I’ll hopefully post some pics a bit later…sorry for the upcoming long post..but experiences like this don’t happen everyday!(not a typical black letter day.)

..so it was an everyday Friday morning..get up at 5:30 am and turn on the computer and check my email..i got this email from my GREAT buddy Kelly…

"Going to a secret show in Hamilton ......I am guest list plus one.....get on a plane, mang!!"

he was 90% kidding about me getting on a plane..he didn’t think a married guy with 2 young kids would book a same day flight for a “secret” show that hadn’t even been 100% confirmed!” I had to think quick. I hadn’t seen frank or the pixies play in almost 3 years!.. November 10, 2006 in Calgary was the last show…(RIP Duane Jarvis)..

I talked it over with mrs. Fu and she said, “JUST DO IT!! HELL YA! Why are you even hesitating?!! Pixies doing a “secret” show and you have a chance to get in!! Plus you get to see your great bud Kel who’s living in Toronto! You have to support the band and your friends!! Book that ticket!” Seriously, mrs. Fu is amazing….the only drawback to the whole experience, if you can even call it that, is that she wasn’t able to be there. But we did see the Pixies together at the Commodore in Vancouver, BC during their Pixies warm up reunion tour on Friday, April 22, 2004. (there is a very high chance that little fu was conceived on that magical evening and then born 9 months later on January 7, 2005- the exact same date that Frank’s first child, Jack, was born!)

…so anyways I booked my flight directly to Hamilton and then return from Toronto on Sunday so I could see the Pixies and other bands play on Saturday at the "Virgin" festival. (yes…it is called the "Virgin" festival) with 4 Winnipeg buddies who are all currently living in Toronto.

When my flight arrived in Hamilton at 6:00 pm and we still hadn’t had confirmation that there would actually be a show! So we all went to a restaurant called "La Luna" which was next door to the club, the Casbah. The food and service was excellent! We had some drinks, some food…ya we were all pretty excited…we then went next door to see what was going on…we talked to the owner or manager of the club and all of our names were on the list. i was on the list!! thanks to you know who! The people at the club were complete class acts. Since this was a “secret” show they had to respect the bands wishes to do their best in trying to keep it a “secret”. They said the band might not play if the "secret" was out. The owner politely asked me if it would be possible to invert my frank black cult of ray t which i happily obliged…I don’t even think the show was leaked on the internet..except I did change my facebook status in the morning that I was off to Hamilton for a “secret” pixies show! I only have a few facebook friends so we were still pretty safe…broken face gave me the thumbs up on my status change!

So we get into the club at 8:30 or so. The anticipation in the crowd was phenomenal. The first few rows were packed. I started chatting it up with a few locals from the “hammer”. All very nice people. One of my favourite things about live music is meeting fans and sharing stories. I had a great conversation with a guy named Joel who’s in a band that play pixies and frank black covers. They cover “speedy marie” and I ask him if he knows the background to the songwriting genius of said song. He say’s, “no. I think the song is about a car.” (i thought the same for about 10 years until this forum enlightened me.) So I told Joel and the others around how this song is like an onion…you have to peel back all the layers to appreciate the true beauty of it. Not only is the music beautiful, but it is a love song, an acrostic, and a Shakespearean sonnet.

I had brought mrs. Fu’s itouch and have about 30 pics of previous fb/pixies shows so we looked at the pics and talked about other great stories. Another guy, Tyler, said how he drove 25 hours to Winnipeg from Hamilton for the reunion show on april 14, 2004! You the man Ty!

At 9:00 or so I think, the pixies came on stage! Then it was 90 minutes of pure music bliss! I couldn’t believe it…getting all goose bumpy..everyone around was smiling…kim was beaming…frank was focused. I still can’t get over how great his voice sounds..and then the SCREAM!! Unbelievable! For the first few songs you could tell that the lights were getting in frank's eyes. If I had brought my shades I would have handed them to him cause he was like 5 feet away!

There were some great shout outs between songs…”we love you kimmi!”, “soccer moms are hot!”. My buddy who is also a huge frank black fan (and straight), yelled out, “I HAVE A MAN CRUSH ON YOU FRANK!”

So yes, an amazing experience. Thanks to everyone who made this happen.

fu

nice vids fu. like the grizzly bear and franz at virgin. i wonder if that rainbow ride is the one from playland. it used to be here in vancouver but disappeared about 10 years ago.

The waxworks were an immensely eloquent dissertation on the wonderful ordinariness of mankind.

however, the following evening, after seeing the pixies at the "virgin" fest we went to the EX next door and hung out with the carnies and ate mini donuts. my buddy won the kitty from the show me your tears album..

is that what carnies look like in Canada? because they don't look like that here

There were 198 people at the show.

fumanbru, you were a little too excited about the whole Winnipeg thing. I'll accept that you were delirious from your travels and excited to see your favourite band, but wow - over the top about yelling out asking if anyone from the 'peg was in attendance. Haha!

Pixies were great as always! I haven't seen them since 2005 but I loved it and so did my wife too (who, according to the pics and knowing you had a Frank Black shirt on, meant you were to the right of her - you almost knocked her over at one point).

Hi to longtime board members. I probably haven't posted here in 5 years. So nice to see you! Sorry that this info couldn't have been released before the show, but couldn't jeopardize that word get out and the band decide to cancel last minute... I had to swear secrecy to the person that made it happen.

Must have been an awesome show! Weird that 'Bossanova' still gets totally snubbed.

Excited about seeing them soon, though!
