<<Tribute Albums In The Works For Both The Pixies And Kim Deal Monday January 22, 2007 @ 05:00 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
The Pixies have been under the radar in recent months as they ponder whether or not to record a new studio album, but they're the subject of a new tribute record that will be issued by American Laundromat Records this fall.
Dig For Fire: A Tribute To Pixies will feature 16 tracks from a rather impressive lineup of acts, including Mogwai, They Might Be Giants, OK Go, Dinosaur Jr. and J. Mascis. No track list has been announced yet, but other artists involved include Dylan In The Movies, The Rosebuds, Morning Theft, Joy Zipper, The Commons and Beth Waters.
The label isn't stopping there, as it also plans to release an album devoted to Pixies bassist Kim Deal.
"Between Kim's work in the Pixies, Breeders and The Amps, there's well over 50 tracks up for consideration," reads a statement on the MySpace page devoted to Gigantic — A Tribute To Kim Deal. "Everything from 'Gigantic' and 'Oh' to 'Divine Hammer' and 'Cannonball' to 'Little Fury' and 'Pacer' — there's enough cool tracks here for three tributes. However, we're only going to do one."
The MySpace page also has a clip of "Divine Hammer" performed by Julie Peel. Other artists confirmed for this tribute are Bishop Allen, The German Art Students, The Douglas Fir, Elmo, Francine, Witch Hats and The Modifiers. Like The Pixies tribute, Gigantic is expected to be released sometime in the fall.
American Laundromat have issued several tribute albums in the past, including the High School Reunion compilation that featured Matthew Sweet, Frank Black, Kristin Hersh and The Dresden Dolls covering songs found in popular '80s films such as The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink and Fast Times At Ridgemont High. An all-female tribute to Neil Young titled Cinnamon Girl, which will focus on his material from 1969 to 1979, is also in the works for the fall.
The Pixies toured Europe last summer after co-headlining a North American tour with Weezer in the summer of 2005 that included Canadian stops in Montreal and Toronto.

At that show, we saw you cover Pixies (‘Nimrod's Son’) – are they an influence? Or is that a song that you just think fits what you do particularly well? The Pixies are a fairly strong influence on us. Specifically we're impressed with the way they structure songs and the way the parts in the songs respond to each other. They’re an energetic band with an unconventional muse and that’s always exciting to see. They may have been one of the bands that made me, in particular, want to play music with other people, as the roles they play fit so excitingly into each other. So yeah, they're an influence beyond ‘Nimrod's Son’ .

American Laundromat To Release Pixies Tribute 2007-05-03 14:03:51.880, Story by: Rachael Darmanin
American Laundromat has teamed with PixiesMusic.com to release Dig For Fire, a collection of Pixies tunes covered by the likes of They Might Be Giants, OK Go, Mogwai and more, out November 13. Exclusive limited- edition first pressing and seven-inch split vinyl with bonus tracks are available as part of a pre-order offer that will be announced in the next few weeks.
All the covers were recorded specifically for Dig For Fire, including a track from Morning Theft, an unsigned band out of New York, who were asked to be part of the collection after the label heard a live show of theirs on eMusic.com. Frontman Rob Holmes says that they were able to pick which Pixies song they wanted to cover, but are not at liberty to reveal it. Each week the label will announce one track from the album on their MySpace page, with the Rosebuds ("Break My Body"), Mogwai ("Gouge Away"), They Might Be Giants ("Havalina") and British Sea Power ("Caribou") already confirmed.
"It's quite an honor to go from listening to Pixies songs in my bedroom as a teenager to now being part of an official compilation," says Holmes. "It's mind-blowing. We're really honored to be part of it."

Bands Drop Skinny on Pixies Tribute
April 12, 2007
Rosebuds, They Might Be Giants give SPIN.com the lowdown on their contributions to this fall's Dig for Fire.
They Might Be Giants and the Rosebuds are among artists interpreting Pixies tunes on Dig for Fire: A Pixies Tribute, slated to hit store shelves November 13 via indie imprint American Laundromat. Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis, Mogwai, British Sea Power, and OK Go have also chosen yet- to-be revealed tracks to be translated for the project. Since the label has yet to release a tracklisting for the album, SPIN.com caught up with a few of the contributing acts to uncover which songs were selected and why.
Ivan Howard, the male half of North Carolina-based indie rock duo the Rosebuds, revealed to SPIN.com that they will cover "Break my Body" from the Pixies' 1988 album, Surfer Rosa. "When we were approached about doing the covers album, I thought about what we would want to sing, and I always ended up singing that guitar lead!" Howard told SPIN.com. "Also the girl/boy vocals in the chorus are great. When we started looking closer at the words and arrangement it tuned out the words are really sexy so it gave us other options of how the song could be sung and recorded. Now Kelly [Crisp] and I are fighting over who gets to sing lead."
Geeky, child-educating rockers They Might Be Giants, meanwhile, have selected "Havalina," a tune from 1990's sonic departure Bossanova. "'Havalina' is an example of a kind of Pixies song that seems underappreciated, and there was some elbow room for interpretation in covering it," the band's John Flansburgh told SPIN.com
The Pixies' Frank Black

Open Letter to Frank Black
We were asked to cover The Pixies' "Break My Body" for an upcoming tribute record. It seems natural that Ivan would sing it since it's Frank singing lead on the original, but I think I should sing it! If Ivan sings "Break my body, hold my bones," it's one thing. But I think if I sing it... The bottom line is: This is a woman's song!
Okay, open letter to Frank Black:
Frank, Do you think it is possible that you wrote this song for a woman? "I'm a belly dancer" isn't even the only thing I'm talking about here. Frank, just let me know if you don't want me to sing it. No, don't do that. I really want to do it. Or try it at least. If it sounds horrible, I'll let Ivan sing it after all. And also, do you eat sushi? I want to take you out to dinner. Or you take me out to dinner because there's a good place called Waraji here in Raleigh. But they have other stuff too if you don't eat sushi. Love, Kelly

when i started thinking about bands i wanted on this pixies tribute, mogwai almost immediately came to mind, as i know they are huge pixies fans. i emailed stuart, asking him if they'd be interested. keep in mind, they were pretty much the first band i approached for this project, and i still had no idea if bands i liked would even want to cover pixies tracks at this point. stuart replied with a big yes, and said they wanted to do 'gouge away'.

The second tribute album is called Gigantic: A Tribute To Kim Deals and is dedicated entirely to songs written by Kim Deal, which I'm sure Frank Black must just looooooooove.

Black also released Fastman.Raiderman last year and toured North America in support of it. Dig For Fire: A Tribute To Pixies featuring Mogwai, They Might Be Giants, Dinosaur Jr., OK Go and others is in the works. Black's Pixies bandmate, Kim Deal, will also have an album in her honour: Gigantic — A Tribute To Kim Deal.

Yeah, but how can we? Our fearless forum owners have gone AWOL!
We have a forum full of talented artists, but are powerless to do anything about it.
Better yet, we put together a new forum FB tribute album and have a Tribute-off with the commercial one. Steven Colbert could host it.
