Posted - 10/24/2006 : 14:51:13 Ideally, Albini for me. Especially after his work with McLusky showed that he can still cut modern, relevant punk music. Realistically, I appreciate this ain't ginna happen.
Gil Norton has to be in contention as the relationship was so strong. I reckon my fantasy Pixies producer would be Jacknife Lee (formerly of 90s punk legends Compulsion) as his work with U2, Kasabian & Editors was so raw. Some might allude to silk purses and sows' ears with the former two bands but hey...
What do you think? Maybe FB will read this and get some ideas. |

Posted - 11/04/2006 : 10:25:56 Just heard a radio interview with Frank last night and he was quite vocal about wanting to do another Pixies album, and of course, the circumstances under which it would or would not be recorded (i.e. Kim's hesitations, etc.). But he also talked about wanting Tom Waits still, and how that would make it the kind of album it needed to be. He seemed to make a very good case for it, but wasn't sure whether or not Waits even sat in the producers chair. So I'm still sitting in the Waits camp.

As far as I know, Ken Thomas produced Ágćtis byrjun, an album for which you have previously expressed appreciation.
I love the production on that album. The drum sounds on Track 5 (I'm too lazy to write the name of the song, because then I would have to cut and paste letters with accent marks) are among the greatest in the history of recorded music. Very dark and ominous drums - the compression almost makes it sound as though the bass and snare are attacking each other. |

Anyway, I say Ken Thomas. What do you think, Cheeseman1000? How 'bout Ken Thomas? |

Posted - 10/27/2006 : 22:12:13 Nick Vincent would be amazing. EDF would be interesting, but I tend to think he puts his imprint on things too heavy-handedly. (Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.)
In my dreams, the producer would be Albini. Hopefully it will at least be someone with a similar "get out of the way and just get it on tape" philosophy. At this point I think that Frank, Joey, Kim, and Dave know what to do in the studio.
Really, though, I'm just holding out hope that anyone but Gil Norton will produce. No balls in his sound. Luckily the tunes are great enough to overcome the flat, lifeless production on Doolittle, Trompe, and Bossanova. The BBC recordings sound better. The Albini stuff kills it. Even the purple tape stuff has more umph.

Posted - 10/27/2006 : 15:15:16 Phil Spector. He produced Starsailor--why not!? Plus, Albini has sort of a similar production philosophy, or so it seems to me from what I've heard. Burt Bacharach would be interesting, as well. Seriously.

Posted - 10/26/2006 : 16:50:58 I think Tiven could do a good Pixies production. I would go with Nick Vincent, I love his production on Pistelero, it could work for pixies as well. Ric Ocasek did some very nice things, but maybe they should do it themselves. With Jack Joseph-Puig at the mixing desk
