Posted - 05/08/2004 : 15:52:04 I don't know if there is something wrong with my new cd but Hey starts without Frank saying "Hey", a pause and then the bass following. It just starts with the bass. It bugs me, I love it when that song starts with "Hey".

Posted - 05/17/2004 : 10:45:55 what a bizarre thing! i didn't get the new best of, as i'm a bit skint and it would only be to complete my collection... but missing off the 'hey' part! haha! i would definately notice it, i think it's the best ever start to a song! honestly. so cool the way he just shouts 'hey'... ahhhhh! odd that 4ad have allowed it to be downloaded for free, kinda cool i guess, i was trying to think of people to recommend checking it out, in an attempt to get them to understand how great the pixies are/were, but can't think of anyone who hasn't heard it... and i probably can't post to the project rockstar forums as it mentions 'whore' and they're a bit funny about 'adult' subjects...
ramble, ramble...
i actually downloaded it myself, not sure why, as i have it in mp3 format already on my pc, and on countless cd's just a meter away from me, just felt like it... and it seemed like the most hassle free way of listening to it right now.
any chance we can have a version without the 'hey' bit to download too? for those of us without the new best of?
Is it like today? Oh, oh, oh-oh. Then there followed days with kings, empires and revolutions. blood just looks the same when you open the veins. sometimes it was faith, power or reason as the cornerstone. but the furrowed brow has never left his face. he said, how did it come to this?

So - if it wasn't for "darlings" like 4AD we wouldn't be able to listen to half the music we actually enjoy and instead be forced to endure whatever the major labels deigned fit for our consumption.

Posted - 05/15/2004 : 01:37:05 precisely - it's not like as I type several thousand more cd's are being made - I personally think it's better something was said now, rather than two weeks on when replacement stock is ready.
I've seen the stickers they're using for the new version - it's gonna be pretty obvious, with a huge great big "HEY" on it! |

Posted - 05/15/2004 : 01:09:21 i wasn't talking about the mp3, i was referring to their measures to repress the cd and them actually talking about the fault oppossed to leaving people to stew for weeks and weeks.
but i wouldn't think the fact it's 4ad has made any difference to me regarding the booboo....
i'm over it now.

Posted - 05/14/2004 : 17:06:39 An mp3 does not an alleviation make. DiscLive may have been slow but the product is as advertised, mostly. The fact is 4AD cannot do the right thing because it would be too costly. If we were talking about a mega-label instead of the darling 4AD, almost this entire forum would be calling for heads. |

Posted - 05/14/2004 : 16:57:03 i don't quite follow your reasoning. i think that jake and disclive have acted very honourably, and i think that 4ad have done something very similar.
why the distinction when really disclive took weeks and weeks to ever post any kind of reply, whereas 4ad tried to alleviate any kind of problem well within a week. i'm confused.

I dont think it's funny at all for a company, country, newspaper, whatever, to be flippant and defensive when they make a mistake. It seems to be the trend that people no longer take responsibility for mistakes. Worse is to then get angry at the purchaser for being angry about it!
jo, I know this has nothing to do with you, and you've been nothing but cool on this board, but to start making snide comments to a consumer of your company's products is terrible PR.
I did a reply but just removed it, and I'm still not 100% if you're saying me or 4AD was being snide or angry, but hey... if there's a problem, email me, my email is on my profile! I'm not being either, for the record. Although I have been accused of being both, many times in the past. That's the internet for you.
in the end, I think while there's no replacement stock ready yet, a free MP3 is a good short term stopgap, until stock arrives, after which, we'll then issue another statement.
Like I asked, what would you do? It's a tricky situation to be in. It's being remedied. With a sense of humour thrown in there...
What would I do?
Issue a genuine apology, and an addmission that a mistake was made, not a defensive "it came to our attention" blurb that sounds more like the company is annoyed that they have to deal with this.
Check out Jake's apology about the DiscLive delays in shipping. It's a prefect example. I was getting impatient with DiscLive and was thinking I probably wouldn't buy from them again, but his apology was clear and sincere and let us know how and why the process is taking so long. I will definitely buy from them again, and the main reason is his taking the time to connect with us without being defensive or trying to gloss over the truth.

I might be a bit late about the discussion but okay... Is the new Best-of CD (Wave of mutilation) a gathering of regular recordings or were the songs re-recorded ? To sum it up, is there anything new in that Best-of ???
I don't see a major reason to buy a best-of CD if it only contains copies of songs that I already own....

Posted - 05/14/2004 : 08:34:42 Hey! Mistakes happen, and it honestly doesn't matter if you've proofed a something twice or a thousand times, more often than not you miss the biggie and focus on some insignificant glitch that noone else would even noticed. Moaning that people have no pride in workmanship and blah blah blah is really just insulting the people who put alot of work into this stuff. I think alot of bigger labels than 4ad would simply ignore the error (hell Microsoft would probably market it as a feature).
People will be moaning next that they left a load of songs off Come on Pilgrim...

Posted - 05/13/2004 : 12:26:59 well i only receieved my cd yesterday, and only got to listen to it as i write, and i think in this instance it really works well without the 'hey' bit. i like how it comes straight in after vamos. i think it would sound worse with the 'hey' in ther - momentum would be lost.

Posted - 05/13/2004 : 12:02:03 Here's another one: On Frank Black's "Devil's Workshop" CD, the 2nd song "Out of State", on the listing on the back of the CD, where it lists the length of the song, the font size is mistakenly different from the rest of the track lengths. How does that happen? It sticks out like a sore thumb. I am just picky, so it may not mean much, but that type of stuff makes you wonder what else the company is doing half-assed.
That's Spinart by the way, not 4AD.

Posted - 05/12/2004 : 22:57:42 I suggest we buy some and save them unopened. We'll have to wait 20 years, but it will be worth something more than what we bought it for if it's unopened. Mistakes like that are oversights that rarely happen, and when the topic/artist/product is popular enough it always increases in value.

I bought it because sometimes I don't feel like listening to any specific album, but rather a mix of all their stuff. I believe that is the exact point of a best of record. I already had DTTP but I was impressed by the tracklisting and encouraged by Jo assertions that the record flows better then the previous best of, which it definately does.
And I don't understand your last sentence. I should be happy that something is worst? What an odd statement.

uuh. ok, jop, get your jo-bingo counter on, I'm feeling all patient at the moment.
1. this compilation isn't targeted towards fans who already have the records. It's towards people who haven't heard the band before. It exists as a starting point for those people who will see them at festivals for the first time this year.
2. If you don't want to download it, don't. Seems a bit pointless adding a comment like that, a waste of your time to just go and post it on here, doesn't it?
3. What would you suggest 4AD does to put it right? I think this is a good option, for people who are pissed off cause they bought the album, minus the "hey". It's something, which is a darn sight better than nothing.
there.
I don't know, after watching senate testamony on c-span non-stop, I've been on a big 'responsiblity' kick lately. I would have been happy with 'we made a mistake, we are sorry to disappoint the fans.' Instead we get 'it has come to out attention...' and an flippant invitation to sing kareoke.
Your company is correcting their mistake for future pressings, and that's cool and right, but for us who paid fourteen bucks for your product, that doesn't really help much. And you're right, there's not really anything that you can do, except maybe apologize as a company in your press release for this mistake in quality control. I know a lot of fans bought this to complete their collections and they got a defect, and they are understandably dissapointed. A file on a computer doesn't really add to one's cd collection.

I think 4AD should distribute PRIORITY notice to all venders that the product has been declared defective and that they are therefore authorized to accept returns, to include free shipping. I assume that ALL present stock is being removed from shelves and all sales from present stock have been suspended. Just today I received a copy from Amazon. It remains unopened and I intend to return it, at no cost to myself. That's my suggestion.
Now now, there's no need to be a complete wanker just because of a missing hey
