Today's random song of the day is Debaser.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
Got me a movie
I want you to know
Slicing up eyeballs
I want you to know
Girlie so groovy
I want you to know
Don't know about you
But I am un chien Andalusia

I am un chien Andalusia

Wanna grow
Up to be
Be a debaser

Debaser

Got me a movie
Ha ha ha hoa
Slicing up eyeballs
Ha ha ha hoa
Girlie so groovie
Ha ha ha hoa
Don't know about you
But I am un chien Andalusia

I am un chien Andalusia

Debaser

hi everyone, my first post here.
I´m not a big fan but I like all the pixies stuff I´ve heard.
today I read for the first time Debaser´s lyrics.
the feeling I got is that he was making fun of the movie, as if he hated it.
got me a movie hi hi hi ho
slicing up eyeballs hi hi hiho
girlie so groovy hi hi hi ho
wanna grow up to be a debaser

Andalusia works. Perhaps this is ths only reason. Francis uses vocals as an instrument in the early years, so I supose he wasn't worried about if he uses the correct words.

I have a short story about this song. I don't like it at the beginning, like all Doolittle album. But after a while without hearing it I catch myself singing out this song, so I have to put it on one more time. This is probably the way that some Frank songs work.

Didn't Frank say that "Andalou" sounded too French, so he sang "Andalusia" instead?

I like how FB created the word Andalusia for this song...and I don't understand either...which I also like.

I like your insight into the writing process, whore.

Gosh - how often do you get to say something like that?

That was cool in a 'Wayne and Garth' sort of way.

Debaser good.
Me like.

I don't understand why he used the word "Andalusia". Andalucia is a spanish place, but the spanish title is "Un perro andaluz". So it has to be "Un chien andaluz". Perhaps he tried to say: "Un chien andaluz, yeah", and he forgot it later. Perhaps he liked the way "andalusia" sounds. Don't know. But I know a fact: Frank has improved his spanish a lot. Try to compare Vamos or Isla de Encanta on this last tour with the recorded version. Absolutely nothing to do.

Eh, pootypoot :
just to be sharp, the french word for "fucker" is "baiseUr".
"baiser" means "to fuck" (the verb), "kiss" (the noun) or "to kiss" (the verb).
Phonetically, actually, you pronounce BASER (in deBASER) almost the same way as you pronounce "baiseur".

And whoretathedoor is right, there are really lots of french FB/PIXIES fans. Pixies or FB have always been loved in our country, and in lots of european countries, even more than in USA (I wonder why ...).

Debaser is a great great song, as most of Pixies songs.
It was real fun to hear thousands of people singing "I am un chien andalusia" (that is a combination of english "I am", spanish "un ... andalousia" and french "chien" - this last word is said in a spanish manner but dog in spanish is "perro"), yesterday in Belfort, France (Festival Les Eurockéennes).

I don't think this one is poppy (In either the musical or floral sence ;)) we've just been de-sensitised to its impact. Remember the first time you heard this song? Poppy? No way man. Ideally you should first hear this when you're a kid in the back of your parents car. Intro starts.......smile on kids face.......parent seems irritated.........singing starts.........kid is amazed.......parent freaks out.......fight over radio controls, "change it" "no leave it its cool", "its my car", "i hate you"....etc, etc....car goes out of control and at this stage "slicing up eyeballs " are the least of your concerns

It's a flower. Poppies will make them sleep!

Seriously, in this context, I tend to think it means that the song is simplistic and catchy. Not a bad thing at all, in my opinion.

What's wrong with poppy?

Of course I can figure out the literal definition, but it is not exactly a common term. In fact, I think I can count the number of places I have heard it on one finger. So what does it MEAN?
All_over_the_world Posted - 06/27/2004 : 04:02:10
Does anyone remember those indie discos at the end of the 80's? They were brilliant, Debaser was a staple song.
Carl Posted - 06/25/2004 : 09:36:01
It's kinda they're theme tune. It could be there best song, but you listen to it too much and it becomes less interesting then the other songs as a result(same with anything, really, although I almost never get tired of it). It was transcribed in an old issue of Total Guitar.

(Neurotically edited for grammerical reasons!)

Great song. I don't know why so many consider it to be overly poppy. I mean, sure, compare it to the majority of Surfer Rosa and it shines, but I think there's a number of songs from Doolittle which are more instantly catchy/poppy, like Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Here Comes Your Man. Debaser has that maniacal shouting which you don't hear in the pop world to often. If you do, it's being sang in an accessible manner. Here, it's just balls out screaming.

"You gotta watch the mota, Thurston. Yr fuckin memory just goes out the window."

Absolutely glorious song. The vocals have unbelievable passion, the bass and guitars have a beautiful clean sound, and the drums are fast and poppy. The song to practice with, if you want to learn how to scream.

The first Pixies song I ever heard. I was hooked from Kims's bouncy, throbbing bass line. And then the violent, but beautiful guitar interplay of Frank and Joey. And then David barrels in with some great drumming.

I remember when I heard Frank sing (sounds like the title of a song...), and I said to my friend (whose "Doolittle C.D. it was) how amazed I was, and that I had never heard anyone sing like that, to which he said, "He's real. He's singing it like he means it. Some people try to be "good" when they sing, and come off sounding like pansies. This guy just isn't a pansy. His singing has balls". And how right he was. In fact, it was one of the only things he was right about.

I also loved the dynamics of Frank's screams with Kim's singing. Very pleasing to the ear. Harsh, but soothing at the same time. I never heard anything like it.

So "Debaser" holds a special place in my heart as being the first Pixies song I heard. And the love continued from there...

And PixieSteve's definition is correct. But for those who need more proof, here's Webster's definition of the word DEBASER:

DEBASER(n.)-something which lowers quality or character; something that demeans.

PixieSteve Posted - 06/24/2004 : 09:33:20
to debase is to lower somethings value, to degrade it. a debaser is someone who debases.

the movie was intended to make the viewer feel like they were debased, in a way.
pootypoot Posted - 06/24/2004 : 09:04:51
debaser also could be de-baiser which is french for "the fucker". just thought i'd point that out
whoreatthedoor Posted - 06/24/2004 : 07:58:52
Actually, it was shooted in France, but only for political reasons. But, Bunuel (Buńuel!) and Dalí were spanish.
But it doesn't matter at all, I was only trying to bother some french FB fans . I don't know why, but there are a lot of them!!!

Great song, no doubt about, but I've never really loved it. Something about it strikes me as too poppy or something like that. Good song, I just thing it's a bit over-appreciated.

Great opening track. Gets Doolittle off to a great start. Frantically good.

Yeah, i think it a blinder. Best intro to any song ever as well.

Evn Bowie covering it with Tin Machine didn't ruin it for me!

Debaser is one of my top five favorite Pixies songs. It's just fantabulous.

Un Chien Andalou - 7 second version: Eye slash ants from palm breasts into buttocks pulled priests donkeys on pianos, an automatic unconnected dreamlike surrealist manifesto from Bunuel & Dali circa 1928 (soundtrack added in '60) finds it's way into a rock lyric. What does it mean? Did this film inspire young Charles T. to want to grow up to be a debaser? Is there a big Reservoir in Andalusia? If I ever have any insight it's by mistake. My vision is oh so blurred.

Amazing. I don't care if it's the song that most people associate with the Pixies, it's fantastic. Very good to dance to also.
