I don't think I said standing in line (physically) anywhere, though maybe that's implied by the "wait for Ticketmaster sales to open". I was talking about the online service and tickets being made available.

I'm sure you're right that there are scalpers with enough savvy to keep an eye on forums such as ours and PixiesMusic, but I suspect that at least some (probably more than not) of them just keep an eye on Ticketmaster or whoever is selling them officially and snatch them as they see them. The "big" ones are probably going to get their tickets no matter where they are sold first, presale or no.

This is where you're so, so wrong. Scalpers are smart. This is big business, and trust me, they know what they're doing. They're getting online and they're buying up prime seats through the pixiesmusic.com pre-sale. Trust me.

Sending people -- they're called "diggers" in scalper parlance -- to stand in line at Ticketmaster outlets is the single least efficient way of getting tickets. In fact, if you read the New York attorney general's report on ticket scalping (http://www.oag.state.ny.us/press/reports/scalping/full_text.html), you'll find that sending "diggers" to stand in line at TM outlets is usually a diversionary tactic to conceal the real method that scalpers get tickets -- by cutting deals directly with promoters and venues, or using high-speed computer access.

Actually, a good way to sab the touts is only announce the tix on the boards..that way people who frequent the *community* benefit.

Right now, it seems to me that anyone can sign up to the newsletter, and bwammo, they get a nice email telling them when and where to go and take advantage of the system...

How about posting it on the boards for the first day or two, then posting it on the front of your site and sending out an email..?

Just an idea, thanks again for providing this opportunity. =)

PacoPaco, I have three degrees.

Business Management
English
ECONOMICS

Economics doesnt have anything to do with this. You have quite a skewed view on things, do you work for the government by any chance? Next you'll want people to bid at the pump on gas prices, and at the grocery store for milk.
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 05/12/2004 : 07:37:40
Right, I'm sure you'll see a chorus of people chiming in saying, "Please! No more advance ticket sales! Ticketmaster, raise you prices!! It's our only hope."

That's not to say you're not right, when demand is that much higher than supply, then people will be willing to pay more. But then it all comes down to only the wealthy being able to see shows eventually, or maybe regular folk only being able to afford a show or two a year. And I hardly see how that's levelling the playing field. I would think someone would appreciate:

a) The band trying not to gouge their fans for every cent they can get.
b) A fan site trying to provide a means of preventing scalpers (many of which know little to nothing of music and simply wait for the Ticketmaster sales to open).

What is the deal with this. Can anyone just go to the website, or do you have to be a site member?

Do you really think scalpers don't know about pre-sales? Please. Let's see. What would I do if I were a scalper? I'd say, 'You know, the Pixies are coming to my town, and it's gonna be a hot ticket.' So then I'd type the word "Pixies" into Google, I'd get a link to pixiesmusic.com and cruise over there and find out about the pre-sale. Boy that was hard. I mean, most pre-sales at least TRY to weed out scalpers by using passwords (not that such measures actually work). The Pixies pre-sales don't even use that.

Wanna know how to get rid of scalpers? Raise your ticket prices. If you know anything about economics, you'd know that scalpers exist for a reason -- because ticket prices are too low. People are willing to pay more for the convenience of having someone else go through the trouble of getting the tickets for them. It's brilliant, actually. It's free-market economics at work. If Ticketmaster jacked up its prices, or used auction-style bidding for all its seats, you'd see scalpers, for the most part, go away.

madtempest Posted - 05/12/2004 : 06:55:56
that wouldnt work, because if you did that, the touts/scalpers would sit there waiting for it all to go on sale. They all have multiple accounts, multiple credit cards, all set to go at the same time with the max number of tickets purchased, all to get as many tickets as possible right as they go on sale. they will get the good majority of the best seats available for sale, and the "true fan" or the rich fan are the ones who benefit the most: by buying tickets at an inflated price.

At least with this system, the devoted fans, the ones who are part of the fan "community" are the ones who benefit the most.

Are the pre-sale tickets the BEST tickets available? Maybe not, I honestly do not know for certain. But as a fan, my thinking is, if I can almost guarantee myself tickets before they go on sale to the general public, isn't that a good thing for me, especially when a lot of these shows are selling out in an hour or so?

If you believe it to be a scam, fine, that is your opinion, so don't buy into the system, and don't buy tickets.

Sure you can. Put all tickets on sale at once.

On David Bowie's site, members were offered a pre-sale for practically every show on the last tour. Probably one of the only benefits of being a member of BowieNet.

It helps beat touts, too, if tickets are being offered directly to fans.

Quit yer whining lad. All sales involve marketing. No matter how you sell something of limited availability, somebody somewhere, no matter how dedicated a follower, will be hard done by. Saying that it's unfair to make some tickets available on the Internet when other folks don't use it is utter hogwash. Some people don't read the music press at all and yet are dedicated Pixies fans. They'll probably find out that their favorite band reformed some time after all tickets are sold.

You cannot level the playing field for everybody, its just not possible. That being the case, it is a good thing that small amounts of tickets are given advance availability to specialist channels like Internet sites, fan clubs and music shows. It increases the chance that those who participate in activities involving the band (no matter how much these activities are derided by certain other fans) will get a shot at seeing the band.

You're here. Your disconnected buddies aint. You know what to do. Buy them a bloody ticket, and they'll pay you for them later and be grateful.

I totally disagree. Presales are totally bogus. You're basically saying that a certain class of "fans" (those who know about Pixies' fan sites like pixiesmusic.com and this one) should get first dibs on tickets. This is blatantly unfair. And it really doesn't put the fans first, anyway. It just puts certain, Internet-saavy fans first. Believe me, I gotta couple friends who are as big, and probably bigger, Pixies fans than anyone on this board. But they don't waste time trolling fan sites like this one, so they didn't know about the pre-sale. Why were they less deserving than you?

Face it, tickets -- ALL TICKETS -- should go on sale at the exact same time for everybody. Believe me, some big-time arena and amphitheatre shows are ridiculous. Sometimes they have three separate pre-sales (I'm not kidding) before the "general public" gets to buy. It's all a scam.

I'll agree with CoF, too. Anything that tells scalpers to sit on their thumbs and spin is wonderful in my book. Even though this board did a wonderful job of making sure as many of us got to these warm-up shows as possible (myself included, I wouldn't have gotten into the FineLine without it) I read too many stories about fellow forumers who just barely missed the boat. Some didn't get tickets at all. Some paid an arm and a leg. Some did both by buying bad tickets. Anybody willing to do any kind of presale is a godsend. Complaining about the kind of seats, for a diehard fan like myself or many others, would be the equivalent of being tossed a lifeboat while in the middle of the ocean and then complaining about not enough leg room. I'm not calling you a whiner or anything, LikeJellyrollSculpture. I'm just tryin' to throw my perspective into the mix. I agree that it'd be great to get great seats for us at frankblack.net/pixiesmusic.com, but we'll take what we can get, I guess.
Daisy Girl Posted - 05/08/2004 : 11:51:51
I agree, Frank.

Actually I am clueless about this feature... can you please fill me in Jelly??? Thanks!!!!

You know what would also be cool... if they could rope off a Pixies fan area in front of the stage for the GA shows...it would be prefered seating for the fans. It could include FB and pixiesmusic.com members. Even if it were for the first couple of songs that would rock.
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 05/08/2004 : 09:02:25
I can't answer that, but I think any attempt to get fans tickets before the general public is an honourable plan even if that were the case. Might just be that you got there late. I don't know why they'd only get the lower area to presell...
