Posted - 05/31/2005 : 06:05:41 After the lights went down before the early show Thursday, the house music broke into a loud Pink Floyd's 1967 "Interstellar Overdrive" as gig intro music. About the first 15-20 seconds or so, if that much. Reminded me of that Dylan track FB&C used repeatedly a few years ago. Had me wondering whether that was to be the tour's intro send off, but I guess not. That's the only show that featured it, at least in Portland. Guess they chose it to kickoff the 2005 tour. Did they do anything like that in SF? |

Posted - 05/29/2005 : 15:54:51 Lomsak, they actually played Winterlong at the second show, the late one on Thursday. I thought that Frank still sounded great during the performance. And he may have been getting hoarse toward the end of the first show, but I think the performance of Debaser at the end of the show was better than any of the others I heard in Portland (I went to all 4 Portland shows).
I posted some other comments on the thread for the May 27th late show (about that show and also the early show on the 26th). I won't repost everything here, but if anyone is interested they can go there. |

Posted - 05/28/2005 : 06:27:38 Finally Allison has appeared, it was a surprise that they didn't play it last year. Well I hope more "new" songs appear (all over the world, trompe le monde, evil hearted you, rock music, etc..)
People who went to this show: Did the Pixies play the "all broke parts...we all mend" part during I'm Amazed?? |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 20:54:15 I would have actually flown out just to hear Santo, if I had a guarantee they'd be playing it. I think that's my favorite Pixies song. |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 16:34:48 i could do without theme from narc and santo ..
for me, all the b sides from the first two singles are the fucking shit. pixies are one of the only bands where their b-sides are as good or better than the album songs |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 08:56:42 I guess that the band consider almost all the songs off Trompe and Bossa as B-Sides... They are no hits for them. |

they lied when they advertised this particular show as a Rarities/B-Sides show.
As I recall, it wasn't the band's idea to do a B-sides and rarities show. That was something someone (their manager I think) came up with and somehow it found its way onto the posters for the Portalnd show. The band wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea, but Frank Black decided to rehearse a few B-sides because the fans would be expecting them. In other words, you're lucky you got any rarities at all. |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 08:17:27 More Trompe and Bossanova would be appreciated... And last time, they didn't have much time to rehearse, is it the same this year?
By the way, how they do for the keyboards parts of Alec Eiffel? |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 05:53:08 I guess they didn't have much time to rehearse lots of new songs besides a lot of other people will be dissapointed if they don't do the hits even at a B-sides show
I'm glad the setlist is more dynamic than last year

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 03:18:38 screw the b-sides, when you can hear bossa & trompe !!!
i mean, baileys walk, the manta ray things, rovk a my soul - yes nice, but there is a reason why these are b-sides, i thing. winterlong was played at the last tour, i think.
but i agree, theme from narc & santo would be cool.

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 03:01:36 You're right Lojak.
They didn't play 25+ songs that were "B-sides/Rarities." This is Preposterous!
That poster flat out lied to you! You deserve retribution!!!
Please contact Harvery Birdman, Attorney at Law, and he will assist you in suing the shit out of that lying poster!
P.S. Has anyone else ever heard of a B-sides/Rarities show before, especially in poster form?
If so, please contact Harvey Birdman immediately and explain to him what B-sides and Rarities are. |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 01:34:26 Alec Eiffel, The Sad Punk, Dancing The Manta Ray, I'm Amazed, Stormy Weather
That's five new songs for this year. Alec Eiffel is one of my favorite Pixies songs, and I was thrilled to hear them play it. But for Christ's sake, when a band touts a show as a B-sides/rarities show, I'm going to expect to hear a few B-sides and rarities. More than five at least (two of which they played AGAIN at the BEST OF show), especially when they play 25 song set (which was admittedly generous, but not what I was hoping for).
All I'm saying is that it WASN'T a B-sides/rarities show. That's the reason I bought the ticket in the first place! To see some Theme From Narc, Manta Ray, Bailey's Walk, Rocka My Soul(!!), Winterlong(!). They could have spent some time and made the show a LOT more special than it was.
I'm seeing them on Saturday at Sasquatch. I'm expecting to see a best-of show there, and I'm excited for that. But they lied when they advertised this particular show as a Rarities/B-Sides show. |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 01:32:17 Alec Eiffel is a surprising choice because they are keyboards parts and they played it! I am really glad knowing the'll play this one in the futur. |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 00:54:18 Lomsak,
I don't like to denigrate other people on message boards, everybody's entitled to their own opinion and such, so I'll just say I'm sorry you were disappointed and hope you have a better time at other shows in the future.
Just so we're all clear though,
You saw the first PIXIES show this year. You saw them play FIVE different songs they haven't played for at least a DECADE. You saw them play those five songs along with some of the BEST songs ever recorded in the history of music. You saw all of this in a TINY venue.
Please call me first when your telethon starts, butthole.
Honestly, did anyone think they were actually gonna play a full set of different songs from the 35 or so they played last year? Did you think they'd ever have a show w/o Monkey, Vamos, Wave, WIMM, Debaser, Tame and Gouge? Sure, they may drop 1 or 2 of those on any particular night, but most of 'em are gonna be played. Would you really want it any other way?
If so, I love you, but you are literally certifiable.
Good luck next time sak. |

Posted - 05/27/2005 : 00:29:07 Aww! Stormy Weather! I Bleed! Dancing The Manta Ray! Agreed, the 2nd half of the setlist is disappointing but the first 5 songs are worth the ticket price alone IMO.

Posted - 05/26/2005 : 23:15:13 yeah, i've seen the pixies a few times, now. I was really REALLY looking forward to see a B-Sides/Rarities show. As far as I could tell, they only played 1 b-side (Dancing the Manta Ray). Other than that, the set could have been interchangeable with any other they have played on any other night.
I was very disappointed. I actually wanted my $40 worth of B-sides. If I wanted to see the best-of show, i would've bought a late ticket.
In other news, Frank Black had to cut the encore short to only 1 song (Debaser), because his voice was getting really horse. I wonder how he sounded for the late show. |

Posted - 05/26/2005 : 22:08:31 the sad punk was great- they started it off pretty 'rare' ish, at last trompe songs, but then it turned into the classics and was a bit of a let down- however I've never seen them have so much fun and rock out as much as they did on stage before.
