Yeah. I actually left the show thinking that this must be the sort of sound level that they expose Guantanamo Bay prisoners to when they torture them with loud music for days on end. Thanks for the reply, it's good to know it's not just me. It was so weird that nobody else there seemed to care.
Back in March I attended the R.Ring (Breeders' Kelley Deal + Ampline's Mike Montgomery) show here in Groningen at Vera. Perhaps around thirty people attended. It was pleasantly loud and the music was lovely. And I actually ended up chatting with Kelley for some ten minutes after the show when she was done signing CDs and vinyl EPs. It was a far superior experience overall.

Great take of Joey's guitar show right from under him, and nice sound quality.
Starting to doubt myself here. Why do all these videos sound so much better than what I heard in real life? Is it just my stupid brain that can't handle the sound level?
Your brain is not stupid, sound guys and bands who tolerate using insane volume levels at any show are. And criminally lazy too. Sure it's always very easy to shock the hell out of an audience if I expose them to blinking lights and 300db of noise for an hour and half, hell yes this is sheer brutality but the reason is not your music, or the power of rock in this case. Past a certain point, it is not a physical experience, any kind of thrill or even a challenge, just utter bullshit and torture. Very convenient to avoid proposing a decent sound and dealing with the changing parameters of each venue, which err, you know, is a job in itself, and I suspect many involved persons in those revolting choices know what they're doing, don't give a shit grab the money and still do it any way. Quite an appalling state of things. Unfortunately pretty common. |

The sound where I was standing was very distorted, as I said... and then my phone added some distortion of its own, so the recording is barely recognizable (and 100% pure noise in the loudest moments). Doesn't seem worth it. |

So, I was there.
Best parts: the band were on fire, the crowd went wild. I was pushed out of about the 5th row when "Holiday Song" started and beer started flying everywhere as people were violently bouncing off each other. In songs like "Tame", Black Francis hit the highest screaming notes since 1988 but with about twice the power of 1988. And he looks so skinny now. Insane.
Worst parts: sound quality at Paradiso. At least where I was standing, in the front middle of the crowd, there was so much ultra-loud distortion you couldn't even hear half of the music. It sounded like one of those YouTube videos with terrible sound quality. The opening band was Yuck, but I have little idea what those songs were supposed to sound like. In the Pixies performance, Joey's guitar was almost completely lost in the distortion, which was almost funny when I watched (but barely heard) him do his little show during "Vamos". I blame the sound technicians here (the band had their ear monitors/protectors so they wouldn't have noticed). I mean, going wild is nice and all, but I actually came to enjoy the music. :(
Funny, in those videos posted above it sounds much better. But they were shot from one of the balconies upstairs. I wanted to be up close, but apparently I should have been up there to actually hear what these people were playing.
Apart from some waving, the band didn't interact with the audience at all. That's the one part of Kim Deal that I missed. Otherwise Kim Shattuck was perfect.

@sdon: Yeah, I noticed that at the time. Four massive screamers in a row. I wonder how Frank keeps his lungs in his body. :)
@Ernesto: after Subbacultcha they actually played Distance Equals Rates Times Time, and yes, I missed Dead but it was played after Broken Face. I've now corrected the setlist in my original post based on my phone's sound recording (which is as distorted as I remember hearing it IRL, so I shan't bother uploading it). Note that the setlist in your quote of my post is still incorrect.

Sound was perfect from the steps in front of the sound desk - didn't realise quite how loud it was until we left and the ringing really kicked in. I thought they were on really good form, great selection for the setlist and a lot more fun than the last time I saw them (Troxy in 2010). I'm guessing they didn't come back out for WIMM because his voice was done. One of the new songs has a real ACDC-like riff, might have been Hexe. |

Posted - 10/06/2013 : 07:25:54 @Arm: I did wear earplugs, but the noise was so loud they barely made any difference, except for filtering the high frequencies so I could distinguish even less music from the wall of distortion. So I took them out from time to time and just took the hearing damage. If I ever do this again, I'll need something more heavy duty. Would noise cancelling headphones work? |

Posted - 10/06/2013 : 06:56:40 Thanks for the review McDutchie. Have you considered wearing ear plugs? In addition to protecting my hearing, concerts usually sound better. Too bad it was so distorted for you. |
