Hope they'll play "new" songs really soon and that they will play at the Olympia or Zenith in France, I want to see them play Alec Eiffel! And the Sad Punk! And Stormy Weather! And The Happening, Motorway to Roswell, Break My Body, Ana and Letter To Memphis!

sheesh, where to begin?..

left around 9:45, and drove to some good tunes. after almost 3 hours of driving, we stop at this restaurant called 'blusteries.'

now, let me tell you folks a little about blusteries. the term 'hodge-podge' doesnt even begin to describe the eclectic mix of items you will find inside. from kermit the frog umbrellas to posters of alaska and partying monkeys, im sure youll find something there amusing. also, they are very proud of their '100% bison burgers' which they advertise on the wall. the lemonade tasted like if you threw a couple lemon warheads into a glass of mountain dew. then you get your food, fries and chicken strips in my case. when you realise you were not given a fork, you go look for one, and end up having to ask an employee to get you one from back in the cooking area. and they only have the highest quality silverware at blusteries. well... highest quality PLASTIC silverware that cant even cut through a fucking chicken strip. then, when you need to use the restroom, ponder for 5 minutes on whether you are an 'ajashi' or 'agashi.' the name really says it all with this place.

so we leave the dining utopia that is blusteries, and set out upon the road. it was not long until we arrived at the gorge amphitheater.

the first stop was at the merchandise booth, and i got one of the coolest pixies shirts ive seen. the front has a guitar tab for part of bone machine on it! call me a guitar nerd, but i thought it was insanely cool, so i had to snatch one of those bad boys. the back has the dates for this north american tour. very cool.

awesome shirt in hand, we trek on over to the wookie stage, where the dears are set to play in about 20 minutes. so we wait for a while, and then the dears take stage.

so they start off with some song i hadnt heard before, which was really cool. and then, they decide they were going to play all of my favorite songs, 'lost in the plot,' 'who are you, defenders of the universe?,' and '22: the death of all romance,' the latter of which was absolutely amazing, and easilly the best of the songs they played. they played some more off 'no more cities' and a couple other old ones all of which thoroughly rocked the little wokie stage, and then they left. but not before thanking us for having them at such a 'GORGEous venue.' his words, not mine.

so we now had a lot of time to kill, since we didnt really care about arcade fire and they were playing before wilco, so we found some shade, as it was blisteringly hot out. we sat around the back area under a tree and ate popsicles and slushies. which, if you did not know, are the absolute best things to eat or drink when you are in the 90 degree heat. we could hear arcade fire in the background, but they didnt do anything to make me change my opinion of them. while sitting around, we saw this 5-6 year old kid with a wilco shirt, which my brother dubbed 'the coolest thing [he] has ever seen.' and before long, wilco finally emerged.

this is the second time i have seen wilco. the first was front row, dead center at bumbershoot a few years back. this time, we were about as far back as you could get, so it was quite a different experience. however i enjoyed it just as much. ill admit im not as caught up on wilco as i should be, i just heard 'a ghost is born' for the first time on the car ride up there. they played a lot off that album, including what could become one of my favorite wilco tracks, 'im a wheel' i believe its called. they also busted out my long-time favorite 'heavy metal drummer' and also 'shot in the arm' off of 'summer teeth.' complete with amusing michael jackson anecdotes and telling us we 'fucking rocked' because he 'wouldnt be caught dead out in this heat,' jeff tweedy was his usual crazy-ass self and was hilarious as expected. hes a great frontman. their set was a bit short, but was all quality.

now there was a lot more waiting for the pixies, and we got kanye west and modest mouse in between.

kanye west... i really dont care for him. im not too big on hip hop in general. i can appreciate it, but i dont really find much of it that i really like. and ive always wondered why anyone would pay good money to go see a rap artist in concert, since it seemed like it would be kind of dull to me. well, now i know. kanye was talking to the crowd inbetween every single song, and had this connection with the crowd that was actually really cool. i still didnt like the music, but i was able to really appreciate what he does. also, he quoted 'chappelle's show' (take a wild guess which line).

modest mouse. for about the first half of their set i didnt pay much attention, i was having a good conversation about music with my brother. but then at around 9:40, i decided i was going to go venture down to the pit area, to score primo position for the pixies. when i was down there, i was actually finally listening to their set, and i thought they were pretty good. it convinced me to look into their stuff at least.

so after modest mouse, i used the people moving out of the crowd to help myself get farther in, and with no trouble at all, i manage to land myself right in front of joey santiago's domain, one person away from the railing. which is essentially where i was at bumbershoot. i told myself i wouldnt scream like a little girl when the pixies came out, but...

the pixies came out, and i started screaming like a little girl. after they all got situated they busted out into 'in heaven (lady in the radiator song)' which was great. then they stepped the pace up a notch with 'wave of mutilation (uk surf)' which was a nice touch, and then into 'where is my mind?' to start to kick things into overdrive. the rest of the order is a bit hazy, since i wasnt taking notes or anything, but i believe the next song was 'nimrod's son' which i do believe was the best song that night by any band on any stage. everything about it was perfect, the raw energy, the drums, bass, scorching guitar, and frank's hellish little laugh at the chorus. frank was definately on top of his game tonight. his individual performance was so much better than i remember it being at bumbershoot, and he was pretty awesome there. dave and kim were in their respective grooves, as usual, and joey rocked my socks off on every single song they played which included...

'im amazed' - awesome live. i only wish frank had screamed out the 'TO ARIZONAAAA!' part. other than that minor beef, excellent.
'ed is dead' - you guys no how much i love this song, and i dont think anyone of the 20,000 people at the gorge were screaming 'ED! IS! DEAAAAAD!' as loudly or enthusiastically as i was. god i love that song...
'the sad punk' - a tour de force in screaming. really. im sure that even if you never cared for the song on record, you would love it live. some great energy, and frank can still belt it out like he used to.
'i bleed' - this has always been one of my least favorites on doolittle, but it blew me away at bumbershoot, and it blew me away tonight. it really shines live and loud. i could never crank it up to a desireable volume in my house.
'isla de encanta' - also to be filed under 'must be heard live.' if this song isnt on the setlist, it is badly flawed.
'wave of mutilation' - call me an idiot, but i LOVED hearing this song twice. the first time it was perfect in slowly building up the noise level, and then when the concert is rolling, BAM! fast version (aka superior version)! worked great again, and i will no longer stand for people complaining about hearing this song twice in one night.
'vamos' - i dont think i even need to say anything about that.

sadly no 'alec eiffel' or 'allison,' but also no 'stormy weather' so it kind of balanced out as far as the newly unveiled songs go. i think the set tonight was just perfect. i mean, aside from my usual 'it would have been better with letter to memphis' complaint, i think this set was as close to perfect as you could get without it. everything flowed together into one continuous stream of ass-kicking music, that reminded me once more that the pixies are the greatest band in the universe, and that it is unlikely that anyone will ever surpass them. they are simply the best.

then after finding the car, driving home, getting a speeding ticket, and continuing to drive home, i arrived... at home, where i jumped on the computer and started typing.

unfortunately, out of the 3 people i was supposed to meet up with today, i successfully encountered 0 of them. i guess i undermined the sheer hugeness of the gorge.

i would like to end by stating how delightfully ironic that the concert was sponsored by http://www.tobaccosmokesyou.com
