Posted - 04/13/2004 : 01:10:53 hi, dont know if anybody has shared the same thoughts: i have been drinking on weekend with my girlfriend in a russian cafe. after maybe the 10 th wodka she said something very powerful: "you wanna know now the real reason why the pixies will never been that succesfull like nirvana or anybody else? its because frank black got no sex-appeal!! thats it!! a fucked up kurt cobein with his annoying suicide-attitude got somthing sexy, like morrison or hendrix and every single THE band this days plays with this drug-the-end-is-near-style...and have a charming leadsinger...."
sorry for my english i am still drunken and cant stop thinking what would the pixies like if frank looks like casablancas and kim deal like hole... and... if it would be a better world... |

Posted - 04/19/2004 : 06:07:55 Sex appeal ruins bands I think. People go to see the band and not hear them.
I agree with daisy as well, its about how the product is marketed. |

Definitely not, my friend. The only reason I said alleged suicide attempts is because I'm a subscriber to Tom Grant's theories. I was borderline obsessed with Kurt and Nirvana when I was a teenager, and I still have all respect for him. I was just trying to say that Frank didn't have as visible as problems as Kurt Cobain. And I know that he didn't chose those problems nor exploit them for personal gain. He was an introvert.
I knew you weren't suggesting it. I got the impression that others were.

Really, it's the marketing...it's all about marketing It's not about the product because the product ROCKS!!!!

the pixies totaly laid the ground work for so many bands. their like the velvet underground becuase, they might not have selled alot of records. but the impact they had on so many other bands is immeasurable.

Posted - 04/16/2004 : 14:13:20 They were all too normal looking for one thing. Also, I think they may have broken up right before fame would have hit. I mean, they had some mega exposure on the U2 tour, but broke up right afterwords. And then Pixie clone bands had some success. It seems like often the seminal bands have fame elude them, but the copy-cat bands are the ones that hit it big. |

Posted - 04/14/2004 : 04:20:19 I think Frank is very attractive. I think the real reason is because they kept playing what they wanted to play and it was ahead of their time. Frank didn't write "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and he didn't have a media-magnet lifestyle like heroin addiction, stomach problems, and alleged suicide attempts. I agree that I like it better this way, because it makes them seem more personal to me. I guess that's selfish, but I would've like to see them make it REAL big, too. I'm tired. |

Posted - 04/13/2004 : 11:11:42 Hi,
I think there were several reasons why the Pixies did not get big in the US: 1) No heavy metal -related sound. They were post-punk while mainstream America was still not into punk. 2) No "cool" video (compare to Smells Like Teen Spirit) 3) No sexy face for the band leader 4) No other message than "listen to this". 5) UK label

Posted - 04/13/2004 : 10:28:08 hey lookin back i'm glad the pixies were never the biggest band in the world, theyre way too special and uber good for that title. and it makes them even more that sacred to me.
and franks sex appeal only relates i think to the grrls and to the gay audience. i'm neither so it never entered the equation. and to be frank (i wish) i can say my music collection isnt built on how sexy or appealing the members of the bands are to me.
its about the music. |

Posted - 04/13/2004 : 05:20:44 i've heard that argument before, it holds some weight... although the pixies didn't do much promo, partly because they were on 4ad, partly because they didn't want to (i believe)... they just weren't a commericial band... and kudos to them!

Posted - 04/13/2004 : 02:05:41 kim had sex appeal, so I don't know. I often think it's because frank was a bit large, but I still think frank looks cute sometimes. The pixies certainly had an image, not a styled one, but they had. I think they were too cool to be big
