Posted - 10/21/2004 : 09:14:08 Its the day after the Pixies show at Stubbs, Austin TX. Good venue, good crowd, a good time had by all. The first half of the show hit some speedbumps with mix problems/tuning problems/forgotten words - and Frank disconnecting himself at one point. It all let up to a pretty awesome medley.
Best part of the show was the band looking like they enjoyed it. By the second half, everyone had hit their stride and rocked our faces off.
Today the Pixies are recording a performance for Austin City Limits - don't know when it will air but check PBS for details. |

Posted - 10/22/2004 : 14:03:52 From a friend of mine there in Austin. Man, oh man. He is the man of steel.
Quite a night last night... I was at a stop light in front of Stubb's just before the show started (I was looking for a parking space), when Frank and Joey rounded the corner. They were about ten feet from me. But some jackass on the other side of me (also at the light) yelled through my window "Hey, Frank!". Blackie looked right at me thinking it was me that yelled. Not really having anything to say and not wanting to be attached to one of those "Hey <celebrity's-name-here>, look over here. Hey. HEY!" yelling fits, I averted my gaze. So the guys next to me ruined a moment where I could just passively take in one of my favorite rockers- unnoticed- as he did his thing (albeit just walking to his gig). I did get to see them tho', which, admittedly, was a bit of a thrill.
Its a respect thing for me. I'm the type of person that when going to strip bars, limits himself to stolen glances or looks the girls in the eyes the whole time.
So I found a good place- entirely excluded- to listen to the show. And, brother, did they ever sound good. Kim singing Into The White was just fantastic. She's never sounded better. (And I never really liked that song.) But they pulled out some surprising numbers: I Bleed, Isla de whatsit, Planet of Sound...
I thought, at one point, that maybe I could clamor up this fence and see if I could catch a peek. I started up, brushing all this foliage out of the way as I made my way to the top, and as the light got better closer to the top, I realized that all these leaves brushing me in the face looked a whole lot like poison oak. "Bastards!" "The clever bastards!" "I thought this was way too easy..." So I rushed off to this bar across the street to give my face and eyes a good rinse. I was crossing the street on my way back and BAM! I was hit by a car whose passengers were so caught up in listening to the Pixies as they drove by that they neglected to see me at all until I came through their windshield. It was probably my most rock-star moment ever: I came out without a scratch. I somehow had the sense to- instead of jumping away- jump up. Had I tried to run away or zig or zag I'm positive things would have turned out much worse. But, as it was, I had left some pretty major damage to the car for a guy on foot. The policeman was astonished that I wasn't hurt. And the two ladies in the car thought I was either a god or I had hit my head when I pulled out my juice harp first thing to check it for bendage. (It was- after all- in my breast pocket closest to the side that shattered the glass.) I was eager to joke about it and put the car passengers at ease; they were really scared. I was, though, so hyped about feeling unhurt that I wondered if maybe I really could have been hurt and the adrenaline rush was covering the pain. As we all kind of waited to see if any immediate pain was going to set in, I realized what a great thing this was going to be for me to have had this happen with no injuries. I mean, how often does a person get to smash through the windshield of a car and walk away at all. ...let alone unscathed? We exchanged numbers (she called today to make sure I was still okay) and they offered to pay my way into the Pixies show. I told them it was sold out and they offered to go down and demand that I be let in or buy a scalper's ticket or something. I declined. So- yeah- after that (fortunately) brief interlude I went back and listened to the rest of the show. ...and I've yet to see any rash from the poison oak. Maybe I'm indestructible.

The Pixies January 29 Austin City Limits caputres one of the year's biggest rock 'n' roll reunions as legendary alt-rockers The Pixies perform. With vintage fire the band takes the stage to perform their classics filled with brutal noise and impressionistic lyrics. |
