All I can say, is while I stood about two hundred yards away from the Pixies along with the other 100,000 people that were watching the show, I was just thinking, you know, I would much rather see Frank performing his solo stuff in a club somewhere. I saw the Pixies numerous times in the '90s and they were great. I have seen Frank a couple of times solo and he was GREAT as well. But we move on. I know it is blasphemy, but the Pixies are doing nothing more than picking up checks right now. Their performance in Austin was the most uninspired show I have ever seen. Nobody cared, nobody bothered mixing or talking to the crowd. The Pixies were the band of the 1990s, now it is time for Frank and the Catholics to become the band of the .....what the hell do you call the decade beofre you like get to the 20s?

Music on Talk Shows - The Week of July 2

Drake Lelane
, Jul 02, 2007

If you're still jonesin' for some fireworks
after July 4th, look no further then this
Saturday night for Austin City Limits'
rerun of a triumphant performance
by the Pixies
. Recorded in 2004 at the tail
end of their reunion tour, this episode
catches the band at their full (reunited)
fury. You'd think that it would've warranted
a DVD release by now, but aside from
bootlegs, this is your only source for the performance. So see it
again (or see what you missed).

Meanwhile, over at the Sundance Channel, this week's Abbey
Road
features the honey-kissed voice of Ray Lamontagne,
along with Shawn Colvin and The Zutons playing in the
legendary studio.

And finally, my second child is scheduled to be born today,
which should explain the brevity of my commentary (along
with my absence in the coming week). I'll most likely be listening to his tiny set of lungs over any of
these other options.... happy 4th all!

Hey Jon, always appreciate a "little" humor.

But, seriously, how 'bout those last recording sessions you had for Nashville 2? Never did hear much about those, and as you can imagine, we are all very curious. You shared with us the difficulty that sprung up when Dan's studio and most of the Honeycomb muscians were unavailable, and the nonstop, 24 hour days, to get the project going! So, what was that like? And what else happened?

Thanks.

P.S. We need something until Honeycomb comes out. If we can't listen to the music let us listen to some of the stories.

I just wanted to make it clear that everytime the term "TIVO" is used I receive a royalty.

In my friggin dreams.

Enjoyed it myself.

bye,

I TIVO'd it in regular old NTSC. The great thing about ACL is that it's not edited the "modern" way with fast MTV-style cuts-- I never felt dizzy while watching it.

Though I am also burned out on many of these songs, it was still an enjoyable hour.

QUASI-REVIEW

Yeah, so I ended up TIVOing (what do you call it when technology spawns a new-fangled verb? A nonce spelling?) the whole thing last night, on HDTV no less. Evidently, PBS has a HD channel now. Go figure. Did it make a difference quality-wise? Oh my God, did it. A handsomely shot show, filmed in HD, apparently, so every detail is crystaline and crisp, both image and sound. You can make out FB's eyeliner, plain as day, as well as the scratches on JS's guitar pedals. Lots of neat close-ups and angles.

It was an enjoyable show, and the highlights for me were the high-octane numbers. I saw them four times on this tour, so I am burned out---as well as they are, I imagine---on a few of the songs, such as Monkey Gone to Heaven.

The good thing: the whole hour is dedicated to the Pixies. Usually two bands are features, thirty minutes a piece. This show ran about 55 minutes.

In short, worth catching for sure. As if you were considering missing it.

REMINDER:
The show is on tonight---this Saturday---for a few people.
For most, it should be shown tomorrow evening, 8pm EST.
I will be TIVOing it, but I don't know how to transfer from TIVO to something else.

different PBS stations show Austin City Limits at different times and on different days. For me, it's next Thursday at 10. For someone I know in California, it's Saturday night at 2 AM.

Check your local listings or go to http://www.pbs.org/klru/austin/tvschedule/index.html and click on "Local Schedule".

I'm not sure, but lately I've noticed a disturbing increase in the number of people referring to the current decade as the "oh-ohs" (0-0s). Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just an isolated outbreak? Has "oh-ohs" become the accepted term?

I sure hope not. It makes me want to cut people.

Shazeb, trust me when I say this Honeycomb is worth the wait!!! It will knock your socks off!!

Stupidme, you are so right, Frank and for a matter of a fact the rest of the band was more about the music than chatting, which is cool with me.

I went to the ACL festival performance, and I thought I'd chime in. I have seen Frank Black in concert once prior (with the Catholics in 2003 - also in Austin) and I thought the Pixies rocked this festival show. After hearing some bootlegs of other shows, the no-talking with the crowd seems to be pretty much on par with what usually happens. Of course, it is worth noting that I had never seen the Pixies in their hey-day. kthx

Frank is not a dancing bear, he never was and never will be, that's why he's different! He's there for the music and not to talk to the crowd, and I'm glad they are receiving a lot of checks, they deserve it more than any band!

Well Shazeb, have you heard about Honeycomb, Franks new album coming out this summer? That's pretty cool!!!!
SHAZEB ANDLEEB Posted - 01/13/2005 : 18:29:22
No, Frank can't win. So many people got so mad at him for breaking up the band. Some refused to follow his solo career. I have talked to so many people that have not given his solo stuff the time of day. I admit, the Pixies were my favorite band and I was mad at Frank for breaking them up. However, I just loved his first three solo albums so much. Then I liked where he went with the catholics. They guy can just recreate himself at will, a talented musician. But like the CD says, the Pixies are dead.

I know when I saw the Pixies for the first time last summer, I knew there would be something missing from their performance. Just because it had been so long and Franks music has changed alot over the years. It was fun, and a privilage for me to see all four of them on that stage that night. I knew all the words, and sang along, and it felt like what it was. A reunion tour. The songs played just that bit slower, without the urgency and innocence like in the beginning. They played like four seasoned musicians, doing what they do best. Becasue they are. I have a conflict in me where I'm so glad they got back together because, it's the PIXIES, but I sure would love to see some frank Black. He can't win, can he.
SHAZEB ANDLEEB Posted - 01/13/2005 : 17:03:24
Well, I sw them at the festival and then at Stubbs a couple of weeks later. My criticism of the festival was that they were just plowing through the songs, doing nothing unique or innovative. They just appeared like they did not care. I know that Frank is not a big "hey how ya'll doin' tonight" kind of guy. But he always got into the songs and cut loose in the past. I don't know, maybe I have just heard the Pixies too much. I mean, they had very few albums and I have hread each one about a million times. I don't know, I like Frank's solo stuff so much.

Welcome to the forum, Shazeb. Are you talking about the ACL studio session or the festival one they put out online? Because I thought the latter was an excellent show. Perhaps your distance from the stage made it feel impersonal? I've been to Frank's solo gigs and Pixies gigs where "nobody bothered mixing or talking to the crowd." I find the amount of chatter taking place is often in direct proportion to the amount of beer being consumed. Doesn't mean he doesn't care or want to be there, it's just the way he is. Frank is not a dancing bear.
