Posted - 04/11/2004 : 17:39:12 Hello, I was wondering whether anyone else has heard Tv on the Radio's unique interpretation of Mr Grieves ; its actually a hidden track and they do it in a doo -wop/barbershop quintet style. I think its a good version ( for once) but I am intrested to see what all you other pixies think!...it can be found on good old Kazaa. |

For the record, the new TVOTR album is wonderful, and contains no Pixies songs.
Hail to the king, baby!
Sounds awful.
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place
But ended up being fantastic.

Posted - 09/15/2006 : 09:19:24 Man, did they ever rip shit up and David Letterman. Check YouTube for the highlights. That was fucking killer performance, and I think it kind of puts the album version to shame.

Their first release, the gorgeous Young Liars EP, came on the Mayflower of New York rock groups - along with the likes of The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Liars. Although they didn't quite belong in that boat (droning bass and acapella Pixies covers aren't quite The Strokes' forte), TV On the Radio struggled like many other groups to separate themselves from the mainstream success and sound of The Strokes. So when their first full-length album Desperate Youth, Bloody Thirsty Babes came out, they made sure to prove they were different.
And they did. But it was for the worse: The album was rushed and contrived. It seemed as if TV On the Radio had a rubric for their first record and were going to stick to it no matter what. And it began to look like they were worth four great tracks and a barbershop cover of the Pixies' "Mr. Grieves." |

I just heard this the other day. One of my students (a youngster--college freshman) mentioned that she had heard that the Pixies was a cool band, and (get this...how's this for feeling old?) she thought it would be "cool" and "retro" to hear them. So I lent her a mixed CD of Pixies. She came to class a week or so later with "Mr. Grieves" acapella style. Turns out she had no idea that "Mr. Grieves" as a Pixies song. She only knew the TV on the Radio version...

I am sure you're right hec. Listening to Nirvana is often a kids first step into discovering the world of music that is outside of what's in the charts at that particular time... it's gotta be a good thing. |

Posted - 04/12/2004 : 03:01:50 antrobin, that doesn't surprise me - there's still some people in their early 20's who only know of the band via 'Tame' or 'Where Is My Mind' scarily :) |
