I don't know if this has been posted (every post has to say that to avoid "I like heard that like a month ago man...etc etc) but i never heard Kim pouring cold water on the new album idea before...

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1491493/20040929/index.jhtml?headlines=true

Extract:

The truth is the Pixies have yet to discuss recording what would be the influential band's sixth studio release. Black, singer/bassist Kim Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering do have some concerns — ruining their legacy being chief among them.

"As a listener, I'm prepared to love a band and then 12 years later they come up with a new album and it's just like, 'Eh,' " Deal said, surrounded by her bandmates backstage at a recent tour stop. "I do that even if the album's OK even. I don't hate it or anything, but I don't [get excited]."

"Black: [I wrote] another song" This as yet unwritten unrecorded unplanned unpromised and insubstantial new Pixies album is going to kick ass.

Yeah Carl,... her article seemed like a twisted excuse to write about her #1 band the Sex Pistols.. I am sorry, 40 isn't "old". Oh well.

I was gonna post that link. The Pixies have been featured on MTV.com a lot lately. Here's a couple of other things.

The Vail Daily article is supposedly written by a fan who claims 'Dig For Fire' is on 'Doolittle'(1988? 1989!-Sorry for being an anorak!).

i think there probably will be an album..kim was probably commenting on the fact that she knows what people might say about a new album not being wise..she thinks that way too.. i'd say none of them are completely sold on the idea but its a definite possibility..50:50 maybe

If they were planning on releasing an album, I would figure they'd be playing some new songs by now.

Sure this article has sort of a "no new pixies album" vibe to it, but if you read the other MTV article posted on Monday, it's totally the opposite. The other article makes it sound like it's just a matter of time. As a huge, giant pixies fan, I like to think this article is just posing an alternative viewpoint. Based on Mr. Thompson's comments in the other article, I think the outlook is actually pretty good for a new album.

MTV schemtv.

First why don't those record companies release it???:
The singer has also completed the acoustic Honeycomb, a record he made in Nashville with several noted session musicians

"I'm at the mercy of the record business, so I have no idea [when it will be released]," Black said. "All I know is that every time I bring it up, people get grouchy and just want to talk about the Pixies tour."

Two.. I totally support the Pixies...and where they are at. I know they care so much about the fans... but I am glad they are taking their time and doing what is right.

That being... what I think is "right" or rather..."ideal" for them is to set up their own record label... which takes time...

During this time they can play with things and mull it over... what is right artistically, personally and for their families.

I can tell that the band is hyper-perfectionistic... this is to me a a very awesome thing... I can understand how they are somewhat tenative about such a huge decision.

As far as their concerns about denograting the later stuff... it happens... it happens to most bands. Anyway... I hope that they don't mistake denograting the sound with a new sound... think of the Beatles and how many times they reinvented their sound...I don't expect them to sound the same-- but I expect them to sound cool, progressive...yet have those bare bone punk and rock elements...I don't expect the lyrics to be similar...

But if they feel good and right about it... that is great...

Remember they are ahead of their times... so it does have a decent chance of not gaining mainstream acceptance for another decade or so...

I just hope that they don't hold themselves back if they don't need to... but I also hope they ALL get the vibe this is the right thing... Que sera sera

I included that subject line because it was the title of the article. I left out the rest "But Another New Track's On The Way" because there was alot about the cover track in the general Pixies discussion area. The title of the article was "New Pixies LP Unlikely, But Another New Track's On The Way". Copy and paste.

If the Pixies are afraid of ruining their legacy with a new album, they should do what Wire did: release an EP or two, see what the reaction is. If it's hot, then maybe expand it into an album.

No offense, but I think your "headline," or subject line, is misleading.

Here, KD only seems to be expressing a fairly common sentiment. One could just as readily say that she's telling us that, unless they produce something that surpasses our expectations, we'll feel iffy about it. I don't see her dousing out any fires at all. It pretty much seems up to FB anyway, though the new record's recording process would---and probably will be---more democratic.

Come on, of course they're going to release a record. A year ago, it was a tour we were debating. And you know how that turned out. Same will prove true for an album---mark my words.

A great comeback record can be made, and people DO still get excited, although on a minor scale. But Pixies were never Billboard Top 10 anyway---rather, they just continue to sell. Look at Television, coming back after a hiatus. Look at Wire, again after a ten year hiatus: a record that was commercially and critically successful. Etc.
