Dig it psychic - reissue? Still a great amp. Used to have blackface Pro...just didn't have enough 'ooomph' for me at the time. I traded it to a 69 or 70 Ampeg VT22 about 7 years ago and have been playing Ampeg ever since...

I've dug Wave as well, but also in a sort of passive way - stuck in your head. I don't get the rabid desire to hear it like I do many other Pixies tunes. I start many mornings with 'Velouria' for some reason.

i love this song ... when i was in college some local band had recorded a version of this song with female vocals - it was excellent - but then the cover band decided to become a christian band or something and stole the cart (an 8 track looking thing that college radio stations used to play) from the studio and it was to never be heard from again ... but i love this song not necessarly my fave but certainly on my "best of" mix tape -- also no one's mentioned the drumming and i think it's standout work
off on a tangent > the band Love And Rockets also have a fast & slow version of one of their songs and both got radio play back in the day but their song escapes me at the moment

I'm more a fan of the non-surf version, but the surf version in medley wtih into the white is beautiful.
I too also thought that it was "Never found my way to marry Ana" for awhile. |

Love the Doolittle version. Great energy! The B.B.C. version is the surf version, but it's a bit more uptempo and faster than the single version. Great song! Hard to believe that in some parts of the world the "U.K. Surf" version is more popular. Cool info on the lyric, marcusb. Always knew there was a Manson reference, just didn't know what it was. I always thought "wave" refered to how Manson was writing songs for the Beach Boys (wave-beach-get it?) and "mutilation refered to the Manson family murders. I guess it could mean that, too.

A little note "Cease to resist". It is borrowed from the Beach Boys version of a Charles Manson song.. "Never Learn Not To Love".. the original Manson lyric is "Cease to exist"

Great lyrics. Good song. Actually, I didn't like the surf version at first, but it grew on me, and now I like it better than the Doolittle version. |

The UK surf version is one of the best Pixies songs if you ask me, the original is good but the surf version really gets me. Especially Joey's guitar playing as mentioned.

I thought 'cease to exist' as well...
This was the song that re-introduced me to the Pixies and got me into them big time. My friend had made me a tape with a few Pixies tracks on, inc. this, Holiday Song, Debaser, and I think Where Is My Mind. I listened to it and enjoyed it, but promptly forgot about it - the rest of the tape was Idlewild, and I didn't often feel like wading through all that to find some Pixies songs.
However, there came a time when this melody came into my head one night, and I had no idea what it was. It took me literally weeks to work out it was Wave Of Mutilation, and I've never looked back from there!

Also prefer the Doolittle version (never understood why anyone would slow songs down). Not one of their best songs but a nice little tune. The FB Slims version with Eric Drew Feldman was pretty nice.

Actually, Dean, that's a good point. The most redeeming part of "UK Surf" Wave is the Joey surf-lead stuff....very atmospheric and cool sounding. Plus I love vibrato on guitar (which is why I bought a '65 Twin Reverb not too long ago.)
I guess its more the vocals that really don't do it for me...and the slow tempo. I don't know, it was cool on the first few listens but it just seems kind of boring to me now (which is why I prefer the Doolittle version.)

Really? I love the UK surf one with Joey's surftastic leadwork. The standard version doesn't do nearly as much for me.
Making it a medley with In Heaven in musical genius.

One of the best things about this song is the energy it has...the 'surf version' lacks that, though...and is just kind of more boring, I guess.
