Today's random song of the day is Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
Speed leaving without warning
I need some place to sleep tonight
Blowing in the rocking of the pine

Speed leaving without warning
The sunlight's going
Into the mountain
I will crawl
Into the mountain

Sun shines in the rusty morning
Skyline of the Olympus Mons
I think about it sometimes

Sun shines in the rusty morning
Once I had a good fly
Into the mountain
I will fall
Into the mountain
Oh yeah

Into the mountain
I will fall
Into the mountain
Oh yeah

Into the mountain
I will fall

Thanks! I took this picture when I visited the Olympus Mons back in the summer of '95, the sun rose that rusty morning and and I put my TLM cassette-tape in my sports walkman and went on a free-shoot. I was all alone the air was a tad dry but the view was magnificent! I will try to post more pics of that trip, the one of the girl I picked up at the bar is a beauty.

Was she your Martian honey?

Here's a picture I took without her knowledge, I hid a mini camera in my vanity bag. She was hot, I look pretty good myself I think, kinda like that guvenah from califoniah. And yes, I normally do my hair before I go to bed! Especially if I'm planning of taking a picture of myself.

the bass line's loop is just heartbreaking. I love this song dearly and listen to it constantly walking the streets of New York City. Though it reminds me of the first time I got sent home from the movie theater I was working at, driving home early in the dark night with snow falling and singing 'I need some place... to sleep... tonight..." and that double snare hit right in the middle there. And the big ol' frank black resolving ending.... god... just makes my heart swell.

Very cool song, with kind of profound , beautiful imagery creating lyrics and cool atmspheric keyboards. Not even one of the best songs on a great album.

for me it was a hidden gem. for whatever reason it got hidden behind all the other great tunes on tlm. then i woke up one day and would listen to it non stop, dance around, and say what a fuckin great tune.

A beautiful and terrible song. Gives me goose-bumps every time I listen.

Doesn't "rust" have something to do with the red dust on Mars? I think it was in one of the Ray Bradbury's stories? Dunno.

PS: shineoftheever: That picture of yours, that's almost exactly the image I get when I listen to this song...

I get the idea that people who bought the albums as they came out took some time getting used to Bossanova and TLM, since they didn't sound like the earlier albums. TLM was actually the second Pixies album I got, and while it took some getting used to, I wasn't really holding it up to the band's earlier work. Getting into a band in retrospect is often different from getting into them as they're releasing albums and changing. Sort of like how people who were already They Might Be Giants fans back in 1994 seemed to think John Henry was some huge change in sound for the band, while I see it as more of a logical progression from their earlier work.

This one shows the beauty in music the Fantastic Four Pixies are capable of making.A live version I have(live in Vienna if I'm correct)is incredible.

my first pixies album--i dig it but do miss Kim's vocals...I LOVE this song! imagine waking on the biggest volcano in the solarsystem and then flying around the planet...how rad would that be...

Didn't like it much at first. But it grew on me, and now I like it quite a bit. And I also don't understand people who dislike Trompe Le Monde. Great album!

This strikes me as a kind of abstract song. It works pretty well, and Mars references are generally cool, so...yeah, good song. Trompe Le Monde is a severely underrated album.

i love the song. never really grabbed me at first, just fitted in nicely. but since listening to it on my minidisc, wow, it's just amazing, i love it. i love how it sounds, so nicely produced, and just a fantastic song!

And it's hard to be a human being, and it's harder as anything else, and I'm lonesome when you're around, and I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself, and I miss you when you're around.

"god talks to us through this album !" - that's excellent, two_reelers.

Advice: get Trompe Le Monde on vinyl, and prepare to be stunned as Bird Dream Of The Olympus Mons starts the B side. This record was meant to be 2-sided.

I love this song, on most days it is my favourite Pixies song. period.

This song is so beautiful it has been repeating in my mind for months. I too wonder what someone wouldn't like about Trompe Le Monde (I don't like Sad Punk).

They didn't play Trompe Le Monde live here; This song is an impressive display of range and power by FB, it must be a difficult chore.

Truly inspiring, I've been toying with it as a solo guitar piece.

magnificient - wonderful lyrics, wonderful tune, wonderful keyboards & synthetics.
so few words, and still so impressive. even when i heard it the first time, i had a very vivid vision of this bird flying off into the sunrise.
"rusty morning" - can there any better phrase for golden morning sunlight ?
i got the mars reference later on - it made this song even better.
and isn't absolutely insane & ingenious, that after this silent and endlessly beautiful tune, they jump into the frenzy "space(i believe in)".
i don't get those people who dislike trompe le monde - god talks to us through this album !

I joined the cult of this mouse / and now I occidentally tic-tac
