FIRST EVER DOWNLOAD CHART LAUNCHES

The Official Chart Company has announced details of the first ever download chart.

Launching on September 1, the chart hopes to capitalise on the huge success of downloading across the UK in the wake of the launch of legal download services this year.

The company has signed a two year deal with ‘Coca-Cola’, and the chart will collate data from all the biggest legal music download sites in the UK including www.mycokemusic.com, Napster and iTunes.

Peter Jamieson, BPI Chairman said: "Accessing music through legal downloading is a major part of the future of music and should be represented with its own chart.

"The launch of the Official Download Chart this September demonstrates the growing maturity of the legal download market in the UK."

The first test chart is topped this week by the Pixies' 'Bam Thwok', a track made available exclusively through iTunes.

I hope iTunes slaughters Napster - they seem to want £9 a month for a subscription + 99p per track

Excuse me, I'll go and get the album from my record store - they tend not to charge me just to walk through the door!!

iTunes is a great thing. And I do hope that they continue to expand their database. Bunch of tunes out there that I wouldn't mind paying 99 cents for.

iTunes was slow on indies in US as well, and then they grew (and appear to keep growing). I would assume the same will happen in Europe.

ps It is a hideous additiction. Your mood is down at work, and then you just add 1 more album (what to speak of seeing 50 different co-workers shared music lists that inspire you to spend more money).

if that is so then it means iTunes is already outperforming all other download sites put together, so please, Apple, get the indies in on it.
