Posted - 05/18/2004 : 17:21:42 it's not so much the chord shapes and stuff, it's being able to change from them properly and getting the rhythm right and singing at the same time, gah. |

Posted - 05/18/2004 : 11:06:32 yeah, i think it's one of the most beautiful songs of the pixies. one girlfriend make me a gift one day, the doolitle, and she runs directly to Hey... since this day, i loved hey. the madness lyrics, the chorus of whores. i loved that.

I never really nail that thingie that Charles is playing. It's so damn hard.
It took me nearly 10 years to figure it out, and it is deceptively simple, at least the way I play it (which seems right)... excuse crude diagram...
I'll use the 2nd verse as an example, since this guitar part comes in from the start of that verse, where I think (from memory) it comes in slightly later on the first verse. Note that the index finger stays across the 3 strings for all 3 chords (and you try to play only the top 3 strings). You keep hold of #1 and 'throw' the other 2 variations on at the appropriate time (pluck once on #1, and move to #2 or #3 while strings are 'ringing').
Flip between position #1 and position #2 for the first part ("Uh..."), then flip between #1 and #3 ("Said the man to the"), then switch back to #1 and #2 on 'lady'. Keep repeating #1 and #2 until "said the lady to the...", go to #1 -> #3 and keep repeating and you should be there...
The only hard part is getting the old 'muscle memory' as Kim recently called it, to learn the chord shapes...

Posted - 05/14/2004 : 09:43:24 It's a real sad, moody, romantic piece. Dos'nt Frank play the lovely little main riff? |

Don't know, but one of my faves. Second place in my all-time Pixies ranking.

It's weird 'cos it isn't supposed to be but I totally agree. I think it's possibly the most romantic song ever for me. Like I said, I know it wasn't intended to be romantic, but I think it is.
You know when people ask you, "What's your favourite song ever written?" Stupid question isn't it? I can never answer those questions. I refuse to.
However!!! If my life depended on it. 'Hey' could very possibly be my choice. It's certainly up there.

Posted - 05/12/2004 : 19:10:16 I have always thought this was one of the best pixies songs. (me too?) Something about the way it goes together, and like El Barto said, it's totally unique. No other songs like it, anywhere. When I heard the performance of this song at Coachella, I got goosebumps.

Posted - 05/12/2004 : 17:57:18 Perhaps one of the best Pixies songs ever...I agree, it's so very gripping and passionate. It doesn't sound like any other song. Can you think of *any* song which sounds remotely like Hey? It's like, from another planet.

Posted - 05/12/2004 : 17:07:35 One of the best songs on "Doolittle", and one of the Pixies' best. This is the other song on Doolittle that got me hooked (and kept me hooked) on the Pixies. Frank's guitar part is awesome, Kim's bass and "chained" vocal are spot on, Joey's solo is dark, moody, and melodic, and David's drumming suits the verses well. My favorite verse is "uh-is-the-sound-that the mother makes when her baby breaks!!!". It was cool to hear in the documentary that this song was done live (save for Kim's vocal and David's cymbal overdubs). One of the few songs in my music collection where I'm actually sad when it's over.

Posted - 05/12/2004 : 14:02:00 Best song they recorded. First song that got me hooked to them. Beatyfull and minimalistic - everything is perfect - the drums - the solo - and the singing. Regarding Black's playing - could it be that the bass marks the chord "change" and that he plays the same sequence over and over again (except for the F#). Looks that way when you see him play it. |

Posted - 05/12/2004 : 07:04:27 When I first got Doolittle, I skipped Hey once in awhile. I don't know why now. This is a very good song and has alot of that very distinctive Pixies flavor. I guess everything they play does, but this is one that sticks out in my mind. |
