Money quote: "It's sort of a macho thing. Are you going to be a musician or are you going to be a musician? Just do it. Be a part of this club or not. Some people are members of the club because they just stepped into it and they're beloved by millions of people all over the world, and other people have to hammer out a niche for themselves and win over their fans, literally, one by one, until their career is sustainable. Whatever. They're both in the club." |

It's interesting to me that everyone always assumes that Frank just put the hammer down on The Catholics against their collective will.
I realize that he is the leader of that band and calls most – if not all – of the shots (he's made it clear in prior interviews that he believes that's one of the reasons the group has lasted so long and functions so well - because there's no misunderstanding regarding authority or clout), but having been in my share of intense rock bands, I would not be surprised to find that the other members of the group are enjoying their time away from Frank, the road, and those particular songs.
i talked to Dave McCaffrey about this and he said that on one hand he misses being on the road, but that he does not miss Frank's gas.

I dunno Mr. Boobie... the way I took that quote is it wasn't about the money, but about the commitment that a true artist must make to his craft regardless of how big or small they are.
Sorry... wasn't referring to financial matters when I called that a "money quote." Just pointing out--in failed hepster language--what I though was a good quote. |

Thanks for posting that. However, this part is not so very pretty:
What's the status of The Catholics at this point? FB:They're on sabbatical. (laughs) The last time I said that, the band was on sabbatical for 12 years.
Ow. My poor little heart.

They may have been blindsided by the decision, we'll probably never know for sure, but just because things come out of nowhere doesn't mean they aren't in some way welcome.
I think it would be interesting if The Catholics made a "solo record" and toured on their own without Frank, like Crazy Horse did when Neil Young sacked them unexpectedly in the '70s to do other types of projects.
They could each contribute original songs, and in concert, they could swap off singing some of Frank's tunes.
This might piss him off, or make him chuckle with pride.
Either way, I bet a lot of folks would pay $6 to see that show in a club.

I really liked this quote:
"Interestingly enough, that's what makes a lot of people boring, I think. They don't try hard enough to be themselves. That's why you've got all of this bland music out there--all of these people trying to sound like some soulless diva or some soulless rock guy. They're not letting their real personality--or maybe even their physique--shine through." ... Right on! |
