Posted - 10/13/2004 : 21:10:34 Yet another excellent performance by Charles and company. I wasn't nearly as impressed, however, as I was with last night's show. The vocals weren't quite as strong tonight, nor the band as tight. But it was still a great show! I was way up in the balcony, so I couldn't see incredibly well, but everyone looked great (wearing the same clothes as last night, of course) and the lights were much better than last night. Here's the setlist:
1. In Heaven 2. Wave (surf) 3. Here Comes Yr Man 4. Winterlong 5. Bone Machine 6. Subbacultcha 7. Dead 8. Cactus 9. Bleed 10. # 13 11. Head On 12. Crackity Jones 13. Debaser 14. U-Mass 15. Levitate Me 16. Gouge 17. Broken Face 18. Something Agaisnt You 19. Tame 20. Caribou 21. Hey 22. Monkey 23. Velouria 24. Mr. Grieves 25. Nimrod 26. Holiday Song 27. Vamos 28. Where is my Mind
ENCORE 29. Wave (Doolittle version) 30. Gigantic
Well, that's all for now. I'm exhausted and still have another Pixies gig to go to tomorrow, so I'm going to bed.

So who is going tonight?
ˇViva los Católicos!
My sister lives in the neighborhood of the Fox and got there early when they went on sale. It was purely her doing. I flew in from New York for it!
Meanwhile, did you go the second night, and which song was it that they played slowly for the last 2/3rds -- Wasn't it Holiday Song? That was my favorite part. But both nights were awesome.

Posted - 10/16/2004 : 03:44:51 Hey.
Well, they've come and gone from Atlanta, but I am just back in South Georgia to report on it all.
First off, I was lucky enough to see the Pixies on the Trompe tour opening up for U2 (Achtung Baby). I like U2, but truthfully, I was more interested in seeing the Pixies, since I had not been able to get into the Center Stage and smaller club shows before that. Those sold out in like no time flat.
Boy, am I glad I did. That show was good. This one was better.
I thought starting off with "In Heaven" was chilling. Sure, the band made a few mistakes: David missed a slap on Here Comes Your Man. But their performance was amazing, and I thought that the sound at the Fox was terrific (as usual).
Kim's bass was way up in the mix, and crushed into my very soul.
There was also some of the most on-key crowd singing I've ever heard. It was beautiful to hear almost the entire audience singing along, in key, to several songs. Obscure beauties in the grand scheme of the pop world, and the whole place went nuts.
The energy where I was at (Center Orchestra, Row PP), was electric. Everybody was singing and dancing, and you could tell the Pixies appreciated the energy. Kim pointed out something or somebody in the balcony to Frank Black.
The set list was my own personal Pixies setlist. They did Levitate Me! Also, virtually the entire Doolittle record. And it was great to hear all albums represented.
I thought the flow of the songs was organic as well.
All in all, a great show.
Tuesday was an entirely different vibe, but beautiful nonetheless. However, where I was on Tuesday (Left side Orch, couple of rows from very back), the crowd was not nearly into it like the people around me in night one. But Tuesday is another story.
P.S.
Please please please for the love of God, if *anybody* taped these shows, send me an email at allroy1@hotmail.com. I'm now officially begging.
I spoke with the sound man, and he told me for sure they did not record them, so we'll have to trust to our friends the 'audience recording' guerillas. Preferrably those with girlfriends with large purses. ;)

Posted - 10/15/2004 : 23:07:34 This was the last of 3 shows Tampa, Orlando and the Atlanta, Orlando was by far the best but the atmosphere in Atlanta was great. Tampa was a close 3rd and it was my first time ever see a live show, fan for over 14 years just never had the chance. I recommend seeing them in a general admission place if ya can, all I can say is thank you Pixies and everybody involved with this. This has been a high water mark in my life and I am glad it happened!!!!
damn I got to see Tampa, Orlando and Atlanta..Thank You. my buddy got a set list to Tampa and he wouldn't even let me hold it. |

Posted - 10/15/2004 : 16:49:54 Hantra, I just reread my post and realized how snotty it sounded. Sorry about that, it was not my intent. I just can't picture the Pixies putting on some wacky Flaming Lips/Motley Crue superproduction. Maybe they were having an off night when you saw them. Plus, I'm horribly jealous that you got to see the Pumpkins :) |

The Thrills showed more emotion? The singer dances around like an ass. I'd be horrified if Frank started pulling those moves in concert. I'd say what you got is pretty standard for the Pixies - a no nonsense, kick-ass rock show. The more songs they can cram into the time frame they're given, the better.
I mean no disrespect saying that, I just feel that when I listen to some studio recordings of the Pixies, and especially FB, the emotion translates through the songs. And the rushed feel of that show didn't really seem to allow that to happen.
Like on a couple of The Thrills' songs, it was clear that there was emotion behind the lyrics, and it came through. Perhaps it is nothing more than interaction with the audience. I saw the Smashing Pumpkins in a venue 1/3 the size of the Fox on their last tour. The way they interacted with the crowd, and the emotion coming from the band was indisputable.
I disagree with the "more songs they can play in one show the better" theory. But I come from that camp. I mean having listened to the Grateful Dead for a long time, sure I missed some songs on certain nights that I wish they would have done, but that never ruined a show for me b/c the ones they did were usually amazing, and emotional.
I don't want to make a big deal out of it, but I was wondering if that was the way they put on a show. I mean, I love Clapton, and when I see his shows, I feel nearly the same way. I know there is emotion behind the songs for him, but it doesn't come through in a show that is as tightly structured, and has a specific pace every night.
Anyhow thanks for the reply, and I understand a bit better now that you said that was norm for the Pixies. I still enjoyed the hell out of the show, and am looking forward to seeing them again. I think when they do come with some new stuff it will be great because they all are more musically mature now.

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 20:45:18 Well this was my first show. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I must say that The Thrills were really good too!
I have to ask though. . . Did it seem rushed to anyone else? I mean. . . I am not sure there was a lot of emotion there. It was kinda like "We got all these songs to play, and this much time to do it, so go go go!". .
Or is that the way the shows have always been? Perhaps it has something to do with chemistry, or something like that. I think The Thrills showed more emotion during their set. Don't get me wrong, I loved it. But I am used to seeing bands like Phish, Steve Kimock, and some others who put on unpredictable, fun shows with lots of emotion.
Am I alone on this?

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 20:10:36 He was at some weird side door. It was probably 30 min after it was over. I heard Frank err Black err Charles and Kim jet to the van after the show is over. Im probably posting this too late for any help to catch em. heh |

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 14:13:55 I had very good balcony seats.
I thought the lighting scheme with the screen and "trees" was great.
Kim stared at David's hi-hat pedal for most of the night except when singing.
She seemed off on a lot of the backups - not in pitch, but like she was a beat or two behind where they should have fallen. This would not have been that noticeable if the band hadn't been so tight and stuck so closely to the album versions.
Joey's drumstick thing in "Vamos" seems hokey and formulaic after so many times. He should ditch it.
It reminded me of when I saw Spinal Tap in the same venue back in '92. Nigel Tufnel put his guitar on a stand while the band left the stage, and he hit it with a stick and then threw horsehoes at it while it was feeding back at full volume.
Frank's voice was very supple and strong. It sounded a few times like he was about to just croak, though, and there was one song (I forget which one) about half way through - it might have been "Gouge Away" - where it looked like he went over and asked Kim to take over and sing the rest for him, since she seemed to perk up and start to move toward her mic, but then he went back to the center and finished it himself.
David's toms were too soft at times and crazy loud at others. That was strange.
I was really hoping for "Bam Thwok" or "Planet of Sound," but hey - what are you gonna do? They'll probably play them tonight while I'm back in Savannah...
In many respects, this was as good, if not better than when I saw them on the Trompe Tour, but back then they played more stuff off the last two albums, and I REALLY think that would help balance out the shows.
The setlist is just cockeyed without stuff like "Motorway," "Allison," "Dig For Fire," "The Sad Punk," and "All Over The World."
But maybe thats just me.

My friend stuck around and got to meet Joey and got a picture with him. I was hoping for Planet of Sound but my dreams were shot down :( I wish i could go tonight but oh well. |

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 10:20:46 They have been playing Wave twice since the reunion kicked off. They do it once as the album version and then once in the UK surf/In Heaven medley. I wish they'd drop the album version and put in another song.

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 10:15:29 the show was amazing last night. the fox was gorgeous, we had seats 10 rows back, perfect, could see really well and wasn't too close. Kim was playing mostly into the speaker though.
what was with playing Wave twice? that was a little different.. |

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 10:07:55 This is somewhat off-topic -- but have they been playing IS SHE WEIRD? at all lately?? Recall seeing it on a few setlists early on but have not been keeping tabs. |

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 08:56:37 I thought the show was great - 1st I've seen. I thought the sound guy could have turned the bass down just a bit, but other than that no complaints. That may have been due to me sitting under the balcony - felt like the bass was echoing off of the balcony. Tonight I'm on the first row of the balcony, can't wait! As we were walking up the side walk a van pulled up and the Pixies got out of it. Pretty cool to be so close for a brief moment! |

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 08:55:01 I was on the Joey side of the front row and -- WOW. A few funny moments of mix-ups and such between the band but overall they seemed to be having as great a time as we were in the crowd. And I was ESPECIALLY gratified to hear as many Trompe Le Monde songs as one is likely to hear on this tour! Umass, Head on, Subbacultcha -- and Velouria from Bossonova! I was thrilled AND Winterlong! This was my first Pixies show ever after missing them since I was 14 and the set was perfect.
Going back tonight! Can't wait. Balcony this time, get a higher perspective on the band!
