looking forward to tonights gig, unfortunately i'm quite sick today which sux.
but it won't stop me from going...
am actually as excited about the support thats been announced: Die! Die! Die! (http://www.myspace.com/diediedienz) are a NZ band i've been following for quite a few years, but have never had a chance to see them live.
not sure how they'll go at the mammoth CBS Arena, but it should be a hoot.

we live 300km south of christchurch, so we had a wee shake, but nothing too bad.
miraculous that no-one was killed - the city looks utterly devastated.
very lucky it was while everyone was sleeping.

well after sleeping on it, i've decided i liked this gig even more than i thought i had....which was odd seeing as i was stone cold sober, had been awake since 4am and was feeling quite sick.
the band were more relaxed than any of the 4 previous times i'd seen them.
kim is always relaxed, but frank doesn't often appear to be relaxed in this persona, but he was last night.
frank didn't say more than a few words, but it was obvious he was enjoying himself.
a few times he even let the audience sing chorus's and such, which i'd never seen before.
and i guess the 2nd encore was a good sign too.
it was just a really fun gig.
and where have kim's backing vocals on gouge away gone?
and sorry, i did not record the gig.

Openers Die! Die! Die! are vibrant proof that the Dunedin sound and the Flying Nun label is alive! alive! alive!
Songs like We Built Our Own Oppressors, HT, Paquin and Wasted Lands, off new album Form, show them at the top of their game, bending sound until sound was on it's knees pleading for mercy.
Seminal band Pixies are such an influential force in music lore - having inspired Nirvana and Radiohead and countless others - I was stunned that this one-off New Zealand show hadn't sold out.
That didn't stop the ecstatic cult of sweaty Pixies fans present from being caught up in the moment, particularly those crowding the stage front in the somewhat soulless barn-type environs of the CBS Canterbury Arena, keen to see the legendary Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering.
I saw this revolutionary band at Splendour in the Grass festival in Australia last weekend and there they had seemed weary from their mammoth Dolittle tour. In Christchurch last night they were fully present in all their ripe, gory genius kicking off with Cecilia Ann.
After performing two sold-out Dolittle shows in Auckland earlier this year, it was glorious to hear a smattering of goodness from Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde from the Boston four-piece.
Where Is My Mind drew the biggest loud quiet loud crowd reaction with Santiago's epic feedback but others such as Dig For Fire, Allison, Hey, Here Comes Your Man, Nimrod's Son, Cactus, Is She Weird and loads more were delivered so feverishly and frantically it was akin to a spiritual experience.
Sound guys brought in from Wellington ensured everything from classics to classic B-sides were received rapturously by the amped up crowd.
Black Francis' screams made my throat hurt and goosebumps pop, his vocals gritty and primal. Banter was limited to Deal pronouncing Dunedin and commenting often on how far we must all have to travel.
After the crowd stomped wildly for an encore Pixies obliged, ripping through first encore Gigantic and Debaser and then another encore with house lights on.

gig was great.
enjoyed it more than the doolittle date in auckland from march.
the band seemed to really enjoy themselves.
quite a lot of mistakes, especially from kim, but frank seemed in great spirits.
so many bossanova songs, which was superb.
a full 90min gig which i think is the longest in terms of time of the 5 times i've seen 'em.
2 encores which was a nice suprise.
