Hey, just joined up, first post, I heard the pixies for the first time last Thursday. Angry as I found them so late! Anyway good timing I guess, kinda, with the reunion thingy. It was the 04/28/04 Eugene performance. I want the Saskatoon one!

Anyway, went down to the library and grabbed the cds they had.... and was disappointed. Doolittle and Bossanova. They're just bland, the recordings i guess, the live performance was sooo much better. So help me out, I can't find the Saskatoon .torrent, it's disappeared, and where else can you point me too that I should know of?

Must...consume...pixies...

I tried to listen to those but I couldn´t!
I don´t know why? I just been able to see the photos...

Yeah, the Saskatoon show was/is all kinds of awesome.

Don't worry, dog... you'll listen to the records a bit more and wonder what you were thinking when you posted this, and it'll haunt you for the rest of your days. Actually, maybe you should worry. I wouldn't want to be haunted. :)

Although it's not my favourite, all the Pixies albums are so good that it doesn't really matter: start with Trompe Le Monde. Or Bossanova (which is my favourite). You'll hear a bunch of songs you've never heard live and then you can listen to them as someone hearing them fresh.

Also, if you want to hear some live FB (some people just prefer live music, I know how it is), go to http://www.justconcerts.ca/concerts/concert.cfm?Concert_Id=191&Act_Id=253&Concert_IsLive=True and you can hear Frank Black live in Regina, Saskatchewan which is almost Saskatoon. They have a few Pixies covers in there, too, like Gouge Away.

Exactly, Denis! I'm willing to bet 90% of the people on this forum went through that same stage on their first listen to the Pixies. The first album I got was Doolittle and I thought it sounded like crappy 80's rock so I basically shelved it for a few months after about three listens. Then I finally decided to give it another chance and on that one listen it completely blew me away and I was hooked. And I'd like to take this opportunity to strongly recommend Trompe Le Monds, which is in my opinion by far their best work. But I suppose it might be better to get s/t, Come on Pilgrim, and Surfer Rosa first since those are their first albums. Oh, and don't forget to listen to Frank Black's solo albums, which are far superior to the Pixies (and you may have to give them much more than ten days to sink in so be patient and most importantly be willing to listen even if you hate them).
Well, welcome to the forum! It's always nice to know that someone else has discovered the Pixies.

The first Pixies record I heard was Surfer Rosa, and I liked it. And when I first listened to Bossanova, I have to say I really hated it. Bland indeed. Didn't like Doolittle much either. But I insisted and after 8-10 repeated listenings, I was hooked for the rest of my life.
It's great that you're beginning to enjoy the albums, dog.

ten days later...: the albums rock; still need to grab Surfer Rosa though.
The weird stuff; I don't sing... til now, pixies songs only; my voice kicks arse .
I keep getting the urge to inject pixies lyrics into conversations for no reason whatsoever.
And they can make stuff work that I'd normally cringe at. First heard Is She Weird and thought "this is the type or arty-euroy stuff I can't hear"...half way through I'm chanting along.
Headphones are king.

"Cannot find server"? Wow, you'd have to REALLY hate Frank to make a page like that!

And benji, you didn't offend my sensibilities. I just found it an amusing concept that the best US show would have been played in Canada.

for the ultra-defensive people... bland compared to the live performance I heard and I probably meant less dynamic or slicker or sum-such anyway, plus I'd only had the albums for a freaken week

Pixies is good... this I know already

This is the most beautiful description that I ever read about Pixies songs. Almost makes me cry.

Certainly worth giving the albums a few more listens.

Certainly worth rememebering that coming to forum and slagging off an artist's work won't endear yourself :P

Happy listening :)

I know - shame really, we could of had a chess tournament or something with the anti-forum members, or maybe some sort of exchange programme. I imagined it to be a sort of "Evil Superman" version of this forum with topics like

"TOTY - Just realised its a piece of utter crap" and "10 Pixies songs you'd like to see burn in the pits of hell"

Wow - there's an anti Frank Black forum

Never can quite figure out how people can expel so much energy on hating stuff...

Compared to GWAR I think the Pixies would probably be described as "bland" - everything's relative after all, and what's the fun of a forum if people can't have differences of opinion?

You're totally right. They grow and grow inside you until you can't leave them. Bossanova could be dissappointing the very first time. It needed in my case about 7-8 listenings. And this is so strange... (Pixies Spell?), 'cause I never listen a record more than 8 times.

i was more refering to the disclive cd's.
as i went to 0 of the actual shows, i have no idea.

and i apologise to vovat for offending his sensibilities.
i was going to write "warm-up tour" but "US tour " was shorter even if factually incorrect.

the Cds you heard were not re-mastered obviously.

Don't ever post "Doolittle and Bossanova" are bland, that will not be recieved well by most people here... good luck with defending that on here...

If you want to say Doolittle is band, I'd suggest going to

It's were the so-called anti-fans have their own special forum.

Anyway, I think I fed you a little bit.

some people are totally into come on pilgrim/surfer rosa/doolittle and others like bossanova/trompe. there is no doubt they are different periods but true fans (like myself) tend to flip-flop. I love them all.

hey dog, have you heard franks solo stuff? invest in a copy of Teenager of the Year, put it in your CD player, get a 6 pack, hit repeat, enjoy, repeat if necessary.

Headphones, right! that's something I know already, just didn't do. And yeah, I'm after the Saskatoon one cos people keep saying it's the one to grab. I'm hunting for them the_thing, believe me, Trompes supposed to be the best right? Thanks Mad Lucas, i'll check out Bailyswalk.com. And frank_black_francis... stick it
the thing Posted - 07/15/2004 : 06:20:58
It's weird when your first experience of a band is a live one - it can totally distort your perception of the band. Definitely check out Surfer Rosa and and Trompe as they are a bit less shiny and "bland"(???), and as Mad Lucas says - play em darn loud - I think Lucas is right - definitely more intense through headphones, something about the vocals just comes across more that way

hey is so fucking amazing...

that reverb on the first hey... i can only hear it on full volume in a quiet environment with headphones... the guitar from joey during the second verse is so faint but adds such atmosphere (i only noticed he was playing something after hearing it on live DVD, where it's much louder).. all these little touches that are present on all of the gil norton produced albums... they're wonderful.

Try downloaing some live tracks from Bailyswalk.com message board. Theyre all 1988-89 ones, but I think this was when they were at their best. I agree that the live albums are more energetic, as it is with most bands, but I don't think any band, even the Pixies, could record Hey as they did on Doolittle. It is a beautiful recording.

Heres a tip: Listen to the albums through headphones. I don't know what it does exactly, but I fell in love with the albums all over again, by listening to them through 'phones.

definitey give the albums more of a chance - you'll get much more listening pleasure out of them opposed to the live cd's

phewy!

get the others (Surfer Rosa & Trompe Le Monde) before you make any judgements about the albums, cause they are absolutely fabulous.
