Posted - 11/29/2013 : 13:26:32 The cgi is the only thing that makes the heart sink a bit, wish they'd left it out or done something different. Otherwise I love it. |

Posted - 11/29/2013 : 00:39:16 i'm loving it! it cracks me up every time! BRILLIANT!
from the pixies website...
The video for "What Goes Boom" was directed by Jonathan Furmanski and Matthew Galkin. Here's what they have to say about it : "Our original vision for the 'What Goes Boom' video was to create an homage to a central, dramatic scene in Star Wars. But, after that idea proved a bit too costly to produce, we decided the next best thing was to blow up Joey Santiago in the desert – the compromises we make for our art." Enjoy! PIXIES

The only "flub" in the video (and I'm surprised they let this go considering the detail paid to the rest of it), is that when Joey 3 explodes, the CGI blood spatters all over a rock formation over his left shoulder, yet when the scene cuts to the wide shot, there is no blood or stain on that rock -- which there clearly should be.

Other than that, I think it's great, and actually I find it the most interesting of all the promo videos from EP-1...

Posted - 11/20/2013 : 22:01:54 I thought that the other two blood stains were other members of the band who had already walked out and gone boom. And for whatever reason I view the figure at the end to be Black Francis walking towards that same fate that already greeted his bandmates. |

Posted - 11/20/2013 : 11:42:04 Well, the splotches are not all in the same place. So I am hoping one day he doesn't blow up and just keeps walking. It could take a while, though.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. And again and again and again and again and again, and maybe again and again.

Posted - 11/20/2013 : 08:13:09 i thought it was a really dull video until i realized the loop of it all... those two other splotches make all the difference! |
peter radiator |
Posted - 11/20/2013 : 07:31:57 He's doomed to repeat the loop (perhaps for eternity).
Two splotches when the video begins, three after the first Joey we see is decimated, surely a fourth after the "next" Joey we see meets the same fate, ad infinitum...
Maybe that's why Joey has been a bit catty and caustic in recent interviews. He's sick and tired of being blown up.

Posted - 11/19/2013 : 23:44:02 Video is the best one so far. Kinda like a surreal outerspace nightmare. Kinda like the Pixies. Now Kim needs to get over her pissyness and rejoin to make them completely dysfunctional and teetering on the edge. |

Posted - 11/19/2013 : 18:40:16 i'm glad they did something strange. it reminds me of velouria too a bit, just for sheer minimalism.
i wish the effects were better too but what are you going to do? it's pretty funny
that screengrab of Joey is pretty epic

Posted - 11/19/2013 : 13:43:07 There are three obvious splotches, after Joey explodes, and someone walking in from the same route as he seemed to at the top of the video.
Hmm...

Posted - 11/19/2013 : 11:54:47 That's such a fucking great video, and totally in line with the vibe of many of the band's earlier promos (pre-Reunion).
I really wish they'd had the budget for practical blood effects as opposed to the not-so-hot CGI used, but overall, I can actually see myself watching that over and over again, just for the beautiful landscapes and the great detail on display.
It's MOON meets TOTAL RECALL meets PIXIES.
