actually, I would say that the acoustic version is severely lacking. It's a very rhythmic song (bass and drums are intrinsic to it) so it loses a whole lot when done solo-acoustic.
Which is probably why he added that disclaimer!  |

It's no my favourite b-side but I like it for the singing, and because it's sounds like an old dirty blues-rock, like a Screamin'Jay Hawkins one

I dont know, but i quite like the idea of flying fish...
And i really like most of the B sides, some of them better than certain album tracks (i wont name any so as not to get mobbed by angry pixie fans  ).

Sorry. It's "THIS no swim, THIS fly." THIS particular Manta Ray. Do you really think he has to single out the fact that a Manta Ray is a fish, or that he's suggesting that ALL FISH fly? And in the other Manta Ray B-side, he's saying "a fish from ocean BLUE" not "ocean flew." |

I like this song. Very catchy. I think it's good enough to be an album cut. It was probably considered just a little too weird, so it ended up as a B-side. |

'Tony's Theme' is another song that could have been just fine as a b-side...

"This don't swim, this fly" makes the most sense, I say. He's singing about the Manta Ray, but not the one that swims. The one that flies. "This (manta ray) don't swim! This (manta ray) fly!"
"Dancing the Manta Ray" is the Pixies song I'd probably choose if I were making a mix CD for a Halloween party.
I agree that the FB & the Catholics version of this song rocked. I have been known to sometimes play my li'l MP3 of it (recorded at some show somewhere by somebody) about 10 times in a row. |

Good God, it's "Fish don't swim"! There is no question; after all, what's a manta ray? A big f---ing fish*! The UFO looks like a manta ray. Fish fly!
(*A fish kind of thing, anyway.)
The song kicks ass. I liked the Catholics' take on it too, where it was really stop-start (DUH DUH DUH! [silence] DUH DUH DUH! [silence] DUH DUH DUH!). The best Pixies version is on the bootleg from December 22 1991 (Los Angeles Palladium).

I think you're right about that, Thomas. after all, a manta ray is a fish but he's using it as a metaphor for a UFO. so its "fish don't swim, fish fly"...
This song is cool, its simple and kind of visceral. But between this one and "Manta Ray", I'll choose the latter as the better B-side. This song is especially fun live, but it just isn't album material. |

Frank understands that good rock n roll is sometimes primitive and minimal. I like the "caveman" grammar ("your head can go real screw", "this no swim"). Plus it's a call to dance (even though it doesn't describe any steps). Add all that up and "Dancing the Manta Ray" is a song where Frank's appreciation for old time rock n roll shows through. Some surly rockabilly band in 1959 could've come up with this song. That's a compliment. |
