Posted - 07/24/2005 : 19:56:02 Interesting article here... but, god, Frank PLEASE don't make comparisons with yourself and bands that don't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence (you'll see what i mean!), jeez...
BLACK FEARS PIXIES COMEBACK ALBUM WILL BE A LONG TIME COMING THE PIXIES reunion might be short lived because leader FRANK BLACK insists he can't justify touring next year (06) without having new material to play.
The GIGANTIC rockers feel like they're under pressure to record a new album, but Black is keen to return to his solo career after teaming up with soul session stars STEVE CROPPER and SPOONER OLDHAM for his acclaimed new CD HONEYCOMB.
He also reports that bandmate KIM DEAL is keen to return to the studio with her rock group the BREEDERS and drummer DAVID LOVERING is planning to return to his side job as a magician - so Pixies fans will have a long wait before the group, which reformed last year (04), returns to the studio - if at all.
Black says, "We don't want to overstay our welcome. If we were gonna go on tour next summer, for example, we feel under a little pressure to record a record or something.
"We haven't booked a session or anything. I've never had this much attention put on me... I feel like I'm in OASIS or something, or some really hot band. Maybe I am, I don't know."
Meanwhile, Black hopes to follow up his new solo album by piecing together another supergroup for his next recording - he'll team up with former FACES star IAN McLAGAN and the BAND's LEVON HELM.

Posted - 08/28/2005 : 01:59:27 I admit that I would love to hear new material from them. But only if they think they can create honest, fresh material.
I find the 'lock them and their preexisting albums in a time capsule' view wacky. It seems to be a view based on fear that the music 'could' be bad.
I doubt Black/Pixies would release anything if they did not like it, and the worst that could happen then is that they like it but others don't.
Art without risk would create a lot of crap art. I hope they jump off the diving board again.

Fair enough, so long as they keep up their high standards.
They need to be honest with themselves and realise if this is not the case.

Posted - 08/07/2005 : 13:30:05 Yeah, it's cool your honest about that. And to be fair I think Frank was very adamant for a long while about not anything Pixie related. I guess when people keep bugging you for years about doing them particular songs you relent. When I saw David Byrne it made me cringe a bit when they did a couple TH songs. But on the same note, I was never able to see the Talking Heads so there was a little guilty pleasure going on, hornswoggle or not! |

Posted - 08/07/2005 : 13:20:30 I agree, and also when Frank and the Catholics started playing Pixies stuff at Catholics gigs... i think that was a bit of a shame aswell...even though truthfully i didn't object when i was actually at a Catholics gig. |

Posted - 08/07/2005 : 11:04:23 It would be sad if they turned into some touring novelty act, always playing the same stuff. They could definitely over stay their welcome. I'd like to think they all have a little more class than that. It's one reason I really respect a band like the clash, they had multiple opportunities to go for the big pay day reunion but they never did. Call me a bleeding heart purist or what not, but there is something to be said for people who keep moving forward. When you officialy end it than begin it again, it always seems like some kind of hornswaggle. My opinion anyway. |

Posted - 07/25/2005 : 17:33:04 I don't really care if a new Pixies record comes out or not, but it's interesting to see all of these tabloid-y headlines about "Frank Confirms New Pixies Album" right next to more thorough interview pieces (like the new Uncut interview) where Frank seems to say the opposite.
Like this bit from the above-mentioned Uncut article: -------------
What about a new (Pixies) album?
I don’t know. I don’t think so. We’d have to kind of reinvent ourselves or something if we were ever going to do that. And I don’t know if the demand is there, really. It has to be about more than commerce. To take a ten- or eleven- year sabbatical and it goes well, then it feels funny to go make a record to take advantage of this situation. Whatever box we were performing or writing within before, it’s really gotta break through all that and just be upside down. Kim has to be the lead vocalist or something, or Joey has to sing. Or it has to be all waltzes.

Posted - 07/25/2005 : 15:17:47 So a new record would be recorded/come out before next summer, presumably. That's how I read it, if they plan to tour next year.

Posted - 07/25/2005 : 12:37:35 ok I took this interview as yes we want to record someday... not just right now!
This quote cracked me up:

I confirm you're not. I'm glad the Pixies got rich and famous at last - they certainly deserve it - but that's enough now, it's time to come back to serious things..

There's no reason why Frank can't play solo shows whilst with the Pixies, to be honest. I'm just happy that he tours as often as he does. |

Posted - 07/25/2005 : 00:18:17 I think he should record new material, just because I like the experiments Frank has done in the studio over the years (live to two track, recording with legends in 4 days)

No you're not! I want to see a solo Frank gig again - in a small venue, amongst real fans with an unpredictable setlist.
