Just got back from the first El Rey show in Los Angeles, thought I'd get things started with the setlist and some general thoughts. Here's a pic I snapped of Kim's foot petal and setlist for the night. (she uses this to play the organ bass notes on Bagboy with her feet, pretty rad if you ask me)

http://instagram.com/p/eEW4JZxda-/

Setlist:

Big New Prinz (The Fall Cover)
Head On
U-Mass
Something Against You
Brick Is Red
Wave of Mutilation
Crackity Jones
Broken Face
Isla De Encanta
Havalina
Subbacultcha
Distance Equals Rate Times Time
What Goes Boom
Rock Music
Hey
Debaser
I've Been Tired
I'm Amazed
Blue Eyed Hexe
Bagboy
No. 13 Baby
Cactus (setlist said Here Comes Your Man, but the band played this instead)
Gouge Away
Another Toe
Tame
Planet of Sound

No Encore despite Andro Queen, Where is My Mind, and Indie Cindy being on the setlist. Seemed like an abrupt end, not sure what happened with the band and why they didn't come back. Roadies and venue security seemed to be caught off guard that the band wasn't coming back either. After a few minutes the lights came on, the curtain closed, and the crowd booed. Crowd kept chantng for an encore for 10 minutes, nothing.

All in all it was an awesome show. I loved hearing old classics like D=RxT and Rock Music being added to the setlist. Kim seems to be having a great time and actually moves around on stage quite a bit, giving an added sense of energy to the band. The stage setup and lighting were really awesome.

I have some vids I took from the front row I'll be posting... even though the sound quality may be sucky, it'll still give people an idea of what the show was like.

as requested by a few people, here is the recording of the show:
https://mega.co.nz/#!tkYyiKgC!E-P4hj4EwZHSFJbrAbeiowilPbR-z0B27pXj1V_ZwT8

I have simply zipped the folder up I downloaded from dime.
it's still in lossless flac format, hence it's relatively large size.

Because a synth can produce another tone, can have more decay, sustain and release
Or something like that

rivum Posted - 09/13/2013 : 03:06:28
so are they in place of her playing something on the bass? why doesn't she just play it on the bass?
yarbles Posted - 09/12/2013 : 11:37:42
She is playing bass notes. But it's the more organ/synth-like bass notes that are held during the verses. She doesn't play those on the bass guitar.

what exactly is she doing with those organ pedals?
doesn't seem to be doing anything other than playing bass notes?
i'm confused.

Nice! I overheard some tapers talking to each other in line before doors opened, I was wondering when the recordings would show up. Tempted to sync the audio to my vids from the front row to get a good sound mix.

Yes, a very mobile BF on stage that night, like a big muscular panther at times
I like how he steps back on Bagboy's first chorus to let Kim frontstage.

Hey Yarbles, thanks again for the videos. The youtube playlist you put together pretty much changed my mind completely about the new tracks. Can't stop listening to them now.

From your instagram photo I ended on Kim S's account and found a comment about what happened with the encore...

Dude. So good last night! Too bad we weren't able to meet. We were a bit far off, didn't really get any good shots.... And left pretty much right away so Kristen wouldn't have to wait for us. Was there really no encore planned or did something happen? Some people were pissed but whatever. Haha

kimshattuck
Thanks Andre! Nothing bad happened. Maybe tired voices after a heavy set. We had a blast too! Say hi to Jackee!

Yeah, I mentioned in an earlier post that she has cues for her vocal parts taped on her pedal. Look at the image I posted in the first post. It's got abbreviations for all the cover your teeth type lines for each verse.

I was by the soundboard and the sonic quality coming from the stage was crisp, assaultingly LOUD and perfect. I kept peeking at the checklist, too, and they flip-flopped Wave and Crackity, much to the lightboard operators horror. He flew into a blur of resetting, but never once did anything technically go wrong. The last 3 songs were supposed to be Andro, Where is my Mind and Indie Cindy, but as previously posted they inexplicably tore offstage after Planet of Sound. To be honest, I think Charles' voice was getting tired. Haven't heard him unleash such howls for 20 years! Again, I feel most people need to give Another Toe a good few more listens. The audience loved it, and its hooky and catchy. It was a blistering 1 hour and 18 minutes of insane aural utopia. I saw the Pixies around 10 times during their reunion years...I have to say THIS concert levelled all of them. The grinding chaotic force of how they were in the 80's was back full-swing...and new Kim is a blinding force of energy, bringing a new kick-start quality, being talky with the crowd, but never trying to emulate or copy Kim Deal in personality. She's spunky, slightly dangerous and a perfect fit. I'm nothing but excited for this new phoenix phase of PIXIES!

Now that review has me excited! I wonder if the sniffy reaction to the new songs from some quarters has fired Frank up a bit. Always worked for Man Utd. Love that clip of Rock Musix.

Myles Mangino says he's drawn up lighting patterns for 70 songs in total. There were, I think, 63 on Joey's practice sheets.

Great show. It feels weird to say it's the best I've seen them but there was such a huge sort of proving-ourselves vibe to it. FBF seemed more fired up than I've seen him in years. The first 20-30 minutes, up to "Havalina" was almost without a break, just bam-bam-bam one after the other. Loved all the new setlist adds.

The new material is really hit or miss for me but I have to say "Another Toe" sounded great live. It sounded more like a big rocker in the vein of "Dead Man's Curve". The production on the EP totally tears the guts out of it.
