What an epic end to a string of fabulous shows! Super high energy from the band and the crowd tonight. Full blown mosh pit complete with crowd surfers, and for whatever reason I saw multiple couples making out all through the show. Very weird. The change in venue had to be the reason, a much rowdier/passionate crowd on this part of town.
Magdalena 318 sounded really good, I probably liked this more on first impression than any of the other new songs that debuted this week. Video coming soon!
Plus, we got an actual encore tonight! The one-two punch or Rock Music and Tame was such a balls-to-the-wall way to end the night, I loved it. I wish every week could be like this past one. |

Posted - 01/04/2014 : 06:53:09 Haha, she was playing bass on songs she had no hand in recording. If it was Paz, or Kim Gordon, or whoever, and they looked excited to be there, everyone would likely feel some affinity for them. But yeah, she toured with them for 2.5 months and never recorded a track with the band. I see a disappointment in not having a set lineup, thereby solidifying the immediate future and giving an idea of the direction they were heading. But yeah, for me I have no attachment, just want to feel like the band and new music are here to stay. |

Posted - 01/04/2014 : 02:47:39 What ricj said, exactly. Kim S was proving herself a worthy successor to Kim D by not trying to replace her and instead bringing her own energy to the table. So, everybody had only just started to appreciate her properly and accept her as part of "Pixies 2.0", and suddenly poof! gone. Which was shocking and disappointing. I don't think it's odd to feel that way at all.
|
ricj |
Posted - 01/04/2014 : 02:11:24 Oh yeah I guessed that from the start - I just expected the actual event to be slightly more dramatic and 'controversial' looking... |
natenate101 |
Posted - 01/04/2014 : 01:19:47 ^ what it likely means is that's NOT the reason why she is no longer in the band. Only they know why. |
ricj |
Posted - 01/03/2014 : 22:44:59 Ok maybe 'gutted' is slightly strong but i'm very disappointed. In many ways i'm more disappointed than when when Kim D left in that I guess I wasn't really disappointed at all. Kim D obviously didn't want to be in the band and was preventing them from moving forward so I was quite relieved when she departed - if she didn't want to be in the band then why would I or anyone else want her to be in the band?
Kim S on the other hand seemed like a real shot of life and seemed to be fitting in very well so I was really surprised and sad to see her go. You can even see Frank smiling at her when she goes down to greet the crowd which just makes the whole thing even more weird.. |
natenate101 |
Posted - 01/03/2014 : 19:41:34 You guys are "gutted" over it? Gotta admit, I find that very odd. |
McDutchie |
Posted - 01/03/2014 : 14:41:10 Yup, right with you there. I guess Paz will know to keep to herself. I wouldn't expect much stage personality at future Pixies gigs. I think that's the main way in which Kim Deal's absence will be truly felt long-term. Seems like they're not about to allow anyone else to fill her shoes on stage. |
ricj |
Posted - 01/03/2014 : 13:21:59 Yeah, she only went down to the front row to thank the crowd at the end of the gig...! I imagined it as some wild, impulsive jump off the stage during the middle of a song to rock out in the crowd.
I'm really gutted she's gone.. I thought she was great. |
McDutchie |
Posted - 01/03/2014 : 13:10:55 No kidding! Such a stage diver, eh? Totally wild, man. |

Posted - 09/13/2013 : 22:55:48 that video of Magdalena as well shot by whatever 2013 tech device was available was pretty cool in every aspect but dave's drumming seemed a little off. well not off but not on if you know what i mean. and Kim S also dropped the ball. it seems neither are on the same page [as judging by cell phone vid]. IMO. cant wait to hear a studio version of this because i think it will rock balls.

Posted - 09/13/2013 : 22:01:02 ok, not so much repetitive as a criteria for bad Pixies song (there goes my gun, stormy weather... and your examples) but what disturbs me is Magdalena and Hexe, while repetitive, are not very creative, they're kind of demonstrative instead of witty I sure love them more each time I listen to them, but still, I can't discard the first impression (nor should it be dscarded in fact, it's part of the experience)
Snail lacks dynamics but it has great imagery and atmosphere, like Blown Away

Posted - 09/13/2013 : 18:19:19 I'm not trying to say Magdalena is one thing or the other, I've only heard it a couple times on a cellphone youtube live vid. My opinion and really my only point was that the criteria to judge a Pixies song should be considered carefully, as the compositional realm that Charles works in when in Pixie-mode dictates a bit of a forward-looking approach. As in, keep in mind you'll hear this song probably 50 more times in the relatively near future, and eventually as a recorded version with who knows what kind of interesting studio augmentation, all of which may indeed make it a classic to you (I say you but I mean ME, as the previous sentence is kind of how I approach things). I've just decided that my first impressions are usually wrong with FBF, so I'm to the point where I completely toss it, positive or negative, and just listen again a few times, in a few different environments.

Those are countered by some serious BF yelps and screams and Santiago shredding though.
To me, Joey's making some pretty nifty sounds on this one that I can hear through the cellphone audio. I'll go the other way then to play devils advocate here, just cause. How about Ana? That song has like 18 words, no screaming, no shredding, laid back drumming, but it's great.
Again, I'm really not trying to come across like I'm trying to start something, just discussing. I personally don't feel that yelps and screams are essential to a Pixies song. They are certainly part of many classics, but probably fewer and further between than you may think. That said.... great BF screams and yelps are like ear crack cocaine to me. Which is why I love Blue Eyed Hexe so much.

Ana- not the greatest example. that chord progression is anything but simple and repetitive.
just to play dev's av.

Fair enough. I agree. I was talking about lyrics, drumming, and yelping though. Chord structure and composition-wise, I'd have to have my head in my ass to say Magdalena is beyond basic.

Posted - 09/13/2013 : 17:14:51 I'm on the same page with Silver Snail - doesn't sound interesting to me either. Charles seems to like it though since he's been playing it since that last solo tour (I think he played it for us but I can't remember now for sure). There's probably something there and I just haven't heard it yet. Or it could be one of his rare tracks I just don't go out for.

Posted - 09/13/2013 : 16:17:06 You are right man, and I'm not trying to argue either. My point is that personally, Hexe and even Silver Snail just don't sound as interesting in terms of dynamics and I'm feeling like the two choruses of Hexe and Magdalena will becoming grating because of the repetitions...but as you showed above, many Pixies songs with the right elements can eleviate those types of concerns.
Just gotta see what the final product sounds like and whether it all "works", like those great tracks of the past that you mentioned. |

Hi, sorry, I hate to come off like an asshole, but I gotta have some fun with this one...
Simplistic, repetitive lyrics doesn't seem like a valid gripe against a Pixies song to me.
See:

"Yoohoo!

Friend or foe?
There Goes My Gun"
"I've got something against you I've got something against you Here we go I've got something against you I've got something against you I've got something against you I've got something against you I've got something against you Oh yeah I am one happy prick"

Drumming is lazy too I had the same impression with Blue Eyed Hexe (camouflaged by screaming) So far, some new songs appear to lack those elaborate and weird structures. That's why I love Bagboy, What Goes Boom, Indie Cindy, Silver Snail, Greens And Blues, Classic Masher (and Andro Queen, for its intrinsic qualities) Another Toe, well, not as much, but it's well written Whereas Blue Eyed Hexe, Magdalena 318 are less impressive (and Big New Prinz too)

I agree the chorus is quite repetitious but the music sounds great and verses are intriguing. Just might make you hate the word Magdalena, he said it hella times! Agree about Hexe too. All the stuff we have heard so far is catchy without doubt, just maybe a little simplistic in terms of structure, and needs more Joey. Don't dislike any of it though, and we won't really know jack until the studio versions surface. So many already seemed surprised by the production on the first EP songs, that there will surely be some surprised with these as well. |
