PIXIES TO MAKE FIRST ALBUM IN 14 YEARS

Reformed alt-rock legends PIXIES are planning to record their first album in 14 years.

The band’s frontman Black Francis has confirmed the band, who got back together last year to huge acclaim, are preparing to make their first studio album since 1991’s ’Trompe Le Monde’.

He told contactmusic: “It's all hugs and kisses, I'm pleased to report.

"We have been discussing recording a new album lately. As happy as we are with the success of the reunion tour, we really want to make a record for the right reasons, whether it is successful commercially or not."

He added: "We would be satisfied if it played like our other records, never chart-topping but always in print."

Since the band got back together they have recorded two songs - ’Bam Thwok’ - which was rejected for the ’Shrek 2’ soundtrack and then released as a download-only single, and a cover of Warren Zevon’s ’Ain’t That Pretty At All’, which appeared on ’Enjoy Every Sandwich’, a tribute album to the late singer.

Pixies headline this year’s Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals between August 27 and 29.

Black Francis releases a new solo album under the name Frank Black next week (July 18). ’Honeycomb’ is the first record he’s done alone since 1996’s ’The Cult Of Ray’.

More on New Pixies Album

Pixies frontman Frank Black has revealed more about his band's new album, the first since 1991’s Trompe Le Monde.

“We do discuss making a record in the most casual kind of way. We don’t want to overstay our welcome in terms of performing under the banner of a reunion. With the exception of Australia we’ve kind of played everywhere that we can play, so we’re thinking, gee, we enjoy being in a band together again. So even if we just get together once in a blue moon to play the old songs, how are we gonna do that without coming off as tacky? So I suppose one way to accomplish that is to work on some new material,” Black said.

“We haven’t jammed but I don’t really know what it would sound like. Joey (Santiago) told me not to worry about it, he said, ‘just write some songs and the Pixies will make it sound like the Pixies’,” he added.

Black recently released his new solo album Honeycomb.

Alternative Rock God's The Pixies Plan New Album

July 30, 2005 11:56 p.m. EST

Douglas Maher - All Headline News Staff Reporter

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Fans through the 1990s and certainly up to 2004 could not imagine alternative rockers The Pixies ever reuniting again, let alone recording a new album.

But that is what is about to happen.

"We gotta do something else if we're going to go out there and continue to make money," vocalist/guitarist Frank Black tells MTV. "I mean, we could keep doing it the way we're doing it,but it might at some point, we'll be overstaying our welcome, so to speak as the reunited band. We have to either stop being reunited and go back to our lives or do something vital and relevant."

Don't count on seeing a studio album until late 2006 Black says, bassist Kim Deal is set to do another reunion with The Breeders towards the end of 2005 and that would eat up a chunk of next year.

'Keep The Ball Rolling' brings you...

Singer FRANK BLACK is convinced his first album in 15 years with the PIXIES will be a success, even though he has yet to write any new songs.

The DEBASER hitmaker is delighted to be back with JOEY SANTIAGO, DAVID LOVERING and KIM DEAL onstage - but he is desperate not to tour again without writing new material.

Although Black is feeling the pressure, he knows his old bandmates will turn the songs he does write into a bona fide Pixies disc.

He says, "We do discuss making a record in the most casual kind of way.

"With the exception of Australia we've kind of played everywhere that we can play, so we're thinking, gee, we enjoy being in a band together again.

"So even if we just get together once in a blue moon to play the old songs, how are we gonna do that without coming off as tacky? So I suppose one way to accomplish that is to work on some new material.

"We haven't jammed but I don't really know what it would sound like. Joey (guitarist) told me not to worry about it, he said, 'Just write some songs and the Pixies will make it sound like the Pixies.'"

Nothing Catholic on the horizon. But then again. What does that mean. I mean. Horizon in terms of real life - frnck blck

Frank Black Says Pixies 'Getting Closer' To Making New LP
07.29.2005 10:14 AM EDT

'We gotta do something else if we're going to ... continue to make money,' he says.

After the San Diego Street Scene on Saturday, the Newport Folk Festival next weekend and a European tour in August, the Pixies will call an end to their triumphant reunion — and that could be a good thing for fans.

"We gotta do something else if we're going to go out there and continue to make money," singer/guitarist Frank Black explained recently. "I mean, we could keep doing it the way we're doing it, but it might ... at some point, we'll be overstaying our welcome, so to speak, as the reunited band. We have to either stop being reunited and go back to our lives or do something vital and relevant."

That something could very well be the first Pixies studio album in 14 years. Fans have speculated about the possibility of another album since the band first reunited last spring, but the Pixies have avoided the subject in interviews and seemingly with each other (see "New Pixies LP Unlikely, But Another New Track's On The Way").

But, "as the high-paying gigs get fewer and fewer, yes, we're getting closer," joked Black, who was known as Black Francis during the Pixies' initial tenure. "We haven't thought about it too much. I'm sure we'd make a fine record, we just haven't done it yet."

The recording sessions would not come immediately, however, as bassist Kim Deal is making another reunion album of sorts, with the Breeders, and Black is hoping to tour behind his just-released solo album, Honeycomb (see "Frank Black Covers Elvis, Duets With Ex-Wife On Dylanesque Album").

Black is also putting the finishing touches on another solo album he recorded in October, tentatively titled The Sicilian.

"I guess there's a Mario Puzo ['The Godfather'] book called 'The Sicilian,' so I don't know, I can't decide if I should continue to call it that," Black said.

The Pixies singer wrote some of the songs with Reid Paley, who co-authored the Honeycomb tune "Another Velvet Nightmare," although Black said the follow-up is quite different.

"I did a song that's musically based on some famous classical music," Black said. "So that has a sophisticated, kind of Leonard Cohen vibe. I don't know. The record hasn't officially been declared finished. We're just not in a rush."

As for this summer's Pixies tour, the band has added some different tunes to its set, including "Stormy Weather," but otherwise, not much has changed.

"It sort of feels like the same summer," Black said. "I have to keep reminding myself it's a different summer."

Doesn't seem to be any text to this article from NME, titled "Pixies mainman gives lowdown on band's new album", maybe they 'll update it later.

By the way this promo poster is pretty cool, obviously being sold by somebody that doesn't know much about the band.

Pixies Keeping Busy

In between reunion show dates, members of the Pixies have been busy with their respective projects.

Guitarist Joey Santiago has been composing and recording original music for the upcoming Showtime comedy Weeds, the story of a recently widowed suburban woman who makes ends meet by becoming the neighborhood pot dealer. Weeds premiers on Showtime Aug. 10, and will air Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 p.m.

Meanwhile, singer Frank Black just released a new solo album, Honeycomb.

The Pixies are currently touring the U.S., with European dates coming up in mid-August.

BLACK FEARS PIXIES COMEBACK ALBUM WILL BE A LONG TIME COMING

THE PIXIES reunion might be short lived because leader FRANK BLACK insists he can't justify touring next year (06) without having new material to play.

The GIGANTIC rockers feel like they're under pressure to record a new album, but Black is keen to return to his solo career after teaming up with soul session stars STEVE CROPPER and SPOONER OLDHAM for his acclaimed new CD HONEYCOMB.

He also reports that bandmate KIM DEAL is keen to return to the studio with her rock group the BREEDERS and drummer DAVID LOVERING is planning to return to his side job as a magician - so Pixies fans will have a long wait before the group, which reformed last year (04), returns to the studio - if at all.

Black says, "We don't want to overstay our welcome. If we were gonna go on tour next summer, for example, we feel under a little pressure to record a record or something.

"We haven't booked a session or anything. I've never had this much attention put on me... I feel like I'm in OASIS or something, or some really hot band. Maybe I am, I don't know."

Meanwhile, Black hopes to follow up his new solo album by piecing together another supergroup for his next recording - he'll team up with former FACES star IAN McLAGAN and the BAND's LEVON HELM.

Pixies Confirm Reports of New Album
by Frances Lopez | 07.21.2005

This is probably something that most fans have been dreaming about for over a decade: a new Pixies album. Pixies frontman Frank Black (or Black Francis, depending on what tickles your fancy) has confirmed that the band, who just reunited last year, will be recording their first studio album since 1991's Trompe Le Monde. Not much has been released about this forthcoming album, but to most fans, all that matters is that it's finally happening.

The band has been getting back into the swing of things after playing shows all around the world for the past year. Last year's online single "Bam Thwok" was the first Pixies recording in thirteen years, and was supposed to be part of the "Shrek 2" soundtrack, but was rejected before the soundtrack was to be reproduced. The band also did a cover of a Warren Zevon song for the late artists' tribute album.

The Pixies will be headlining this year's Reading and Leeds Festivals in the UK and will be announcing further tour dates in the late fall. Frank Black's new solo album Honeycomb hit records stores this week, and rumor has it that possible new material for Kim Deal's band The Breeders will be coming out in 2006.

Pixies To Record New Album

Pixies have announced that they will record their first album in over 14 years after happily reforming last year to go on a world tour.

Frank Black said, 'It's all hugs and kisses, I'm pleased to report. We have been discussing recording a new album lately.'

'As happy as we are with the success of the reunion tour, we really want to make a record for the right reasons, whether it is successful commercially or not.'

'We would be satisfied if it played like our other records, never chart-topping but always in print.'

The band will headline the main stage at Reading and Leeds at the Carling Festival at the end of August.

Get in the studio while you're all still hugging and kissing! These articles do look like a bit of a PR tease but still encouraging. Sorry to not see "Tom Waits - Producer?" tagged onto any of these headlines, that would be a truely historical collaberation.

Pixies, Rolling Stones Announce New Records

It’s been fourteen and eight years respectively, but both the Pixies and The Rolling Stones have confirmed that they have new material on the way. For the Pixies, the move heralds their first studio album since 1991’s ‘Trompe Le Monde’.

With their celebrated comeback still going swimmingly, the Pixies have announced that they’ll be returning to the studio for the first time since the brief sessions that resulted in 2004’s download-only single ‘Bam Thwok’.

During press interviews for his imminent solo record ‘Honeycomb’, frontman Frank Black confirmed to contactmusic that, while the band have experienced personal tensions in the past, "it's all hugs and kisses" after last year's reunion tour:

"We have been discussing a new album lately,” he explained. “As happy as we are with the success of the reunion tour, we really want to make a record for the right reasons, whether it is successful commercially or not."

Of the new material he says, "We would be satisfied if it played like our other records. Never chart-topping but always in print".

The band headline the Reading and Leeds Carling Weekender at the end of August (27-29).

Which is confusing, because he has stated before that they would record eventually. They have written new material, apparently, though!!

Frontman Francis has now released that relations in the group remain very positive and will probably result in the first new album by the Pixies since "Trompe Le Monde" in 1991.

He explained: "It's all hugs and kisses, I'm pleased to report. We have been discussing recording a new album lately.

"As happy as we are with the success of the reunion tour, we really want to make a record for the right reasons, whether it is successful commercially or not."

He continued: "We would be satisfied if it played like our other records, never chart-topping but always in print."

Pixies headline the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds at the end of June in the UK. Francis releases his latest solo album, "Honeycomb", on Monday.

Taking into account that the NME's source is The Sun, I am now beginning to doubt the validity of this claim! Also, that BBC 6Music item specifies that 'record for the right reasons' quote. That is not a claim that they are going to record a new album!

This seems like the same type of rumor-mill as publicity machine game that FB ran on the media before SMYT. He resurrects a piece of juicy Pixies related gossip and fans the flame a bit. It gets the band back in the news and every article eventually includes the only other newsworthy item attached to FB right now, he has a solo disc out in 3 days.

Its genius.

“I want to be a star!” I cried
They said, “You’re overqualified.
Why don’t you learn to tune your damn guitar?”
