A very interesting read, I get the impression (and hope) he has not been misquoted in this interview.

i doubt the new songs will become cult. they're too mainstream and we're way past that point for the band. EP2 (and to some extent 1) are a lot of fun and i like the continuation of the band's sound, but college kids wont be discovering these in the same way as doolittle 10 years from now.
Bands becoming cult because college kids discover them? That's the strangest definition of cult I've ever heard.
These songs will become cult if they stick with the Pixies fan; what I mean is, if in 5 years time fans play them with same anticipation they play something like Motorway to Roswell or The Happening now, or cherish them like heirlooms and pass on their exuberance for them through word of mouth, covering them on their guitars or talking about them with passion on forums like this. Much time is needed before that one is answered but the fact that the EPs have been greeted a bit 'meh' by the likes of Pitchfork only increases the chances of them maturing in a culty way irrespective of whether the song quality has gone down. |
