Posted - 08/09/2004 : 03:48:36 Nothing groundbreaking but BBC 6 Music have just had a news article that the Pixies will be definitely be recording a new album next year, and Frank wants Tom Waits to produce as he "likes the sound of his records"
Nothing new, or amazing, but at least (reasonably) confirmed news

FRANK BLACK has warned that fans expecting a new PIXIES album might have to wait a little longer than they expected.
Fans have gone into overdrive since a band insider let slip to the New York Times last month that the reformed heroes would put out an album of all-new material in 2005, with Pixies even naming Tom Waits as a potential producer, what Black quoted as saying: "I like the way his records sound."
But now, Black has told the Associated Press that neither fans – nor former record label 4AD – should hold their breath: "Record companies, schmecord companies – who needs ‘em? That’s not where the money is. The business is with the real customers – the fans. That’s who we’re trying to connect with.
"In terms of getting a relationship with a company going, we don’t have any need, because we don’t have anything for them to sell. If and when we do have something, we’re probably going to proceed a little cautiously.
"At the end of the day, the record company always needs content. They need artists. Right now, they need artists more than we need them."
Pixies recently released their first new song in 13 years, ‘Bam Thwok’, as a download through the iTunes site.

Posted - 08/18/2004 : 18:30:26 I'd like to see that happen. Just as long as the album gets to all the fans who want it. I haven't had too much trouble finding FB&TC albums, but I can imagine there are some places the albums wouldn't get to without a record company behind them. Or am I wrong. Hopefully. And what if they did start their own record company. That would be fucked up. And every last kid with a band (myself included, well, I'm 24. not so much a kid) would want to get on that label. That'd be a funny event. |

Posted - 08/18/2004 : 09:28:23 i think they'll just do as frank does and license out the albums to distributors. makes sense and they've certainly got the profile and pulling power to be able to pull it off pretty easily.
and good on 'em i say.

This is true, of course. But from the "who needs 'em?" comment, it sounds like they might be planning something entirely different. Pixies aren't afraid of breaking new ground. It would appear that this ethos extends beyond the music itself.

Posted - 08/17/2004 : 09:41:49 I don't imagine they'd go with 4ad, considering how the label was so seemingly dismissive of FB's initial sojurn into being a solo artist. I seem to remember FB and 4ad parting on less than amicable terms, which is understandable---given the relative lack of publicity and support Teenager was given. Not sure what's going on with 4ad these days anyway; I lost track when they lost a lot of the luminaries from their roster: Cocteau Twins, Wolfgang Press, Pixies, Frank Black---I pretty much abandoned ship at that point.
They can pick any damn label they want, I'm sure. It wouldn't be difficult. |

As long as Black knows that there are plenty of fans desparate to hear some new Pixies material (in whatever format), then all is good. Saying that, I'd miss the sound quality and the artwork if they went the "download only" route... |

He told Associated Press that people expecting them to sign up with 4AD again, or ink a new deal with a major label, will be disappointed.

Posted - 08/14/2004 : 23:40:02 The Waits buzz is in a bunch of different places here, at pix.com & elsewhere, I believe it started here a while back with an unconfirmed quote from Frank's brother in Hyanis Port. The definitive word (also everywhere) is that they have no plans beyond "six months to a year", in spite of which there are hundreds of New Album articles out there. I'm doing my best to start a rumor Don Van Vliet is collaborating. I need help, it hasn't worked so far as far as I know. Maybe they were going to do it anyway. And that Mitsubishi is buying Stonehenge. |

If he really has stated this as a definite intention, it's surprizing that there has'nt been more discussion about it...he's obviously just musing about it a bit, though(would Waits really bother if they actually asked him to produce it?) |

Posted - 08/13/2004 : 20:41:13 they should make a new record a double cd but only sell it on the internet FUCK THE EVIL RECORD COMPANYS if they press the cds themselves for about one dollar a pop then post them to the fans for around 20 or 30$ it would be pure profit |

this seems to cast doubt on their future plans, but it is CNN so who knows.

Posted - 08/09/2004 : 12:29:52 What a fucking joke! Here's the quote from Frank: "'I have thought of that concept, yes," Mr. Black said. 'I wouldn't mind asking Tom Waits to produce us. Why not? I like the way his records sound.'"
It says nothing about definitive plans for recording a new album, it only says he's thought about it.

So Frank saying "I have thought of that concept, yes" is the same as a definite? Not in my book. |
