Posted - 09/02/2005 : 16:59:32 You guys got Alec Eiffel and Dead! They played Dead in Phoenix Park last year, sadly I was late and had to walk for ages listening to it blasting out, and No.13 Baby (Although happily they played it this time around.) |

My kind of tame!
Thanks so much for sharing this amazing story with us. You must still be flying high from it.

Posted - 09/02/2005 : 05:02:53 OK, I can't give the whole details as to how we got in, lest the person who did it for us gets into trouble. Suffice to say, myself and my friend had to claim to be "sound and lighting engineers" if asked, and it's not what you know, it's about the sisters of people your mates know from the Bury St Edmonds music scene ;-)
Anyway, we're in there, and I have never been at an aftershow before, being a child of the suburbs. And I'm stood there thinking "this whole thing will be slightly lacking as an anecdote if I end up just saying how I watched various Pixies walk past me without acting upon it". They were all there, including (I think) Frank's stepkids and Kelley Deal. So, I rationalised "who's allegedly the chatty one?", and I plucked up the courage to go and speak to Kim Deal. Asked her to sign a business card for me (all I had to hand; I mean, I love the Pixies, but I can't sacrifice a £20 note for an autograph), and she says "sure, have you got a pen?" "Errr, no...?". So Kim grabs a pen off a passer by, and I think "a boy scout might have actually made sure he had a bloody pen before asking that." Jolly decent of her though ;-)
My little conversation with Frank was actually the easiest.... seemed a quiet, humble guy, pretty personable. But having obtained my physical evidence that I'd been there already, I contented myself with asking to shake his hand, and the Honeycomb question I mentioned above. Joey was stood at the bar, and he made me most nervy, as my all time guitar hero (plus he comes across as being pretty shy face to face). So I shook his hand too, and then attempted to convey that he was my favourite guitar player. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but somehow I think "My neighbours are so thrilled I gave up trying to play guitar, because I've always wanted to sound like you" is open to misinterpretation! Certainly Joey looked a bit confused; I live in a nice cosy residential area surrounded by families with 2.4 children who think James Blunt is a bit on the abstract side.... if ever I put the Pixies on when I have any of them in the car it's always "what the hell is this racket?".
Dave Lovering was magic tricking his way around all and sundry; and always seemed to have the biggest group around him, so I left him be.
We did notice assorted A-listers there, but our derision was reserved for James from Busted (who folk from the UK will have heard of; I do hope their fame didn't travel). Dear me; that guy has paid to have someone make his hair look like that? Plus he never moved from his table; got the distinct impression he had no idea who the Pixies were. My friend seriously thought about going over and asking him if he was the guy from McFly, but we thought that might get us thrown out.
All a bit tame I know, but the adrenaline from it is the only thing keeping me awake today! |

It was a much better show, IMHO. And god is my voice suffering for it today.
Blagged my way into the aftershow, and (having royally embarrassed myself with Kim and Joey) asked Frank if he was having any luck getting the Honeycomb musicians to tour with him. An shrug, an enigmatic smile and a "Who knows?" were the reply.
You lucky bastard!
Please define "blagged" because I, for one, would like to find myself in the aftershow getting enigmatic smiles from Frank.

Posted - 09/02/2005 : 03:06:01 Yeah, amazing show it was. The sound seemed a lot better than on the previous night, particularly during the Futureheads' set.
The crowd was wild, must have been a couple of dozen people hauled out by security guards. We were right down at the front, just in front of Kim.
Musically, the band were a lot tighter than on the previous night. Totally different flavour to the show as well, much faster and louder.
We were chatting to one of the security guys before the show began, who we recognised from the previous night. At the end of the show, he called us back over and offered us one of the setlists! Will scan later on. 'Planet of Sound' wasn't on the list.
Joey's playing on 'Vamos' was a delight, completely different to the night before. The usual tricks; taking a photo of the audience to begin with.
Frank was again playing the Tele with the black pickguard.
