great and got a good reaction. Joey still struggles a bit with Indie Cindy on the chorus. He should put a big pedal on it.
The atmosphere in the venue was excellent, everybody around us was fired up and chomping at the bit for the next song. I don't remember the exact flow of songs but I do remember a phase where there was a bunch with U-Mass, Crackity, Levitate, River, No. 13 where it just all kicked off big time. All it was missing for me was Rock Music and Alec Eiffel and I would have been on Cloud 9. |

Posted - 11/25/2013 : 09:22:16 Just watched the shaky audience footage of the first part of the show from the cheap seats, and the vim and vigor of the band at this show is really amazing.
Song to song to song with as little as 5 seconds in between, many of the tunes kicked up a notch in tempo and drive, and a real, serious, thick groove between all four of them...
The new lineup is really starting to gel musically in a tangible way that easily surpasses the first leg of the tour.
After several weeks of watching FBF push his vocals past the limits of what he can probably safely do repeatedly at this stage (and hearing the damage that was seemingly doing to his range), I'm really glad he has noticeably scaled back the screaming, and is now only doing it sporadically, and in the "most key" spots of the songs which demand it.
I don't miss it at all, and I bet most folks don't either. His charisma and dynamism is in no way diminished, and he sounds better vocally on just about everything since being more judicious with the throat shredding.
"Magdalena" is certainly fitting in harmoniously with the BOSSANOVA-era material, indeed. It's great to see Joey speaking so highly of that album in recent interviews. I too believe it might be the single greatest recorded achievement of their career to date, in terms of the combination of songs, performance, production and packaging.
I should also say that the new, extended intro to "Gouge Away" is great (shades of the Catholics' organ-infused arrangement), and I truly wish the band were more interested in deviating more from the recorded/established arrangements of their older material.
Perhaps their insistence on leaving the songs alone in that regard is because they feel the original versions are somewhat sacrosanct, or that the fanbase would not appreciate them altering the mood, tempo, etc... of their earlier stuff -- but I think most folks would be intrigued and accept some experimentation or re-imagining of the songs they know and love.
Being playful, spontaneous and "disrespectful" of the notion of a resolute, iron-clad arrangement or version of a song has long been a hallmark of FBF's solo sets as well as much of his time with the Catholics, and I wish some of that insouciance could bleed over into Pixies shows.
Then again, this has reportedly never been a band to "jam" out ideas per se, which might make it difficult to even create/consider/rehearse alernate arrangements. And perhaps the dynamic that exists between them simply is not conducive to approaching their songs the way, say, Dylan does -- meaning with a keen eye towards their inherent elasticity.
All in all, however, this new phase of the group is sounding and feeling way more impressive and natural than I think many folks would have imagined it would or could, and I am over the moon with happiness that I lived to see what they are up to now and hopefully will be up to in the future.

Posted - 11/25/2013 : 08:17:18 'Magdelena 318' sounded brilliant. They played it when at the Paris show I was at in Sept, but it was really punchy last night.
We had a chat with Kim after the show, who was really friendly. |
