The Bellrays were quite good. I'd checked them out after hearing they'd be the opening band and was shocked to discover a group I actually looked forward to seeing. I felt a little bad when the crowd was a bit lukewarm to them at first, but people warmed up by the end of their set. Good stuff.

I last saw the Pixies in Nov., at the first night of their stand at the Aragon. That was, and still is, tied for my favorite of any concert I've been to. The sound wasn't that great, but the setlist, the band and (except for one dick during the first part of Planet Of Sound) the crowd most definitely were.

If you're curious, the other half of the tie is getting to see the Arcade Fire at some tiny ballroom on Thanksgiving and getting to stand literally right up against the stage.

The Pixies played the Murat Theater in Indy tonight, and I dropped the ball. Had I been paying attention during the middle of April (the height, and worst part, of a semester of college for me), I'd have heard about the show when it was announced, and gotten fantastic seats. As it is, I managed to get tickets for myself and a friend on the floor, just a few rows behind where the balcony starts, stage left. Luckily my view was unobstructed.

It was as awesome as the Aragon show, though in a somewhat different way. The show wasn't GA, but on the other hand, and the sound was much better tonight (although Kim's mic was a little low. You could hear her fine when she was singing mostly, but if she wasn't right up on the mic you couldn't). The crowd's energy seemed good. On the one hand, I wasn't anywhere near as close to the stage tonight as I was back in Nov., but I had a more or less unobstructed view of the stage, and was in a nice part of the crowd (ie: not many people doing The Standing Still). Everything worked out nicely, in the end.

The band was enthusiastic, and energetic. Aside from dropping the beat a little, late in Caribou, they were killing.

The setlist? I'm not positive what's below is all of it, but it looks close. I swear it was alphabetical. I noticed when Dead started. Frank joked about it a while later when (it sounded like) No. 13 Baby was where songs in the I's should be.

Another special treat was Frank giving a shout out to the town I grew up in. He asked if anyone remembered Fort Wayne. I was 4 when they played there (Frank said '87), so I didn't remember. But it was cool.

I was surprised at how not-boring Stormy Weather is. They manage to make it far, far more dynamic a song than the album version. Frank bellowing out the last repetition of the words was cool too.

If someone's keeping track, both Joey and Dave caught the drum stick this time (though Joey's catch was a close call).

I would've loved to hear River Euphrates, or to have them dust off Motorway To Roswell, but I have absolutely no complaints. Wonderful way to spend an evening.

What I can remember of the setlist:

Allison
Bone Machine
Broken Face
Cactus
Caribou
Dead
Debaser
Ed Is Dead
Gigantic
Gouge Away
Here Comes Your Man
Hey
I Bleed
In Heaven
Into The White
La La Love You
Monkey Gone To Heaven
Mr. Grieves
Nimrod's Son
No. 13 Baby
Stormy Weather
Tame
U-Mass
Vamos
Wave Of Mutilation
Where Is My Mind?
---
Winterlong

I admit I may have forgotten one or two, but at least I know I've got the order right. Heh.

EDIT: Added stuff about Stormy Weather. And some date-fixage

Just had to add that we made it on the 5 best list! w00t!

from http://pixiesdiscs.com/blog.php

if you've ordered the "Five Best" set, or wondered which five shows will be contained therein, here's the cut:
San Francisco
Two great sets in a legendary theater.
Denver
Red Rocks? Pixies? Come on.
Indianapolis
A fantastic alphabetical show.
Raleigh
The band's favorite show of the tour, in a packed warehouse in an office park.
Washington, DC
A gold record award, and a good outdoor venue.
We thought that was the best combination of songs, performances, and venues, and we're sure you'll agree.

Anyone have pics from this show?

Wow agoddard and everyone else. Thanks for all the details... I was raised in nap town and it was great hearing the setlist and all the other details!!! I just ordered two copies of this at Pixiesdiscs.com.

I am sort of like how Frank says he is with the cds, so I thought a little insurance pollicy is a good thing

This was my first Pixies show, it was fucking great. Too bad the security was so thick no one could enjoy a little smoke.

I mean that if you went to see a lot of groups that were very meaningful to you many years ago, chances are that the group would end up playing a few of your favorites and a lot of newer songs that you may not care for. For instance, if one went to see REM, they probably would play only a couple of songs from the albums during the Chronic Town to Fables of the Reconstruction era. And they'd play way too many new songs.
For fans of Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, and Doolittle, the last year or so worth of concerts from the Pixies has been great!

"One of the great things about the last year's shows is that the Pixies are playing most of the songs the fans want to hear."

Well, obviously, but you couldn't say that there are very many original Pixies songs that people wouldn't want to hear, could you?

It was nice to have the Pixies in our hometown, even if for just one night!

One of the great things about the last year's shows is that the Pixies are playing most of the songs the fans want to hear. Obviously, there are a few tunes each night that some people wished they'd played. But, for the most part, they play to the fans.

Highlights for me were: Dead (missed that in the Aragon shows I saw), Tame, Gouge Away, and Where Is My Mind. How can Frank sing Tame every other night and have any voice left?

I also liked the lit-up clothes dryer vents in the stage set.

You got the setlist correct! It was the longest show of the tour so far and the only alphabetical show since the reunion! I had a great time! I love that venue!

Ha. Yes. I was so gone by the time I was done writing the actual post, that I couldn't think of the date, so I looked at my computer's clock. Of course, it was after midnight, so...

Mea culpa.
