Posted - 11/30/2004 : 22:25:32 I just got back from amherst, and I can't stop smiling. The Pixies were PHENOMINAL!!! I had doubts about how good they would be live because some of the disclive cd performances were occasionally weak.
Disclive sucks.
The Pixies, oh my god, such a great set. I tried to keep a setlist but there were 3 seperate mosh pits around me along with some crowd surfing, which sadly failed miserably..
They played a normal set minus Blown Away, Is She Weird, Subbacultua, Levitate Me, Here Comes Your Man, Winterlong, and Into The White. They did play Head On, PLanet Of Sound, UMASS(DUH!). The Set was exactly an hour and a half, I saw Kelley Deal before the show with a few filmmakers obviously working on next year's all access DVD.
Mission Of Burma kicked ass, The Bennies weren't that good, but the mix was off....
All in all a great fucking night, and I get to do it all over again tomorrow night.

Posted - 12/05/2004 : 08:31:02 Sonic Youth's music is a nightmare...so tuneless. How anyone can say that they were "groundbreaking" just baffles me. If they were groundbreaking, where are the bands following in their wake, making horrible, distorted, guitar-garbage songs? Ehhh, they don't exist. And then acting like the Pixies were beneath them? Ha, just one of the Pixies has more personality and artistic ability than that entire band. Pretty funny. Kim Gordan wishes she were Kimmy. Truthfully, the only CD I've ever thrown away was Sonic Youth Daydream Nation, their "classic". Absolute garbage |

Posted - 12/02/2004 : 20:29:45 If Kim and Thurston were there, I'm betting it was more for Mission of Burma than the Pixies. I know they both own a farm near northhampton so its not like they drove up from NYC to catch the Pixies. I don't think there's any heat between the bands, I read an interview with Frank commending Sonic Youth for sticking it out, and I didn't read any venom in that VH1 interview they had.
I love both bands, but they do different types of music, maybe Kim and Thurston will show up on the DVD next year, along with J. Mascus.. |

Posted - 12/02/2004 : 17:34:25 Well them talking shit about the Pixies might have to do with their relationship with Kim. I think Bob Pollard has said some shit about Frank in the past, and he and Kim used to be very close. Maybe it's that whole and enemy of my friend is and enemy of mine thing. Who knows. They're certainly jumping on the bandwagon now that the tour is huge.

Posted - 12/02/2004 : 17:15:51 So do we have any idea why Sonic Youth would see The Pixies if they disliked them? Kim Deal has even guested on a Sonic Youth album. Very weird to me Thurston has never heard Surfer Rosa. Then again, Frank has never been a Sonic Youth fan.
Maybe it was to see Mission of Burma? |

Posted - 12/02/2004 : 14:32:03 Hmm, so that interview was from May of this year. Well, I guess they don't really care for the pixies. I guess that's cool, they are one of those "too-cool-for-school" kind of bands, but I don't begrudge them that, I think it's pretty funny. I think Kim Deal's kind of the same way, she's talked a lot of shit about other bands but I'm sure there's no real contempt behind any of it. If Sonic Youth doesn't like the pixies, that's fine, and if anybody doesn't like Sonic Youth, that's fine too. My only real issue was with the comment that Sonic Youth is a bad band that makes bad music. I guess they were there for the same reasons that you go to see your friend's band's gig, even though you think they kinda suck. I'll bet they probably came away more impressed than they thought they'd be. |

Posted - 12/02/2004 : 10:31:00 Oh, they were probably just there to make fun of the band, eat their smoked salmon and drink all the near-beer. ;) |

quote:
The Pixies – "Tony's Theme" – Surfer Rosa
Thurston: "Toni's Thing"? What's she saying? Oh, "Toni's Theme."
Kim: Is this some L.A. punk band? I don't know.
Thurston: It's contemporary. Ok, is it the Kills?
Kim: I've never heard the Kills.
VH1: It's the Pixies.
Kim: The Pixies! I saw their videos on TV but I've never heard a Pixies record in my life.
Thurston Moore: I don't know Surfer Rosa at all. I know it's a classic. I shouldn't say this – but when the Pixies were around, I was not much of an enthusiast. I was into more far-out things. The Pixies to me were a pop-punk band. They were collegiate in a way. I remember when Nirvana was name-checking The Pixies all the time. I was like "You're joking." But they weren't, because they were buying bootlegs of Pixies concerts on the road. I was like, "Are you guys nuts?" [Laughs]
There's another interview mentioning the Pixies floating around somewhere, but this is the only one I could find with less than 2 minutes of searching.

yes and no, you have a point there. i mean, i just expressed my current opinion & feelings towards them. i didn't want to say they are crappy and useless (well, i did), but i have really grown out of them. as a said, i liked them for a long time, as many people do, but nowadays i wouldn't buy those records. maybe i'm just getting old. and that interview did happen. i read it with my own eyes.

Posted - 12/02/2004 : 09:04:55 What's with all this hostility towards Sonic Youth? I'm not sure what interview you guys are citing where they said they don't like the pixies (I'm sure this must have been a misquote, or taken out of context, or some kind of joke), but Kim Deal and them have always been very friendly, and to completely write off their music as "shit without substance" is an incredibly ignorant statement. I seriously doubt they'd have lasted this long and had so much critical success if they were simply some dumb art band. |

the sonic youth guys/ladies are pretty useless, imo. hypocrites and liars, i will see them in the fire. ya, that is correct, they said in an interview they didn't even know who the pixies are, and now they are going to the concert. i bet they always had all the pixies records, but they thought it ain't cool admitting that they like them.
don't get me wrong, i was a huge SY fan once. i have all their records up to washing machine. but there was a certain point were i realized that, for me, their music is "shit without substance" (a term used by FB, but not for SY). i mean, SY is somehow the complete opposite to FB/Pixies. They don't have any decent song, it's just extremely head-oriented & blown up. there is a certain embarassing momentum in their art thingy, i can't get straight.

Posted - 12/01/2004 : 16:59:20 I agree, it was my first Pixies experience and it was an excellent show. I'm real glad they played Mr. Grieves, it's one of my favorites. Now I'm gonna go vandalize Frank Black's old room in Sylvan. :) |

Posted - 12/01/2004 : 16:21:16 kim and thurston were their? oh my god thats awesome. i had floor seats and i waited an hour and a half to outside to get in, and i was up against the barricade. they played a blistering set, but no, subbacultcha was not played. they were amazing, the best live show ive ever seen. they tore through those songs, and vamos was amazing with joey using the drumstick as a magic stick. that was so cool. bennies went on at 730, burma at 830, and pixies at 930. the openers stayed to a 30 minute show. |

Posted - 12/01/2004 : 15:52:16 The Pixies didn't play Subbaculture...were you refering to Burma or the Bennies? (missed most of these acts).
Great show, excellent time, too bad I couldn't have been up closer. I DID have a seat a few rows down from Kim Gordan and Thurston Moore...that caught me by surprise. |

Posted - 12/01/2004 : 09:26:02 They did play Subbacultcha...
Great show. Everyone was in fine form. They sounded as good as they did in their heyday and it was great to see them actually having a good time!
I thought both openers were good. The sound was definitely not dialed in yet as the kick and bass were ridiculously loud and floppy. The guitarist for Mission of Burma was amazing and actually showed up Joey in my opinion.
Something funny happened outside the Mullins Center. There was a 40 something woman wearing a winter coat and a miniskirt with crazy make-up and hair protesting the show. She was yelling something about "pathetic 52 year olds opening up for The Pixies" and holding a sign protesting Mission of Burma. I couldn't understand what the hell she was on about, but I asked someone in line and they said she was accusing the guitarist from Mission of Burma of being a deadbeat Dad to her child. She'd been a groupie for 25 years and I guessed got knocked up by him and wanted a piece of his Pixie money!
MRGRIEVES - Not sure when The Bennies went on but Mission of Burma was at 8:30 and the Pixies at 9:30 (Doors were at 6:30PM)

Posted - 12/01/2004 : 06:33:19 What time did all the different bands hit the stage? I know the show was scheduled for 7:30. What time did Mission of Burma go on? The Pixies?
I'm asking because I'm going to Lowell tonight and want to make sure I see Mission of Burma as well. |
