Gerard Way A Huge Pixies Fan
My Chemical Romance singer wants to work with Frank Black.

By Krista Desens

MYRTLE BEACH, SC Tuesday Nov.29.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Gerard Way recently sat down for an online interview with AOL Music where he talked about some of his musical influences including the Pixies.

The My Chemical Romance frontman answered questions from a computer at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where the band was performing a show.

During the chat, Way said he is "a huge Pixies fan," and said he'd like to collaborate with Pixies frontman Frank Black.

"I would love to work with Frank Black...probably more so than two of my other idols, Tom Waits or Morrissey," said Way. "But I think working with Frank would be the most interesting."

Way continued, "Frank Black is actually a big lyrical and vocal delivery influence [on me]."

He added, "I would like to cover 'Mr. Grieves' by the Pixies."

MelissaInMusic: hey there
mcrsgerard: age/sex check?
MelissaInMusic: lol 28/f. you?
mcrsgerard: 48/m, truckdriver
MelissaInMusic: nice!
MelissaInMusic: hey gerard - thanks for taking the time to talk to us today!
MelissaInMusic: where are you at right now as you AIM with us?
mcrsgerard: no problem at all
mcrsgerard: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
MelissaInMusic: what are you doing down there?
mcrsgerard: In a backstage office, smoking cigarettes
MelissaInMusic: got a show tonite?
MelissaInMusic: what's your brand of choice -- i wonder if i can even ask that.
mcrsgerard: Oh...yeah ...my bad...at the House of Blues down here
mcrsgerard: Marlboro...but smoking is bad!
MelissaInMusic: quite. i've quit several times
mcrsgerard: Its all Ive got left
MelissaInMusic: so are you ever going to STOP touring?
mcrsgerard: Hmmmm
mcrsgerard: Yes
MelissaInMusic: not forever of course :D
mcrsgerard: December 18th...in Australia
MelissaInMusic: it's been what, two years now?
mcrsgerard: Then we go and make the next record
mcrsgerard: Yeah 2 years...if you don't count taking off to make the record, which really wasnt a break, but we were stationary...3 and a half
MelissaInMusic: do you even remember what home looks like at this point?
mcrsgerard: I do now...but there was a time, when we would go from tours into other ones without stopping, that I forgot what my parents house looked like
mcrsgerard: It was creepy coming home
MelissaInMusic: and home is jersey, of course.
mcrsgerard: Yes....for my parents...but I recently moved to Queens
MelissaInMusic: what's the craziest experience you've had on your marathon touring?
mcrsgerard: Meeting Glenn Danzig
mcrsgerard: It was life changing...and before I met him...he put "Astro Zombies" out to us
MelissaInMusic: that's my next question!
MelissaInMusic: your cover of the Misfits 'astro zombies' is on the soundtrack to the new Tony Hawk game. how'd you get involved with that?
mcrsgerard: We've never really done a proper recorded cover....we turned down a lot of tribute records...but the tony hawk thing came around and it seemed like a great idea...we of course picked the Misfits, being from NJ, and our favorite band. We were surprised no one had picked them yet
MelissaInMusic: def. they're icons to so many artists
mcrsgerard: Picking the right song was hard
mcrsgerard: yeah....
MelissaInMusic: danzig has to be a little intimidating in person though
mcrsgerard: I was intimidated for sure...and very nervous...but he was one of the nicest dudes I ever met
MelissaInMusic: that's awesome to meet a hero and have him be everything you hoped he'd be
mcrsgerard: and we met Doyle as well...also very nice
mcrsgerard: Yeah...he was more than I hoped...we got to talk and it was just amazing
MelissaInMusic: any other artists you'd like to cover or work with? i know you're contributing to thursday's new CD
mcrsgerard: I would love to work with Frank Black...probably more so than two of my other idols, Tom Waits or Morrissey
mcrsgerard: But I think working with Frank would be the most interesting
mcrsgerard: And I would like to cover Mr. Grieves by the Pixies
MelissaInMusic: i wouldn't have guessed you were a big pixies fan.
MelissaInMusic: can we expect something along those lines for the next record?
MelissaInMusic: new songs you've started playing are already getting great fan response
mcrsgerard: I'm a huge Pixies fan...Frank Black is actually a big lyrical and vocal delivery influence....
mcrsgerard: I would expect lots of different things, mostly no two things sounding alike so far...lyrically dark but more social commentary than fiction
MelissaInMusic: so less "concept album" and more politics?
mcrsgerard: I think less politics...but more about living, growing up mundane...with no hope, growing old...more brutally honest...think "Different Class" meets "A Night at the Opera"...with machine guns
MelissaInMusic: always with machine guns!
MelissaInMusic: do you think your music fits the "emo" label? what's your opinion on that label?
mcrsgerard: we cant lose those...its like our trademark
MelissaInMusic: haha
MelissaInMusic: yes, and you have to keep having amazing album art
mcrsgerard: I dont think Emo ever fit us...even in the beginning...maybe geographically but at that time, when we would play VFW halls...we were always odd man out
MelissaInMusic: it seems like a convenient term for any music with feelings.
mcrsgerard: Yeah, pretty much...its just a buzzword to attach to a youth culture growth spurt
MelissaInMusic: so i know youve got to get going, but i've got a couple more questions for ya.
mcrsgerard: go ahead..this is a fun way to do an interview
MelissaInMusic: thanks!! glad you're into it.
mcrsgerard: hahahah np
MelissaInMusic: so you've risen to the heights of music stardom, but one thing you haven't yet aquired is a BEEF with anyone
MelissaInMusic: what do you think about bands like the killers and the bravery & fall out boy dissing one another in the press?
mcrsgerard: Oh I'm sure we have
MelissaInMusic: haha
mcrsgerard: We just don't pay attention to anyone
mcrsgerard: I've always thought beef was just a tool to sell records....there are people we dislike for sure...but we'll never talk about it...because we feel thats just a way to generate more press
MelissaInMusic: my chemical romance takes the high road!
mcrsgerard: we do with a lot of things....but its not always easy...
MelissaInMusic: i think that's got a lot to do with why your fans are so loyal -- you're just a bunch of genuine guys
mcrsgerard: I'm sure one day we will speak out on something or someone....but only when its needed
MelissaInMusic: well aolmusic.com would be honored if you let us be your soapbox.
mcrsgerard: hahahahah
MelissaInMusic: thanks so much gerard, we really appreciate you taking the time out today. any last thing you'd like to say before we sign off?
mcrsgerard: Hmmmm
MelissaInMusic: no pressure!
mcrsgerard: mainly...thanks to all of our fans for an amazing year...thank you for believing in us and making all of our dreams possible...
mcrsgerard: you can ask another question if you want...
MelissaInMusic: ok.. what video games are you playing at the moment?
mcrsgerard: World of Warcraft!
mcrsgerard: The entire band plays it
MelissaInMusic: nice!! i play too
MelissaInMusic: what kind of character are you?
mcrsgerard: are you serious?
MelissaInMusic: i'm dead serious
mcrsgerard: I'm an Undead Warrior
mcrsgerard: figures...
MelissaInMusic: haha you HAD to be undead
mcrsgerard: Yeah I'm predictable like that
MelissaInMusic: haha.. i might have thought priest though
mcrsgerard: I like Paladins though
mcrsgerard: Priests look kind of boring
MelissaInMusic: nah they're cool!
MelissaInMusic: you guys play while you're on the road?
mcrsgerard: Yeah all the time...for hours
MelissaInMusic: that's awesome. maybe i'll see you on there someday.
mcrsgerard: hahaha yeah we can hang out with Dave Chapelle
MelissaInMusic: LOL
mcrsgerard: hahahah
MelissaInMusic: ok well thanks again, and have a great show tonight!
mcrsgerard: ok thanks! You take care!
MelissaInMusic: you too - see ya!

To be honest, I've started liking their song 'I'm Not Okay'.

"The arc of triumph"

I know a guy who has the initials MCR so I never even gave this band the time of day. And if I had, I have a pretty good idea of what I would have thought.

"I love James Woods"

The Beets Are A Better Band Than My Chemical Romance.

Yeah, kudos for the influence, but he could use it more wisely.
At least he hasn't got a stupid feather in his hair.
