Posted - 12/02/2004 : 12:54:07 Overall, I think my mood (which wasn't the greatest) and the partially blocked view for some of the show, affected my experience. Maybe too, the idea that I was seeing the Pixies had me in some kind of shock. Anyway, I wasn't that moved by the concert, which was disappointing. While I told myself not to have any expectations I still think I had much to high ones.
Also, the JAR is perhaps not the best place to see a show, though fortunately where I was at (midpoint between soundboard and stage) the songs sounded fine.
Actually, the songs sounded great! Frank's voice was strong and it was cool to see him dueting with Kim. Dave seemed really into it, pounding away on the drums, flipping a stick into the air and catching it (Vamos and Tame--I think). Kim told everyone her Mom was in the audience. Frank was pretty quiet.
The Vamos solo was probably the highlight for me. Joey made some noises, caught Dave's drumstick, set the guitar on the stand and then went crazy with it while Frank and Kim hovered by Dave's drumset. Frank sitting on the riser as him and Kim smiled at Joey.
Towards the end of his solo, Joey did a 'robot-walk' back to his guitar which really cracked up his bandmates. All this with the stage mainly in black with white flashing lights. He tosses the drumstick back, picks up his guitar and with his left hand taps out a fast line while his right mimics the motions in the air, almost as if one hand were the other's puppet.
Another highlight was Gouge Away that opened with the longer intro and then into the first verse. There was no Holiday Song or Nimrod's Son which I didn't realize till after the show.
The beginning of Broken Face was a bit extended, as Frank wandered over to the side of the stage to say something to a roadie.
Anyway, it's not like this was a terrible show, it's just for whatever reason, the music didn't move me as expected. After the concert I got the setlist and my disclive boot (the second disc had a different city crossed out in black marker--I guess they had run low on discs for this show) and was already debating driving out to Detroit for the next show.
Ed is Dead had Frank playing the chords at the end all by himself which sounded really good. The two encore songs were Bone Machine and Gigantic, the latter having the extended ending with eveyrone saying goodnight which was great.
As you can see, the setlist stayed pretty accurate up until towards the end.
