123 Pleasant St. will host a benefit show for the American Red Cross this Saturday.
The theme? A tribute to '80s alt-rock pioneers, the Pixies. Once again, a cavalcade of Morgantown bands will participate in the show.
The list posted several weeks ago on flyers around town include Billy Matheny, Librarians, Mark Miller, Straka, The Ones That Got Away, Sandra Black, Rockets to Russia, Sugarcamp, American Sound Syndicate and more.
Depresbyterians will start the night with a few selected covers. The rest of the acts will follow suit, picking their favorites -- or, of course, the most obscure -- Pixies' songs.
According to a MySpace bulletin posted by J. Marinelli, his covers will include ''Wave of Mutilation,'' a track from 1989 hit ''Doolittle.''
Marinelli's set will be immediately followed by The Emergency, who will be playing ''Monkey Gone to Heaven.'' Aaron Crothers noted that the band may have some special guests on stage with it during its set.
''I'm really glad this band was chosen for the benefit,'' Crothers said. ''I think most of the music scene in this town was into the Pixies at some point, and I'm excited to see what Morgantown's scene can do with these songs.''
David Bello and His God-Given Right will also be performing a couple songs including ''Hey'' toward the end of the night.
Fronted by Black Francis, the Pixies were a largely influential rock band of the past 20 years. The song ''Debaser,'' written about a 1929 surrealist film by Salvador Dali, is often considered the Pixies' most highly regarded song.
The show starts at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross.
