Last year somebody asked me if I knew how many copies of each Pixies album had sold.

I didn't but I decided to make some research on the web.

All I could find was information about silver/gold record certifications in the US, UK and France, with associated dates. Not much and not necessarily complete or accurate.

Does somebody out there have access to such numbers?

I may post the information I have on Alec Eiffel, though I am not sure how worthwhile the little I have is.

Is there an interest for such information anyway?

the #'s that are very low (under 100), are likely because those are not sold through places that use Soundscan most of the time.

i wonder who the 2 people who already have the Wave of Mulilation best of are...

I have surfer rosa/come on pilgrim on cd with a messed up track listing do i have 1 of the 53 or 1 of the 1350 and why are the #'s so low?

Why is 'monosyllabic' such a long word?

yep, it is just soundscan sales. that's the only thing taken into account in terms of gold & platinum records. but you are correct, they are now based on units shipped, instead of sold.

but independent stores very often use SoundScan, it's not just the big name stores. they also allow venues to send data to SoundScan for sales sold at concerts too.

btw, i'm pretty sure SoundScan has been around way longer than 1991, that is just when it began being used to construct Billboard Magazine's charts.

those are also just the Soundscan SALES ... it doesnt include indie stores etc ... and doesn't include pre 1991 sales (Soundscan wasnt around then) ... plus today the labels and the RIAA certify GOLD or PLATINUM based on units shipped not sold ... so [b]Surfer Rosa[/b} could be safely certified GOLD also (pre 1991 sales plus the units siting in stores right now)

I wrote a story on the Pixies last week (I'm a journalist) and I got the official sales number for four Pixies albums from Nielsen SounScan, which is the organization that supplies numbers for the American Billboard charts. Here they are:

"Bossanova" - 206,000
"Doolittle" - 560,000
"Surfer Rosa" - 421,000
"Come On Pilgrim"-133,000

Remember that these are the sales figures for the US only. Pixies are even more popular in Europe, so i'm pretty sure you at least can double these numbers to get the worldwide total.

I am the lucky owner of the Trompe Le Monde gold award that you can see on Alec Eiffel. I think I purchased it around 1995. I don't know if it means that it took it so long to get gold.
I also have a gold one for Doolittle.

I think Trompe went gold. Somewhere else on the board someone said that they knew someone who had a platinum award for it, but I don't know if there's any truth behind it. The only concrete proof I have seen was on the Alec Eiffel site, which has a picture of a gold disc award presented to WEA for sales in excess of 500,000 copies in the United States (gold).

She didn't send me the number for Trompe le Monde...not really sure why. I was on deadline and really just needed any numbers I could get for the story, so I didn't press her further. It's not hard to get the info if you call Nielsen.

I'd be really interested to see how this re-union and all the neo-mtv-pixiefans have affected old album sales...I know its very selfish of me but a small part of me wants all this new-found hype to go away so they can be mine again!!

ShakeyShake, the other day I complemented you on your signature, but that was cause there was a broken link to the picture which fit quite well with what you have written. Now, somehow, I've got googly-eyed-Pete staring at me. :) What happened?!
