Today's random song of the day is Lovely Day.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
At the station, at the border an egression to the exterior law and order
Upward plantation
I remember your red dress
Like a field full o' poppy
You were making me dreamy
Stunned by a love, got to do what your head says
Could not let it stop me
They got one leaving today
And it's going away
Got my feet in the stirrup
It can be kind of banal
But I dream of your red dress
Riding down these dry canals
Oh baby it's not Europe
But I'm sending you money
I'm sending you lots of money
So you can buy a ticket
You will be my martian honey all the day
They got one leaving today
And it's going away.

Black Francis

I never really thought much about this song at first, but it later grew on me. I think realizing what it was about helped. It's pretty typical in subject matter for Frank in his late Pixies/early solo period. And I agree with two reelers that it sounds rather remote.

Love all the guitar parts after the vocals have stopped. Great song, better ending.

Yeah, as soon as I read your post it seemed reasonable for Frank to twist the words around like that, since he's been known to do that quite a bit. I just thought I'd offer a counterpoint, just to make sure. And as far as I know, I've always seen the moon spelled EuropA (I was a bit of a space buff when I was a little kid and would do silly things like memorize all the moons in the solar system, etc.) But yeah. I see exactly where you're coming from.

This song is so well-written. They got one leaving today, and it's going awy - the little guitar riff....very nice.

hi prozacrat,

okay, i didn't get the differenece between europE and europA. thought this moon would also spell europE in english. anyways, knowing how frank likes to play with words, i still can follow the idea that before anybody else he knew about this icy moon...

cheers

It is definitely one of my favorite Pixies tunes, I mentioned it in the "most underrated Pixies song" thread. I love Joey's guitar work on this number, it drives the whole song. Great tempo, great energy, and it is actually a nice change of pace/style from the tracks that precede it on Trompe. I've been wanting my band to cover a song from Trompe, and I'ved narrowed it down to either this or Alec Eiffel or Letter to Memphis. I think it would really get a crowd on it's feet.

I'm not so keen on this song. It is a good song but halfway through I start getting excited because Motorway To Roswell is next.

Two Reelers, do you mean Europa? I actually think he's refering to the real Europe (from which you hail), and is comparing a vacation to Europe with a vacation to Mars. But enough about the lyrics. This song trucks along like nobody's business. It's right up there with my all time favorite cruising songs. If you're going to take off and hit the road, my three favorite songs with which to start it off would be Idiot Kings by Soul Coughing, Borderline by Camper Van Beethoven, and Lovely Day. It moves. When the Pixies hit that tempo and groove it would be wise to just get out of the way. Damn, I love that song.

Absolutely love it.Love the tempo the lyrics and the general all round groove of it. Sung with bags of passion. Classic Black Francis. Hope to hear it real soon.

great song - to me it sounds somehow very remote, dunno how to describe. it sounds almost unreal. especially i like the part

Stunned by a love, got to do what your head says
Could not let it stop me

it is so fast spoken, i like that (similiar in the second verse)

riding down these dry canals: o.k., this refers to mars, but then there is the part

oh' baby it's not europe

obviously here jupiter's moon is meant - but i think it was only recently that scientists said that on europe there are the highest chances for finding water. i don't think that this idea was brought up already in 1991. again a proof that frank is light years ahead...

Definately one of the best off Trompe Le Monde. Kind of an "anynomous" track really; it's seldom mentioned. but I love it. it's not so pixies-esque. but I love the... speed in it.
