This is very nice: http://midwestaxn.com/music/surfer-blood-the-midwest-action-interview/

I always thought the gold top was a guitar of Kim's.

It’s a wonder any of us are still standing right now. So, you guys toured with the Pixies right? I read some of the story online, you just met them at an airport one day?

We did actually, we were in Australia doing a festival and then flying to Japan when we met Frank Black and Kim Deal. They seemed like really nice people. They had heard us because they broadcast the festivals in Australia over the national radio station, so on his way to the festival he listened to our entire set.

So it was a real surprise for him to know who we were. We expressed that we were big fans and sure enough they invited us along to come on tour for a few weeks. It was amazing, we got treated like royalty and got to watch them play Dolittle every night.

That seems like a great fit, you guys have a Pixies-esque style to you, I can see the influence.

When we did that tour we didn’t know that we would end up doing our record with Gil Norton (who produced Dolittle). So it ended up being pretty cool that we did that tour because we ended up doing our record with Gil. It all came full circle.

We ended up borrowing some of the Pixies gear. Joey lent us his Marshall and his goldtop Les Paul which we used all over the record. It definitely broke the ice that we toured with them, I don’t know if we would’ve been able to borrow that stuff for so long if we hadn’t.

Yes, that's what's in the book. Fixing a broken neck is expensive though not uncommon

Also, there's an extra switch between the two neck pickup's knobs. Exact same things on the Breeders goldtop... (see http://youtu.be/CuOYrYpAvd0?t=5m50s @5:50...).

Only difference: the missing bridge volume knob has now been replaced.

Maybe it was repaired? I dunno. I know that Mr. John Murphy claims he accidentally smashed it and Kim was pissed.

Yeah, I read that too. However to certain point guitars can be fixed

That's the original Joey gold top !

It has aged a lot, but you can still recognize the exact same 2 markings near the neck pickup (one of them is probably where one of the pickguard screw used to be).

I made a comment in Breeders video about that interrrrrresting fact but obviously no one cares !

I don't think that's the same goldtop. In the book, Oral History of the Pixies, Mr. John Murphy stated that he accidentally smashed Kim's original goldtop during a Mente show.

Funny, that's probably my favourite Pixies video... ever. Could watch it all day.

And I think Kim sloppy (that's true...) bass perfectly fits the whole thing...! Amazing alchemy here.

I get a kick out of that video watching Kim with her mom hairdo.

That was very cool of Mr. S. One for the grandkids... "Yeah, Joey Santiago lent us his gear for the album!"

Thanks, come to think of it, I saw the Breeders last year and I believe the gold top was there too.

Kim originally loaned her gold-top to Joey, until the Pixies started to make some money then Joey acquired his own gold-top. I believe Kim still has a gold-top but it's not the original she loaned to Joey.
