Posted - 07/08/2004 : 07:00:33 Just to answer those General Frank Black chat bastards (just joking) I was wondering whether people prefer Pixies to Frank Black's solo and Catholics stuff, because there seemed to be absolute Frank Black support in that chat (maybe because it was FB chat).
This isn't to say that I don't like FB's solo stuff, because musically it is faultless, but i feel it lacks that raw inspiration and fury that attracted me to Pixies in the first place (As well as the fact that I am in love with Kim Deal).

Posted - 07/27/2004 : 01:36:35 The difference doesn't lie in Frank/Pixies but in Catholics/Pixies. Franks writes the songs, and the difference lies in how the other musicians make it sound. I can see the point that this is a Frank Black forum, but since this is the Pixies section of this forum, you can't blame Pixies fans for posting here.

I don't like Frank Black solo except Teenager of the year album (kinda pixies-like) |

Posted - 07/20/2004 : 06:25:15 Man this pixies reunion thing is getting crazy, way outa control, i mean some of the mpg clips from their shows in europe and south america are just nuts...Like where did all these people come from anyway?? Like this pixies thing world wide is really really sureal. I think during their last show of the tour their gona get beamed up back to their space ship and fly away for another 12 years or something. |

Posted - 07/17/2004 : 10:40:54 I also grew listening to the Pixies, my best moments ever in my life, are connected with C.O.P. But I think it´s like a journey, and it´s good to see Frank Black changing and making new things! Of course that I love the power of the Pixies, but I also love what Frank Black has been doing, I think he´s growing too!

Posted - 07/16/2004 : 14:11:06 I grew up on the Pixies and through the shift into Frank Black and the FB & the C's. So over the course of (Yikes!) getting close to 20 years or so now, I've been able to see the progression occur at more or less a natural rate. For some who were introduced to the Pixies and FB recently or at roughly the same time, you may not quite get the same sense of natural progression as someone who had to wait for a new album annually for 17 years. I'm actually curious as to what it must be like to hear his work for the first time and all at once.
Having said that, its really tough to say who I prefer. All of his albums remind me of some point in my life. The happiest times of my life were Bossanova and Teenager of the Year. Dog in the Sand was a bad time, so lots of mixed feelings about that, though its an excellent album. Its a very close call, but I think I'd have to go with Frank & the Cs as all time favorite over the Pixies.
For the guy who said something about the Cult of Ray tour, just two words sum up my take on their DC show in '96: HOLY SHIT! In all honesty, in my humble opinion, and all other disclaimers aside they absolutely BLEW AWAY whatever the Pixies had in terms of raw rock 'n roll power. Hands down, No photo finish required. The version of Brackish Boy they did was just insane (though being DC the crowd was pretty subdued. eh...) I haven't seen the band quite like that ever since, they weren't even the Catholics yet at that point, but damn they had power. Haven't seen the Pixies reborn yet, so not sure how it will compare. |

Posted - 07/13/2004 : 14:16:42 I agree the catholics are way more tighter at the moment but it is a different style of rock. I only got to see frank on the SMYT tour as i come from africa but would have rather seen/heard him do stuff off the first 3 albums than pixies songs. I would kill to have seen him in '96 doing the majority of Cult of Ray songs.

Just curious, HPM...do you think the general energy of the Pixies show was superior? Because, I've seen them both, and I would have to say the FB&C's shows were much tighter, and with a lot of energy exhibited by the band itself.
I did still very much enjoy the Pixies show...they were, after all, playing live shows for the first time in years.
I suppose it hinges on whether you like the Pixies or FB in general too.

Posted - 07/11/2004 : 18:57:48 i hate all this crap about how long ago you joined the forum, and your average posting per day, and how many posts you have on the FB threads as compared to the Pixies threads, etc etc! what bullshit! i mean i'm sure there is thousands that visited this site before pixies reunion rumours and became members because it was such a BIG story and wanted to add their thoughts, and then once your a member you have no barriers to continue posting, no matter how unimportant it is... also many forget their passwords (like me) or other reasons.. as for some members actually going to the bother of seeing when other members joined, in what sections they posted in and calculating other statistics, I mean I think frank would like you to get a life..... enough said i think! |

Posted - 07/09/2004 : 11:33:44 Actually, I think I'd consider Frank's work with the Catholics as more "rock" than his work with the Pixies. They play true rock. The Pixies rock in their own way, but it's more "alternative" or whatever you wanna call it.

Posted - 07/09/2004 : 09:17:35 Yeah, but what if the choice is between a killer album with 11 tracks, or a killer album with 20-some-odd?
Although I can understand the appeal of a short, strong, tightly unified album, I have a general preference for albums with lots of songs. It's partially the completist in me, I suppose.

Frank's first couple of solo albums are priceless. The last four Catholics albums are all fine pieces of work. And it has to be said, there are some great songs on 'Pistolero' and the self titled. 'Cult of Ray' isn't bad. And the Pixies are rockin', full stop.
I'd probably pay the price of ticket just to watch Frank shop for groceries. |

Posted - 07/09/2004 : 00:59:28 I'm going to be honest. I prefer Pixies over Frank solo. I prefer Frank solo over Catholics. But this rule only works before "Black Letter Days". This doesn't mean I don't like Catholics stuff: I love it!!! But, you know, I'm 23 now. I want rock music!. I want Frank screaming and Joey rocking out! It's logical that I enjoy Pixies work over Frank's work. And I'm on this forum and not in a Pixies forum because its members are cool and friendly. This is my truth.

but in general i'm more a fan of loud rock than country music, so that's probably why |
